Converting inert AlOOH into efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction via structural/electronic modulation

Efficient and stable water-splitting electrocatalysts play a key role to obtain green and clean hydrogen energy. However, only a few kinds of materials display an intrinsically good performance towards water splitting. It is significant but challengeable to effectively improve the catalytic activity of inert or less active catalysts for water splitting. Herein, we present a structural/electronic modulation strategy to convert inert AlOOH nanorods into catalytic nanosheets for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) via ball milling, plasma etching and Co doping. Compared to inert AlOOH, the modulated AlOOH delivers much better OER performance with a low overpotential of 400 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and a very low Tafel slope of 52 mV dec^-1, even lower than commercial OER catalyst RuO₂. Significant performance enhancement is attributed to the electronic and structural modulation. The electronic structure is effectively improved by Co doping, ball milling-induced shear strain, plasma etching-caused rich vacancies; abrupt morphology/microstructure change from nanorod to nanoparticle to nanosheet, as well as rich defects caused by ball milling and plasma etching, can significantly increase active sites; the free energy change of the potential determining step of modulated AlOOH decreases from 2.93 eV to 1.70 eV, suggesting a smaller overpotential is needed to drive the OER processes. This strategy can be extended to improve the electrocatalytic performance for other materials with inert or less catalytic activity.

2D-layered Mg(OH)2 material adsorbing cellobiose via interfacial chemical coupling and its applications in handling toxic Cd2+ and UO22+ ions

The interfacial chemistry of nanocomposite materials is of overarching importance in the separation and purification science; moreover, its understanding helps to guide synthesis, clarify structure-property relationship and unearth novel applications. However, the composites feature rather complicated local structures and hydrogen bonds are often involved in the interface and the vicinity of active sites. In this regard, density functional theory first-principle calculations associated with experimental study have synergistically examined two-dimensional (2D) magnesium hydroxide material with different layers and their adsorption toward cellobiose. Hydrogen bonds are found responsible for the interfacial coupling, which make it vital to cover the dispersion correction in the calculation. The average adsorption energy ranges from -0.29 to -0.35 eV, falling well within the range of reported hydrogen-bonding strength. On the basis of calculated structural/interfacial properties and experimental findings, the 2D Mg(OH)₂ in terms of three-layer model was unraveled to substitute toxic Cd²⁺ ion and sorb radioactive UO₂²⁺ that is coordinated by water and hydroxyl groups. These reactions are thermodynamically feasible. The ion-exchanging mechanism was proposed for cadmium removal and the outer-sphere adsorption one for uranium extraction.

Highly-efficient overall water splitting in 2D Janus group-III chalcogenide multilayers: the roles of intrinsic electric filed and vacancy defects

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials have been widely adopted as photocatalysts for water splitting, but the energy conversion efficiency remains low. On the basis of first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the 2D Janus group-III chalcogenide multilayers: InGaXY, M₂XY and InGaX₂ (M = In/Ga; X, Y = S/Se/Te), are promising photocatalysts for highly-efficient overall water splitting. The intrinsic electric field enhances the spatial separations of photogenerated carriers and alters the band alignment, which is more pronounced compared with the Janus monolayers. High solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency with the upper limit of 38.5% was predicted in the Janus multilayers. More excitingly, the Ga vacancy of InGaSSe bilayer effectively lowers the overpotentials of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to the levels provided solely by the photogenerated carriers. Our theoretical results suggest that the 2D Janus group-III chalcogenide multilayers could be utilized as highly efficient photocatalysts for overall water splitting without the needs of sacrificial reagents.
