Organic amendment application affects the release behaviour, bioavailability, and speciation of heavy metals in zinc smelting slag: Insight into dissolved organic matter

Organic amendments are commonly used in assisted phytostabilization of mine wastes by improving their physicochemical and biological properties. These amendments are susceptible to leaching and degradation, resulting in the generation of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which significantly influences the geochemical behaviour of heavy metals (HMs). However, the geochemical behaviour of HMs in metal smelting slag driven by organic amendment-derived DOM remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the impact of cow manure-derived DOM on the release behaviour, bioavailability, and speciation of HMs (Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd) in zinc smelting slag using a multidisciplinary approach. The results showed that DOM enhanced the weathering of the slag, with a minimal impact on the slag's mineral phases, except for causing gypsum dissolution. The DOM addition resulted in a slight increase in HM release from the slag during the initial inoculation period, followed by a reduction in HM release during the later period. Furthermore, the DOM addition increased the diversity and relative abundance of the bacterial community. This, in turn, led to a decrease in the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content and enhanced the transformation of labile DOM compounds into recalcitrant compounds. The variation in HM release during various inoculation periods can be attributed to the bacterial decomposition and transformation of DOM, which further enhanced the transformation of HM fractions. Specifically, during the later period, DOM promoted the conversion of a portion of the reducible and oxidizable fractions of Cu, Pb, and Zn into the acid-soluble and residual fractions. Moreover, it partially transformed the reducible, oxidizable, and residual fractions of Cd into the acid-soluble fraction. Overall, this study provides new insights into the geochemical behaviour of HMs in slag governed by the coupling effect of DOM and the bacterial community. These findings have implications for the use of organic amendments in assisted phytostabilization of metal smelting slag. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Metal smelting slag is hazardous due to its high levels of HMs, and its improper disposal has serious consequences for the ecosystem. Organic amendments are employed in assisted phytostabilization of the slag site by improving its microecological properties. However, the impact of organic amendment-derived DOM on HM migration and transformation in slag remains unclear. This study indicated that the coupling effects of DOM and microbes governed the geochemical behaviour of HMs in slag. These findings provide new insights into how organic amendments impact the geochemical behaviour of HMs in slag, contributing to the development of phytostabilization technology.

Biogeochemical transformation of sulfur and its effects on arsenic mobility in paddy fields polluted by acid mine drainage

This study aimed to study the biogeochemical behaviour of sulfur and its potential impact on arsenic in farmland polluted by acid mine drainage (AMD). Soil samples were collected from paddy fields that were near arsenic-rich coal mines. Different geochemical analysis technologies, combined with the study of microbial populations, were used to analyse the enrichment and transformation characteristics of exogenous sulfur in the soil profile as well as their coupling effect with arsenic transformation. The results showed that sulfur, iron, and arsenic were obviously enriched in the soil, and sulfur easily migrated to deeper layers. The content of arsenic in contaminated soil was about 1.30-3.14 times higher compared to standard Chinese soil quality. Polluted soil had a higher content of bioavailable sulfur and adsorbed sulfur accounted for about 29% of the total sulfur. This promoted an increased microbial population abundance of Desulfosporosinus. The δ³⁴S values of the polluted soil were lower than the background, ranging from -0.69‰ to 11.44‰, but were higher than the theoretical values. There was evidence of dissimilatory sulfur reduction and enrichment in ³⁴S. A significant positive correlation was observed between the contents of adsorbed sulfur and total arsenic. The biogeochemical transformation of sulfur was conducive to the transformation of iron oxide-bound arsenic into sulfide minerals, which enhanced its stability. These results provide theoretical support for understanding the cycling transformation and environmental impact of sulfur in paddy fields polluted by AMD.

Fate and removal of antimony in response to stringent control activities after a mine tailing spill

When tailing spill accidents occur, the risk of contamination by antimony (Sb) tailings into adjacent rivers, sediments, aquifers and soil environments is high. The Sb concentrations in water and sediment under different stringent control activities were investigated for 60 days in the Jialing River basin after a tailing spill accident. Both reservoir regulation and the construction of a temporary dam with coagulation dosing remarkably reduced the Sb levels in the river water. The increase in dissolved Sb caused by the spill was reduced from ~400 μg/L in the inflow to ~200 μg/L in the outflow by reservoir regulation. Moreover, reservoir regulation led to a high concentration of Sb in the reservoir sediment, which was difficult to remove and may cause subsequent unpredictable long-term ecological and health risks. In contrast, the Sb-enriched deposition inside the temporary dam was convenient to remove. Notably, temperature alternations between day and night in winter resulted in a large fluctuation in coagulation efficiency, which may cause the failure of stringent control projects. The results of this study suggest potential improvements to stringent control activities after mine tailing accidents to mitigate environmental impacts and prevent secondary risks.

Geochemical behaviour of rare earths in Vitis vinifera grafted onto different rootstocks and growing on several soils

The geochemical behaviour of lanthanides and yttrium (Rare Earth Elements, REEs) has been investigated mainly in geological systems where these elements represent the best proxies of processes involving the occurrence of an interface between different media. This behaviour is assessed according to features recorded in sequences of REE concentrations along the REE series normalised with respect to a reference material. In this study, the geochemical behaviour of REE was investigated in different parts of Vitis vinifera specimens grown off-soil, on soils of different nature and grafted onto several rootstocks in order to evaluate effects induced by these changes. The results indicated that roots are the plant organs where REEs are preferentially concentrated, in particular elements from Sm to Ho (middle REE, MREE) whereas Eu enrichments occur in aerial parts. The geochemical behaviour of REE suggests that MREE enrichments in roots are due to preferential MREE interactions with biological membranes or to surface complexation with newly formed phosphates. Eu-positive anomalies suggest that Eu(3+) can form stable organic complexes in place of Ca(2+) in several biological processes in xylem fluids. The possibility that Eu mobility in these fluids can be enhanced by its reductive speciation as Eu(2+) cannot be ruled out. The assessment of the geochemical behaviour of REE according to the theory of the Tetrad Effect carried out confirms that REEs coming from soil are scavenged onto root tissues or mineral surfaces whereas their behaviour in aerial parts of V. vinifera is driven by dissolved complexation.
