UV-derived double crosslinked PEO-based solid polymer electrolyte for room temperature

The low ionic conductivity at room temperature and poor dimensional stability at high temperature of polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based solid electrolytes greatly limit the development and utilization of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). To reconcile the contradiction between electrochemical performance and mechanical strength of PEO-based SPEs, a cross-linking structure with active -CH2CH2O- soft chains that doped with rigid segments is designed and prepared through a method of green ultraviolet irradiation without solvent. The obtained solid film shows a high ionic conductivity of 0.2 mS·cm-1 and an ionic transference number of 0.51 at room temperature. The activation energy value of 1.92 kJ·mol-1 gives evidence for a favorable migration mechanism of PTP-SPE. A combination of flexibility and strength can be realized by molecular structure design with a tensile elongation of 40%. The reversible overpotential in galvanostatic cycling over 500 h of a Li||Li symmetrical cell indicates that the compact PTP-SPE can inhibit the formation of lithium dendrites. This work provides a new strategy for designing high-performance composite solid electrolytes at room temperature.

An Ultrathin, Flexible Solid Electrolyte with High Ionic Conductivity Enhanced by a Mutual Promotion Mechanism

The pursuit of strong endurance and nonflammable performances has promoted demand for solid-state batteries (SSBs). Meanwhile, the reduction of electrolytes' thickness is the key to improving battery performance. However, a large-scale feasible method to fabricate an ultrathin solid electrolyte exhibiting high ionic conductivities is still a challenge. Here, we show a large-scale feasible method to prepare a succinonitrile/polyacrylonitrile(SN/PAN)-coated Li_6.4La₃Zr_1.4Ta_0.6O₁₂ (LLZTO) with flexibility and high ionic conductivity by tape-casting. The unique dual polymer-coated garnet electrolytes exhibit structural stability through mutual promotion, constructing soft interparticle contact that provides fast lithium-ion transfer channels. In essence, the mutual promotion mechanism is that SN can improve the Li⁺ conductivity of PAN, while PAN can protect SN from aggregation. Therefore, the flexible SN/PAN-coated LLZTO provides high structural stability and satisfactory electrochemical performance, contributing to a high ionic conductivity of 4 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 at room temperature (RT). In this way, a long lifespan of over 500 cycles and a high discharge capacity (163 mAh g^-1) are achieved based on LiFePO4 (LFP) cathodes at 0.2 C.

Mild synthesis of superadhesive hydrogel electrolyte with low interfacial resistance and enhanced ionic conductivity for flexible zinc ion battery

Flexible aqueous battery is considered to be one of the most promising energy storage devices for powering flexible electronics. However, inferior interfacial compatibility in electrode-electrolyte interfaces and inefficient ionic channel of electrolytes usually result in potential troubles when applied in practical applications. Herein, we report a mild synthetic route to a sodium lignosulfonate-polyacrylamide hydrogel electrolyte with a high adhesiveness to achieve low electrode-electrolyte interfacial resistance and fast ionic conduction. Comprehensive experiments show that the catechol groups from sodium lignosulfonate demonstrate strong interactions with both cathode and anode materials, and thus greatly reduce the contact resistances across the electrodes. Meanwhile, the existence of sulfonate groups significantly enhances the ionic conductivity of the hydrogel electrolyte. Benefiting from this design, a low ohmic resistance of 3.8 Ω (i.e., 11.4 Ω cm² ), a low charge transfer resistance of 22.5 Ω (i.e., 67.5 Ω cm² ), a high ionic conductivity of 31.1 mS cm^-1 as well as a 100% capacity retention upon harsh bending deformation can be realized in the flexible zinc ion battery, which are significantly superior to those in the traditional candidates. The present investigation provides new insight into addressing the interfacial issue plaguing flexible energy storage devices.

Nickel phosphate nanorod-enhanced polyethylene oxide-based composite polymer electrolytes for solid-state lithium batteries

Solid-state electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, large electrochemical window, and excellent stability with lithium electrode are needed for high-energy solid-state lithium batteries. In this work, a novel polyethylene oxide (PEO)-Lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-nanocomposite-based polymer electrolyte was prepared by using nickel phosphate (VSB-5) nanorods as the filler. The ionic conductivity of the obtained PEO-LiTFSI-3%VSB-5 solid polymer electrolyte was found to be as high as 4.83 × 10^-5 S·cm^-1 at 30 °C and electrochemically stable up to about 4.13 V versus Li/Li⁺. The enhanced ionic conductivity was attributed to the reduced crystallinity of the PEO and the interaction between VSB and 5 and PEO-LiTFSI. In addition, the solid polymer electrolyte exhibited improved compatibility to the lithium metal anode with excellent suppression of lithium dendrites. The assembled LiFePO₄/Li battery with the PEO-LiTFSI-3%VSB-5 solid polymer electrolyte showed better rate performance and higher cyclic stability than the PEO-LiTFSI electrolyte. It is demonstrated that this new solid polymer hybrid should be a promising electrolyte applied in solid state batteries with lithium metal electrode.
