On the origins of the concept of 'latent schizophrenia' in Russian psychiatry

In the mid-twentieth century in the Soviet Union, latent schizophrenia became an important concept and a matter of research and also of punitive psychiatry. This article investigates precursor concepts in early Russian psychiatry of the nineteenth century, and examines whether - as claimed in recent literature - Russian and Soviet research on latent schizophrenia was mainly influenced by the work of Eugen Bleuler.

Eugen Bleuler's Views on the Genetics of Schizophrenia in 1917

In 1917, Eugen Bleuler published an article (Mendelismus bei Psychosen, speziell bei der Schizophrenie [Mendelism in the Psychoses, especially Schizophrenia]) in response to the recently published first systematic family study of dementia praecox (DP) by Ernst Rüdin, then working under Kraepelin in Munich. Although briefly commented upon by David Rosenthal in 1978, this article has never been thoroughly reviewed or translated. Of the many themes addressed, four are especially noteworthy. First, Bleuler argues that understanding the transmission patterns of schizophrenia in families requires definitive knowledge about the boundaries of the phenotype which he argues are unknown. Rüdin's choice-Kraepelin's concept of DP-is, he asserts, too narrow. Clarifying the genetics of schizophrenia is inextricably bound up with the problem of defining the phenotype. Second, Bleuler argues for the importance of "erbschizose" (literally "inherited schizoidia") wondering whether his "4 As" or other "brain-anatomical, chemical, [or] neurological characteristics" might underlie the genetic transmission of schizophrenia. Third, Bleuler was deeply interested in the nature of the onset of schizophrenia, suggesting that environmental adversity could provoke "latent illness to become manifest." It was important, he argued, to identify such risk factors and incorporate them into genetic models. Fourth, although not optimistic that current knowledge would permit a resolution of the transmission model for schizophrenia, he finds single-locus models implausible and at several points wonders whether polygenic models might better apply. Autistic-Undisciplined Thinking in the Practice of Medical Trichology

Medical trichology is the branch of dermatology that deals with the scientific study of the hair and scalp in health and disease. As any discipline, the practice of medical trichology is not immune to malpractice, either deliberately or carelessly. In his publication "Autistic Undisciplined Thinking in Medicine and How to Overcome It," Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler describes yet another form of malpractice in medicine reflecting autistic-undisciplined thinking. Autism is not limited to psychopathology, but inherent to the thinking of man throughout history in his drive for knowledge, with thousands of theories lacking any basis in reality. Bleuler recognized the drive character of autistic thinking and how it leads to conclusions that are unshakable because they are determined by, and fulfill, emotional needs, rather than rational argumentation. Even with correct questions, the complexity and incalculability of some problems are often so great that it cannot do justice to realistic thinking and the boundaries between inadequately substantiated hypothesis and autistic sham explanation disappear. Statistics, careful research design, and the attempt to impose stringent methods on our thinking are to be commended. The habituation of the public to useless medicine, to misconceptions, is not hygiene, but negligent endangerment. It has created an industry that largely lives on the autistic thinking of patients and doctors and because it is prosperous, makes propaganda among lay people as well as among doctors that necessarily leads to abuses. This article aims at exposing the most prevalent among abuses in trichological practice due to autistic-undisciplined thinking, specifically: iron supplementation, antiandrogenic treatment, and individualized cell-based therapy in female androgenetic alopecia, treatment of folliculitis decalvans with retinoids, and the value of nutritional therapies.

'S.W.' and C.G. Jung: mediumship, psychiatry and serial exemplarity

On the basis of unpublished materials, this essay reconstructs Jung's seances with his cousin, Helene Preiswerk, which formed the basis of his 1902 medical dissertation, The Psychology and Pathology of so-called Occult Phenomena. It separates out Jung's contemporaneous approach to the mediumistic phenomena she exhibited from his subsequent sceptical psychological reworking of the case. It traces the reception of the work and its significance for his own self-experimentation from 1913 onwards. Finally, it reconstructs the manner in which Jung continually returned to his first model and reframed it as an exemplar of his developing theories.
