Mass scale synthesis of graphene nanosheets using waste cardboard for application in perovskite solar cells and supercapacitors

Advanced graphene-based materials have been proficiently incorporated into next-generation solar cells and supercapacitors because of their high electrical conductivity, large surface area, excellent charge-transport ability, and exceptional optical properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of graphene nanosheets (GNs) from waste cardboard via pyrolysis, with ethyl alcohol as the growth initiator. Additionally, we demonstrated the use of GNs in energy conversion and storage applications. Using the GN electrode in perovskite solar cells resulted in an excellent power conversion efficiency of ∼10.41 % for an active area of 1 cm2, indicating an enhancement of approximately 27 % compared to conventional electrodes. Furthermore, the GNs were used as active electrode materials in supercapacitors with excellent electrochemical performance and a high gravimetric specific capacitance of 167.5 F/g at a scan rate of 2 mV/s. The developed GNs can be efficiently used for energy storage, conversion, and electrochemical sensing applications.

Probing interaction of atherogenic lysophosphatidylcholine with functionalized graphene nanosheets: theoretical modelling and experimental validation

CONTEXT

The potential of graphene derivatives for theranostic applications depends on their compatibility with cellular and biomolecular components. Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), a lipid component present in oxidized low-density lipoproteins, microvesicles and free circulation in blood, plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of various diseases. Using density functional theory-based methods, we systematically investigated the interaction of atherogenic LPC molecule with different derivatives of graphene, including pristine graphene, graphene with defect, N-doped graphene, amine-functionalized graphene, various graphene oxides and hydroxylated graphene oxides. We observed that the adsorption of LPC on graphene derivatives is highly selective based on the orientation of the functional groups of LPC interacting with the surface of the derivatives. Hydroxylated graphene oxide exhibited the strongest interaction with LPC with adsorption energy of - 2.1 eV due to the interaction between the hydroxyl group on graphene and the phosphate group of LPC. The presence of aqueous medium further enhanced this interaction indicating favourable adsorption of LPC and graphene oxide in biological systems. Such strong interaction leads to substantial change in the electronic structure of the LPC molecule, which results in the activation of this molecule. In contrast, amine-modified graphene showed the least interaction. These theoretical results are in line with our experimental fluorescence spectroscopic data of LPC/1-anilino-8-napthalene sulfonic acid complex. Our present comprehensive investigation employing both theoretical and experimental methods provides a deeper understanding of graphene-lipid interaction, which holds paramount importance in the design and fabrication of graphene-based nanomaterials for biomedical applications.

METHODS

In this study, we employed the density functional theory-based methods to investigate the electronic and structural properties of graphene derivatives and LPC molecule using the Quantum Espresso package. The exchange-correlation functional was described within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) as parameterized by Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof (PBE). The valence electrons were represented using plane wave basis sets. `The Grimme's dispersion method was used to include the van der Waals dispersion correction.

Impacts of ruthenium valence state on the electrocatalytic activity of ruthenium ion-complexed graphitic carbon nitride/reduced graphene oxide nanosheets towards hydrogen evolution reaction

Design and engineering of effective electrode catalysts represents a critical first step for hydrogen production by electrochemical water splitting. Nanocomposites based on ruthenium atomically dispersed within a carbon scaffold have emerged as viable candidates. In the present study, ruthenium metal centers are atomically embedded within graphitic carbon nitride/reduced graphene oxide nanosheets by thermal refluxing. Subsequent chemical reduction/oxidation leads to ready manipulation of the ruthenium valence state, as evidenced in microscopic and spectroscopic measurements, and hence enhancement/diminishment of the electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution reaction in both acidic and alkaline media. This is largely ascribed to the increased/reduced contribution of the Ru valence electrons to the density of state near the Fermi level which dictates the binding and reduction of hydrogen. Results from this study highlight the significance of the valence state of metal centers in the manipulation and optimization of the catalytic performance of single atom catalysts.

Fabrication of polyvinyl alcohol-graphene nanosheet nanocomposite loading of omega-3 fatty acids for ceramic engineering

Objectives

Many people all around the world encounter major problems due to nervous system injuries. Among the various methods of treating, neural tissue engineering has attracted a lot of attention from nerve science researchers.

Materials and Methods

There are various methods for fabrication of soft tissue, however the electrospinning method (ELS) is a simple and cost-effective method that can produce porous fiber scaffolds to simulate the environment of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In this study, an ELS technique was used to fabricate polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) tissues and graphene nanosheet (Gr-NS) added with omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) was loaded in these tissues that support nerve tissue regeneration. For this purpose, PVA and Gr-NS for biaxial ELS, PVA containing 0.5 wt%, and 1 wt% of Gr-NS was used.. Then, the morphology of these scaffolds was observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique.

Results

The results show after loading of O3FA, the fiber diameter reaches 0.573±0.12 µm, which is within the range of dimensions required for nerve tissue engineering. FTIR analysis indicates that Gr-NS and O3FA have been well loaded in the scaffolds. The results of water absorption and biodegradation tests demonstrated that the sample with 0.5% Gr-NS has 211.98% and 16.54% water absorption and biodegradation after 48 hr and 6 days, respectively.

Conclusion

Finally, the results of this study indicate that scaffolds loaded with 0.5% Gr-NS have a homogeneous, porous, and integrated structure which can be effective in nerve tissue engineering.

Predictive models for adsorption of organic compounds by Graphene nanosheets: comparison with carbon nanotubes

The Linear Solvation Energy Relationships (LSER) technique was applied in the present study for predicting models of organic compounds (OCs) adsorption by Graphene and Graphene oxide (GO), and the results were compared with those of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT). Adsorption database of 38 OCs (28 aromatic and 10 aliphatic) for Graphene and 69 OCs (59 aromatic and 10 aliphatic) for GO were collected from the literature and our laboratory. The r² of the LSER models on the adsorption of aromatic OCs by Graphene and GO at three different equilibrium concentrations gradually increased up to OC molecular weight of 400 g/mol, after which a declining trend was observed for GO, while there was no visible change for Graphene. Among descriptors for all LSER models, V (molecular volume) and B (hydrogen bond accepting) for Graphene nanosheets (GNS) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were the most significant descriptors (p values ≤ 0.05). B term had high value and was negatively correlated with adsorption of all OCs by Graphene (-1.24 to -9.45), GO (-0.55 to -9.31), SWCNT (-0.10 to -5.38) and MWCNT (-1.24 to -1.85). LSER successfully trained models for adsorption of OCs by GNS, and model coefficients were dependent on adsorbent type and OC properties.

Glycated hemoglobin detection with electrochemical sensing amplified by gold nanoparticles embedded N-doped graphene nanosheet

In the diabetic patients the level of glucose must be determined without any short term fluctuations. The level of Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is accordingly examined for checking diabetes mellitus. HbA1c is considered one of the primarily factor to discern the concentration of average plasma glucose over a long-drawn-out period. In our work, we describe a construction of biosensor which is based on fructosyl amino-acid oxidase (FAO) immobilized nitrogen-doped graphene/gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)/fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass electrode. This constructed biosensor exhibits a wide linear range of 0.3 to 2000μM in response to HbA1c at +0.2V. Consequently, the detection limit of 0.2μM and good stability (4 months) were achieved. The electrocatalytic activity of this sensor was good as a result of synergistic effect of graphene and AuNPs (2D and 0D nanomaterials). The charge transfer resistance was decreased which was observed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study. The graphene/AuNPs composites film reveals a distinguished electrochemical response to fructosyl valine (FV) which demonstrates a promising application for electrochemical detection of HbA1c in human blood samples.

Influence of carbon-based nanomaterials on lux-bioreporter Escherichia coli

The cytotoxic effects of carbon-based nanomaterials are evaluated via the induction of luminescent genetically engineered Escherichia coli bacterial cells. Specifically, two engineered E. coli bacteria strains of DPD2794 and TV1061 were incubated with aqueous dispersion of three carbon allotropes (multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene nanosheets and carbon black nanopowders) with different concentrations and the resulting bioluminescence was recorded at 30°C and 25°C, respectively. The corresponding optical density changes of bacterial cells in the presence of various carbon nanomaterials were recorded as well. Based on these results, E. coli DPD2794 bacterial induction responds to a greater degree than E. coli TV1061 bacteria when exposed to various carbon-based nanomaterials. Finally, the surface morphology of E. coli DPD2794 bacteria cells before and after carbon-based nanomaterials treatment was observed using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), from which morphological changes from the presence of carbon-based nanomaterials were observed and discussed.
