The importance of structural and functional characteristics of tidal channels to smooth cordgrass invasion in the Yellow River Delta, China: Implications for coastal wetland management

Understanding the spatiotemporal landscape dynamics and spread pathways of invasive plants, as well as their interactions with geomorphic landscape features, are of great importance for predicting and managing their future range-expansion in non-native habitats. Although previous studies have linked geomorphic landscape features such as tidal channels to plant invasions, the potential mechanisms and critical characteristics of tidal channels that affect the landward invasion by Spartina alterniflora, an aggressive plant in global coastal wetlands, remain unclear. Here, using high-resolution remote-sensing images of the Yellow River Delta from 2013 to 2020, we first quantified the evolution of tidal channel networks by analyzing the spatiotemporal dynamics of their structural and functional characteristics. The invasion patterns and pathways of S. alterniflora were then identified. Based on the above-mentioned quantification and identification, we finally quantified the influences of tidal channel characteristics on S. alterniflora invasion. The results showed that tidal channel networks presented increasing growth and development over time, and their spatial structure evolved from simple to complex. The external isolated expansion of S. alterniflora played a dominant role during the initial invasion stage, and then they connected the discrete patches into the meadow through marginal expansion. Afterwards, tidal channel-driven expansion gradually increased and became the primary way during the late invasion stage, accounting for about 47.3%. Notably, tidal channel networks with higher drainage efficiency (shorter OPL, higher D and E) attained larger invasion areas. The longer the tidal channels and the more sinuous the channel structure, the greater the invasion potential by S. alterniflora. These findings highlight the importance of structural and functional properties of tidal channel networks in driving plant invasion landward, which should be incorporated into future control and management of invasive plants in coastal wetlands.

Chronic N enrichment and drought alter plant cover and community composition in a Mediterranean-type semi-arid shrubland

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition has caused a decline in native plant species and an increase in exotic plant species in many terrestrial ecosystems; however, vegetation change depends on the rate and/or duration of N input, individual species responses, interactions with other resources, and ecosystem properties such as species richness and canopy cover, soil texture, pH, and/or disturbance regime. Native shrub and exotic forb responses to N enrichment were evaluated over a 13-year field experiment in a mature coastal sage scrub (CSS) shrubland of southern California to test the hypothesis that dry-season N input will cause a decline in native shrubs and an increase in exotic annuals. Nitrogen enrichment caused the dominant native shrubs, Artemisia californica and Salvia mellifera, to respond differently, with A. californica initially increasing with N input but declining thereafter and S. mellifera declining consistently over the 13-year-period. Both species exhibited higher canopy dieback during drought conditions, especially in N plots. Brassica nigra, an exotic annual, invaded N plots significantly more than control plots, but only after 10 years of N addition and a prolonged drought, which increased native shrub canopy dieback. These results indicate a possible synergism between N enrichment and drought on native shrub and exotic forb abundance, which would have important implications for plant diversity in semi-arid shrublands of southwest US that are anticipated to experience an increase in anthropogenic N enrichment and the frequency and duration of drought.

A century of ecosystem change: human and seabird impacts on plant species extirpation and invasion on islands

We used 116 years of floral and faunal records from Mandarte Island, British Columbia, Canada, to estimate the indirect effects of humans on plant communities via their effects on the population size of a surface-nesting, colonial seabird, the Glaucous-winged gull (Larus glaucescens). Comparing current to historical records revealed 18 extirpations of native plant species (32% of species historically present), 31 exotic species introductions, and one case of exotic introduction followed by extirpation. Contemporary surveys indicated that native species cover declined dramatically from 1986 to 2006, coincident with the extirpation of 'old-growth' conifers. Because vegetation change co-occurred with an increasing gull population locally and regionally, we tested several predictions from the hypothesis that the presence and activities of seabirds help to explain those changes. Specifically, we predicted that on Mandarte and nearby islands with gull colonies, we should observe higher nutrient loading and exotic plant species richness and cover than on nearby islands without gull colonies, as a consequence of competitive dominance in species adapted to high soil nitrogen and trampling. As predicted, we found that native plant species cover and richness were lower, and exotic species cover and richness higher, on islands with versus without gull colonies. In addition, we found that soil carbon and nitrogen on islands with nesting gulls were positively related to soil depth and exotic species richness and cover across plots and islands. Our results support earlier suggestions that nesting seabirds can drive rapid change in insular plant communities by increasing nutrients and disturbing vegetation, and that human activities that affect seabird abundance may therefore indirectly affect plant community composition on islands with seabird colonies.
