Monitoring long-term vegetation condition dynamics in persistent semi-arid wetland communities using time series of Landsat data

Wetlands in arid and semi-arid regions are characterized by dry- and wet-phase vegetation expression which responds to variable water resources. Monitoring condition trends in these wetlands is challenging because transitions may be rapid and short-lived, and identification of meaningful condition change requires longitudinal study. Remotely-sensed data provide cost effective, multi-decadal information with sufficient temporal and spatial scale to explore wetland condition. In this study, we used a time series of Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) derived from 34 years (1988-2021) of Landsat imagery, to investigate the long-term condition dynamics of six broad vegetation groups (communities) in a large floodplain wetland system, the Macquarie Marshes in Australia. These communities were persistently mapped as River Red Gum wetland, Black Box/Coolibah woodland, Lignum shrubland, Semi-permanent wetland, Terrestrial grassland and Terrestrial woodland. We used generalized additive models (GAM) to explore the response of vegetation to seasonality, river flow and climatic conditions. We found that EVI was a useful metric to monitor both wetland condition and response to climatic and hydrological drivers. Wetland communities were particularly responsive to river flow and seasonality, while terrestrial communities were responsive to climate and seasonality. Our results indicate asymptotic condition responses, and therefore evidence of hydrological thresholds, by some wetland communities to river flows. We did not observe a long-term trend of declining condition although an apparent increase in condition variability towards the end of the time series requires continued monitoring. Our remotely-sensed, landscape-scale monitoring approach merits further ground validation. We discuss how it can be used to provide a management tool which continuously assesses short and long-term wetland condition and informs conservation decisions about water management for environmental flows.

Assessing the long-term impact of cascade hydropower development on the inundation patterns of floodplain wetlands

The inundation process of floodplain wetlands plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of river ecosystems, which are highly sensitive to hydrological alteration. Nevertheless, the specific mechanisms through which these hydrological changes affect the inundation patterns of floodplain wetlands are still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact mechanism of cascade hydropower development on the inundation process of floodplain wetlands. Multitemporal remote sensing datasets and long-term hydrometeorological data series were utilized in this study. By employing the water appearance frequency (WAF) index, wetland hydrological stability assessment, and wavelet analysis, the inundation changes in floodplain wetlands and the underlying hydrological driving mechanisms were examined. The results revealed significant alterations in the inundation frequency of floodplain wetlands due to the construction of upstream dams. Specifically, the construction of the Danjiangkou and Wangfuzhou dams led to an increase in the total inundated area of Part A (16.09 km2) and Part B (76.93 km2), respectively. Conversely, the moderate frequency inundation zone in Part C decreased (26.7 km2) after the construction of the Cuijiaying Dam. The typical floodplain wetland 7 shifted from high to low (8.94 km2) stability after the construction of the Cuijiaying Dam. Furthermore, the cascade hydropower dam construction resulted in increased fluctuations in downstream water discharge. This study provides an effective approach to understanding the impact of cascade hydropower dams on the inundation process of floodplain wetlands.

Pervasive Pesticide Contamination of Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Area

Knowledge of the types and impacts of contaminants occurring in the freshwater wetlands of the Great Barrier Reef catchment area (GBRCA) is limited. The present study examined the presence and concentrations of pesticides occurring in 22 floodplain wetlands, situated in moderate to high-intensity land uses in the GBRCA. The dominant land use within 1 km of the wetlands was sugar cane for 12 wetlands, grazing for 6 wetlands, plantation forestry and conservation for 2 wetlands, and one with an equal mix of land uses. Fifty-nine pesticides and pesticide degradates were detected in the wetlands during 2 consecutive early wet seasons. These included 27 herbicides, 11 herbicide degradates, 11 insecticides, 8 fungicides, 1 nematicide, and 1 pesticide synergist. Each wetland sampled contained between 12 and 30 pesticides with an average of 21 pesticides detected per wetland sampling. Temporal differences existed in the number, types, and average concentrations of pesticides detected. No exceedances of Australian and New Zealand water guideline values were found during the first sampling season, while 10 wetlands had concentrations of at least 1 pesticide exceeding the guidelines during the following sampling season. For 1 wetland, concentrations of 4 pesticides were greater than the prescribed guideline values. Individually, the vast majority of aquatic species would be protected, but in some wetlands, diuron would affect 49% of species and atrazine up to 24% of species. Statistically significant correlations between the number of pesticides and the percentage of intensive land use, primarily sugar cane growing in a 1 km radius of the wetlands, were found. Application of Landsat derived indices and hydrological alteration matrices to quantify the response of floodplain wetlands to river hydrology in arid regions based on different dam operation strategies

The response of floodplain wetlands to changes in river hydrology caused by different dam operation strategies in arid regions has attracted worldwide attention in recent decades. However, less is known about quantifying the effects of dam operations on wetlands in different lateral zones located in low-gradient floodplains in arid regions using remote sensing and hydrological time series. In this study, hydrological time series from 1975 to 1985 and 2008-2014 were used to quantify 67 flow metrics during different dam operation periods. Time series of remote sensing data (39 periods in total) from 1975 to 1977 and 2008-2014 were analysed to quantify the spatiotemporal dynamics in floodplain wetland types (river, bare wet land and wetland vegetation areas). In addition, a correlation analysis was performed to quantify the relationship between each wetland type and the flow metrics in different lateral zones. The results indicate that approximately 90% of the water and bare wet land area were located in the continuously and frequently inundated zones. Vegetation was the main wetland type in the regularly and extremely rarely inundated zones, and a 45.7% decrease in the vegetation area of these two belts occurred; in contrast, a 20.14 km² of increase in vegetation occurred in the frequently inundated zone after the uniform scheduling was implemented for the entire river. Linear correlation and regression analysis showed that the different dam operation strategies resulted in various wetland changes in the different lateral zones. The decrease in high flows and increase in low flows caused a decrease in the vegetation cover area in the regularly and extremely rarely inundated zones and led to vegetation encroachment in the frequently inundated zone. Our study can improve the management of wetlands and water resources in arid region floodplains.

Multi-scale analysis of functional plankton diversity in floodplain wetlands: Effects of river regulation

Riverine floodplains are among the most diverse and dynamic ecosystems, but river regulation measures have altered the natural hydrological regime threatening their ecological integrity. We compared spatial patterns of phyto- and zooplankton functional diversity and of environmental heterogeneity between floodplain wetlands located in free-flowing and impounded stretches of the Danube River (Austria). We included two nested spatial scales (different habitats and water sections within wetland areas) and two contrasting hydrological conditions (post-flood, no flood). Environmental heterogeneity was lower in the wetland in the impounded stretch than in the free-flowing ones. At post-flood conditions, increased alpha diversity of rotifers and microcrustaceans and decreased beta diversity of phytoplankton and rotifers occurred in the impounded stretch as compared to the wetlands in free-flowing one. Beta diversity was higher between water sections than between habitats in free-flowing wetlands and similar across scales in the wetland in the impounded stretch. Regarding functional composition, the wetland in the impounded stretch hosted more homogeneous communities, as some ecological traits were nearly absent. Our results indicate that patterns of functional diversity in floodplain wetlands affected by river regulation are altered, highlighting the major role of the gradient of lateral connectivity and dynamic water level fluctuations as drivers for planktic diversity in river floodplains. This study contributes with essential knowledge to optimize restoration and diversity conservation measures in riverine ecosystems.

Changes in water quality of treated sewage effluents by their receiving environments in Tablas de Daimiel National Park, Spain

The Tablas de Daimiel National Park (TDNP), a floodplain wetland located in the Upper Guadiana Basin (central Spain), receives pollution from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharging their treated sewage effluents (TSEs) to tributary channels to the wetland. The TSEs suffer transformations on their way to the TDNP, but the water quality is controlled only at the point of discharge. In this work, we analyse the change in water quality of the TSE from four urban WWTPs in the surroundings of the TDNP (Alcázar de San Juan, Daimiel, Manzanares and Villarrubia de los Ojos towns). The water samples were taken at the outlet of the plants and in the receiving environments, to analyse the water quality transformation of the TSE. The different discharge configurations of each WWTP have been related with the water quality transformation of their TSE, to interpret the influence of the hydro-geomorphology in the improvement or deterioration of the water quality of TSE. We found that the discharge of TSE into slow flow channels with macrophyte vegetation facilitates water self-purification but, with time, the accumulation of sludge in the beds of the effluents tends to be the cause of the deterioration of the water quality.
