Investigation into the hot workability of the as-extruded WE43 magnesium alloy using processing map

The research concerned the characterization of the hot-working behavior of the as-extruded WE43 magnesium alloy potentially for biomedical applications and the construction of processing maps to guide the choice of forming process parameters. Isothermal uniaxial compression tests were performed over a temperature range of 350-480°C and strain rate range of 0.001-10s(-1). Flow stresses obtained were used to construct processing maps. Domains in processing maps corresponding to relevant deformation mechanisms, i.e., dynamic recrystallization (DRX), dynamic recovery (DRV) and flow instability, were identified, according to power dissipation efficiency and flow instability parameter values. Microstructures of compression-tested specimens were examined to validate these deformation mechanisms. Two mechanisms of DRX nucleation, i.e., particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) and grain boundary bulging, were found to be operative at the low-temperature and high-temperature DRX domains, respectively. Flow instability was related to adiabatic shear bands and abnormal grain growth. An optimum condition for the hot working of this alloy was determined to be at a temperature of 475°C and a strain rate of 0.1s(-1).

Flow instability detected in ruptured versus unruptured cerebral aneurysms at the internal carotid artery

Flow instability has emerged as a new hemodynamic metric hypothesized to have potential value in assessing the rupture risk of cerebral aneurysms. However, diverse findings have been reported in the literature. In the present study, high-resolution hemodynamic simulations were performed retrospectively on 35 aneurysms (10 ruptured & 25 unruptured) located at the internal carotid artery (ICA). Simulated hemodynamic parameters were statistically compared between the ruptured and unruptured aneurysms, with emphasis on examining the correlation of flow instability with the status of aneurysm rupture. Pronounced flow instability was detected in 20% (2 out of 10) of the ruptured aneurysms, whereas in 44% (11 out of 25) of the unruptured aneurysms. Statistically, the flow instability metric (quantified by the temporally and spatially averaged fluctuating kinetic energy over the aneurysm sac) did not differ significantly between the ruptured and unruptured aneurysms. In contrast, low wall shear stress area (LSA) and pressure loss coefficient (PLC) exhibited significant correlations with the status of aneurysm rupture. In conclusion, the present study suggests that the presence of flow instability may not correlate closely with the status of aneurysm rupture, at least for ICA aneurysms. On the other hand, the retrospective nature of the study and the small sample size may have to some extent compromised the reliability of the conclusion, and therefore large-scale prospective studies would be needed to further address the issue.

Onset and nature of flow-induced vibrations in cerebral aneurysms via fluid-structure interaction simulations

Clinical, experimental, and recent computational studies have demonstrated the presence of wall vibrations in cerebral aneurysms, thought to be induced by blood flow instability. These vibrations could induce irregular, high-rate deformation of the aneurysm wall, and potentially disrupt regular cell behavior and promote deleterious wall remodeling. In order to elucidate, for the first time, the onset and nature of such flow-induced vibrations, in this study we imposed a linearly increasing flow rate on high-fidelity fluid-structure interaction models of three anatomically realistic aneurysm geometries. Prominent narrow-band vibrations in the range of 100-500 Hz were found in two out of the three aneurysm geometries tested, while the case that did not exhibit flow instability did not vibrate. Aneurysm vibrations consisted mostly of fundamental modes of the entire aneurysm sac, with the vibrations exhibiting more frequency content at higher frequencies than the flow instabilities driving those vibrations. The largest vibrations occurred in the case which exhibited strongly banded fluid frequency content, and the vibration amplitude was highest when the strongest fluid frequency band was an integer multiple of one of the natural frequencies of the aneurysm sac. Lower levels of vibration occurred in the case which exhibited turbulent-like flow with no distinct frequency bands. The current study provides a plausible mechanistic explanation for the high-frequency sounds observed in cerebral aneurysms, and suggests that narrow-band (vortex-shedding type) flow might stimulate the wall more, or at least at lower flow rates, than broad-band, turbulent-like flow.

Influence of cellulose nanofiber fluid on flow instability and heat transfer of two-phase closed thermosyphon

In this research, the geyser phenomenon occurring in a small-diameter two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) was observed and the instability of the device was discussed. Geyser phenomena interfere with the natural circulation of internal working fluids, increasing the thermal resistance of the system and contributing to the instability of the device. This study attempts to improve the thermal performance and stability of the system using cellulose nanofiber (CNF) fluid as the working fluid. The use of CNF fluid was observed to reduce the magnitude of temperature change inside the evaporator of the TPCT significantly. Moreover, it improved the local boiling heat transfer coefficient by 3.1 %, 87.3 %, and 181.2 % on average when the filling ratios are 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75, respectively. Studying the local heat transfer performance and instability will be helpful in designing a more stable TPCT efficiently. Additionally, the findings of this study can be applied to solar thermal power generation or heat pipe research for cooling strategies in computing servers, depending on the input heat load.

Harnessing an elastic flow instability to improve the kinetic performance of chromatographic columns

Despite decades of research and development, the optimal efficiency of slurry-packed HPLC columns is still hindered by inherent long-range flow heterogeneity from the wall to the central bulk region of these columns. Here, we show an example of how this issue can be addressed through the straightforward addition of a semidilute amount (500 ppm) of a large, flexible, synthetic polymer (18 MDa partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, HPAM) to the mobile phase (1% NaCl aqueous solution, hereafter referred to as "brine") during operation of a 4.6 mm × 300 mm column packed with 10μm BEHTM 125 Å particles. Addition of the polymer imparts elasticity to the mobile phase, causing the flow in the interparticle pore space to become unstable above a threshold flow rate. We verify the development of this elastic flow instability using pressure drop measurements of the friction factor versus Reynolds number. In prior work, we showed that this flow instability is characterized by large spatiotemporal fluctuations in the pore-scale flow velocities that may promote analyte dispersion across the column. Axial dispersion measurements of the quasi non-retained tracer thiourea confirm this possibility: they reveal that operating above the onset of the instability improves column efficiency by greater than 100%. These experiments thereby suggest that elastic flow instabilities can be harnessed to mitigate the negative impact of trans-column flow heterogeneities on the efficiency of slurry-packed HPLC columns. While this approach has its own inherent limitations and constraints, our results lay the groundwork for future targeted development of polymers that can impart elasticity when dissolved in commonly used liquid chromatography mobile phases, and can thereby generate elastic flow instabilities to help improve the resolution of HPLC columns.

On the use of steady flow rates for approximating flow instabilities and vibrations in intracranial aneurysms

Recent computational and experimental studies of intracranial aneurysms have revealed potential mechanisms of aneurysm bruits and murmurs, driven by flow instabilities rather than by stable pulsatile flow. Some of these studies have been conducted under the assumption of constant flow rate (steady flow); however the validity of this assumption has not been evaluated for high-frequency flow instability, or vibrations from fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations. We evaluated the time-averaged wall shear stress, flow instability and vibration amplitude of steady flow simulations, performed at both cycle-averaged and peak-systolic flow rates, and compared these to recent pulsatile FSI simulations. Wall shear stress fields of pulsatile flow (time-averaged and peak values) were well-approximated by the respective steady-flow FSI simulations, and the spatial distribution and frequency content of flow instability and vibrations were reasonably approximated by the steady flow simulations at peak-systolic flow rates. However, the level of flow instability and vibration was generally over-predicted by the steady flow simulations at peak-systolic flow rates as flow remained unstable for longer than in the pulsatile simulation, while no flow instability was detected for steady flow at cycle-averaged flow rates. Additionally, the amplitude of flow instability and vibration fluctuated considerably in the steady flow simulations, while the pulsatile simulations exhibited consistent vibration amplitudes (less than 10 % variation at peak systole between cycles). Finally, steady flow simulations at peak-systolic conditions required 2-3x more compute time than the pulsatile simulations for the same time duration. Therefore, we recommend using pulsatile flow simulations when investigating vibrations and flow instabilities.
