Rainfall-runoff modelling based on global climate model and tropical rainfall measuring mission (GCM -TRMM): A case study in Hulu Terengganu catchment, Malaysia

The hydropower Plant in Terengganu is one of the major hydroelectric dams currently operated in Malaysia. For better operating and scheduling, accurate modelling of natural inflow is vital for a hydroelectric dam. The rainfall-runoff model is among the most reliable models in predicting the inflow based on the rainfall events. Such a model's reliability depends entirely on the reliability and consistency of the rainfall events assessed. However, due to the hydropower plant's remote location, the cost associated with maintaining the installed rainfall stations became a burden. Therefore, the study aims to create a continuous set of rainfall data before, during, and after the construction of a hydropower plant and simulate a rainfall-runoff model for the area. It also examines the reliability of alternative methods by combining rainfall data from two sources: the general circulation model and tropical rainfall measuring mission. Rainfall data from ground stations and generated data using inverse distance weighted method will be compared. The statistical downscaling model will obtain regional rainfall from the general circulation model. The data will be divided into three stages to evaluate the accuracy of the models in capturing inflow changes. The results revealed that rainfall data from TRMM is more correlated to ground station data with R2 = 0.606, while SDSM data has R2 = 0.592. The proposed inflow model based on GCM-TRMM data showed higher precision compared to the model using ground station data. The proposed model consistently predicted inflow during three stages with R2 values ranging from 0.75 to 0.93.

Bed-material entrainment in a mountain river affected by hydropeaking

Hydropeaking, by artificially generated flow peaks, influences hydro-sedimentary dynamics on rivers and, consequently, affects bed material entrainment and transport. This study examines the onset of motion of sediment particles in four sections of a Pyrenean gravel-to-cobble bed river exposed to frequent hydropeaking (once per day, on average). Five criteria of particle entrainment have been used to assess the prediction of the initiation of grain motion at-a-section scale. Theoretical entrainment conditions were validated using real observations of mobility by means of tracers. It was found that the maximum flow discharged by the hydropower plant mostly affects the furthest downstream section, located almost 17 km downstream, in which the finer fractions of the bed are entrained. The mobile grain sizes include up to coarse gravels (≈ 30 mm). Differences in sediment supply (imposed by tributaries), the value of the bed slope and the structure of the coarse surface layer decisively control the downstream variability of incipient particle motion between sections. Results from a 17 km study segment indicated that hydropeaking generate partial transport, that is, a partially size-selective transport that occurs downstream from the hydropower plant and winnows the sand and small gravel further downstream, increasing armouring and depleting fine sediments.

Reduction of the environmental impacts of the hydropower plant by microalgae cultivation and biodiesel production

Hydropower plants supply their energy needs for electricity generation from rivers or water canals, so these power plants cannot be used for sustainable electricity generation, and the best time to use these power plants is during peak power consumption. These power plants are less polluting in terms of environment than other power plants, but they also have negative environmental effects, such as freshwater eutrophication and water salinity or microalgae. This study focused its attention on microalgae extraction as an environmentally friendly method to reduce water salinity and how they can be used for biodiesel production as an auxiliary fuel to enhance the energy production by hydropower plants. The information of the sample hydroelectric power plant (Gotvand Dam) that was required for the processing and simulation process is stated. The step-by-step simulation is reviewed and the results and optimizations are described. The highest separation of microalgae for 1 min electrolysis with distance of 1 cm between the two electrodes is 90%, which reduces the salt content of the water in which the microalgae is grown by 13%. The maximum separation of salt from water is 19.5%, which is reduced to 9.5% in the centrifuge method. Water salinity reduction to microalgae extraction ratio is 14.45%. The optimal combination of diesel and biodiesel is 80%-20%. As can be seen from the results it is recommended to use microalgae for reducing negative environmental impacts in addition to increasing the power generation capacities of hydropower plants. Also more specific studies on terms of the culture of the microalgae and its individual cultivation methods for hydropower plants beneficial programs should be taken into account and be used by policy makers in the future.

Impact of downstream passage through hydropower plants on the physiological and health status of a critically endangered species: The European eel Anguilla anguilla

Hydropower plants (HPPs) are a source of "green" energy but also a threat to migrating fish such as the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) owing to the disruption of river connectivity and the obstruction of downstream migration. The impact of HPP are well-documented in terms of fish survival and damages but there is no available information concerning the condition of surviving and unharmed fish. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of the passage through HPP on the survival, the physiological and health status of adult eels. Two trials were carried with variants of the Kaplan turbine - one of the most common types in Europe. After a deliberate passage through the turbines, we studied direct mortality, external and internal damages, stress and immune biomarkers such as plasma cortisol and glucose levels, alternative complement (ACH50), lysozyme and peroxidase activities, and total immunoglobulin (Ig) content. Our results showed a lower survival and a higher external and internal damages rates in the HPP groups. Glucose levels, ACH50, lysozyme and peroxidase activities and TIgc were also affected by the passage depending on HPP characteristics. Those findings suggest a greater energy expenditure and a disruption in innate immunity due to this passage. HPPs can not only have an impact in terms of direct mortality and injuries but also affect the physiological and health condition of the surviving eels. This impact may explain the delayed mortality observed in telemetric studies and the passage through many HPPs may compromise the ability of adult eels to migrate successfully to the ocean.

Passage through a hydropower plant affects the physiological and health status of Atlanstic salmon smolts

Atlantic salmon is an anadromous species migrating from upper-reach nursery areas in rivers to the oceanic feeding areas at smolt stage and inversely at adult stage requiring unimpeded migration routes. However, dams associated with hydroelectric power plants (HPP) disrupt river connectivity and affect fish movement and survival. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the short and mid-term physiological and immune response of Atlantic salmon smolts after passing through Andenne HPP (Meuse River, Belgium). Several parameters were studied after an in situ deliberate passage including direct mortality and external damages, stress and immune biomarkers as plasma cortisol and glucose levels, complement and peroxidase activities, and immune and oxidative stress related gene expression 24 h, 72 h and 120 h after passage. Survival rate was lower and external damages were more important in fish that confronted the HPP compared to the control ones. Moreover, the passage through the turbine affected plasma glucose levels, complement and peroxidase activities and the expression of some immune genes such as lysg, igm and mpo in a timely manner suggesting that this passage can lead to a great energy expenditure and a disruption of innate immunity. Our observations can partially explain the delayed mortality observed in many studies leading to a poor success of restocking programs. HPPs not only have a direct impact in terms of mortalities and injuries but also an indirect one in terms of physiological and immune changes that can compromise Atlantic salmon smolts ability to escape successfully to the ocean.

Multi-marker study of the responses of the Unio tumidus from the areas of small and micro hydropower plants at the Dniester River Basin, Ukraine

The impact of the hydropower plants (HPPs) on the aquatic life is expected, but the biochemical markers of ecotoxicity have not been investigated in relation to HPP proximity. The aim of this study was to compare the responses of mollusk Unio tumidus from the small HPP (reservoir (Ku) and downstream of the dam (Kd)) and micro HPP (upstream (Zu) and downstream of the dam (Zd)). In total, 11 indexes (n) from digestive gland, hemocytes (lysosomal integrity), and gonads (alkali-labile phosphates, ALP) were analyzed. The mollusks from the reservoir demonstrate the typical signs of toxic impact: cholinesterase and glutathione depletion, the highest glutathione S-transferase activity, and ratio of extralysosomal cathepsin D compare to all other groups. The specimens from the micro HPP have the highest levels of glutathione (Zd) and lipid peroxidation (Zu) and lesser Cu/Zn-SOD activity (Zu) than other groups. These indications of stressful conditions may derive from the regular oscillations in the water flow regimes at the micro HPP. For both HPPs, the responses of upstream and downstream groups are distinct. The calculated IBR/n (4.17, 3.85, 3.12, and 0.26 for Ku, Kd, Zu, and Zd correspondingly) gives a quantitative basis for the evaluation of environmental impact of HPPs. Graphical abstract .

Difference in biochemical markers in the gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) upstream and downstream of the hydropower plant

However the physiological stress in aquatic organisms associated with hydropower plants (HPP) ecosystems has been previously investigated, no studies have so far assessed it on biochemical level. Therefore this study evaluated an oxidative stress and toxicity in the gibel carp Carassius auratus gibelio associated with a small-scale HPP in the West Ukraine. A battery of liver, brain and blood markers was evaluated individuals inhabiting upstream and downstream of the dam of the small-scale Kasperivtci HPP (KHPP; an installed capacity of 7.5 MW), and from a reference site. Number of alterations were noted in fish from the KHPP impoundment facility including signs of oxidative stress (a decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and an increase in protein carbonyls) and cytotoxicity (an increase in micronucleated erythrocytes and caspase-3 activity). No changes in DNA fragmentation in hepatocytes or brain cholinesterase activity were detected. As demonstrated by the integral stress index, fish associated with downstream of the dam revealed the greatest alterations reflected by the combined oppression of antioxidant system (SOD, catalase) and pro-oxidants (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and oxyradicals), low concentration of metallothioneins, but high cathepsin D activity (as markers of lysosomal dysfunction and autophagy) and increased vitellogenin concentration in males (indicating an endocrine disruption). The study highlights that fish inhabiting ecosystems associated with HPP, particularly downstream of the dam, may face additional stresses with long-term effects yet to be evaluated.

Comparison of environmental flow assessment methods with a case study on a runoff river-type hydropower plant using hydrological methods

This paper focuses on the environmental flow assessment (EFA) methods that maintain the river ecosystem and its integrity for hydropower plants (HPP) with their implementations on a run-off river type HPP. EFA is a crucial phenomenon in terms of electricity production and sustaining river integrity simultaneously. The novelty of this study is that it consists both a comparison of widely used preferred EFA methods and a detailed investigation of the river with pre and post-dam flow regimes. The research shows that by expanding the content and scope of the methods, their relative reliabilities increase. However, this situation requires much more expert, money, and time. Apart from most of the relevant literature, pre and post-dam situations are investigated with a flow duration curve (FDC). It is concluded that the dramatic difference between the flow characteristics of pre and post-dam situations affects long-term aquatic life. Furthermore, a case study is conducted using the selected hydrological flow assessment methods, Tennant and Tessman methods, and comparisons are made. The calculated flows are compared with monthly average flow values before dam construction, projected environmental flow data, and the current situation. Accordingly, Tennant's "good classification" is proposed to determine the environmental flow (EF) for the considered case study.
