Strut and radio-morphometric analysis of mandibular trabecular structure in pre-and post-menopausal women to aid in the diagnosis of osteoporosis

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the mandibular trabecular pattern in pre- and postmenopausal age women. By analysing the strut, fractal, grey level co-occurrence matrix, and radio-morphometric indices in the panoramic radiograph.

Method

Panoramic radiographs from 2019 to 2022 were used to assess pre- and postmenopausal women's bone mineral density. A total of 272 panoramic radiographs, which exhibited clear visibility of the mental foramen on both sides without any blurring, motion artefacts, surgical errors, overlapping hyoid bone, or inferior mandibular cortex, were divided into two groups. Group A (136 premenopausal women) and Group B (136 postmenopausal women). It is a retrospective study that is non-interventional/observational in design. Strut features, fractal dimensions, a grey-level co-occurrence matrix, and radio morphometric indices were used to investigate bone texture in an image processing program. The mean difference between group variables was calculated using an independent sample t-test/unpaired t-test.

Results

Pre-menopausal women had a mean age of 38.83 ± 6.01 years, while postmenopausal women had a mean age of 68.26 ± 8.31 In the postmenopausal group Four regions of interest exhibited fractal dimensions with a P value of less than 0.01 and GLCM features including contrast (0.812), correlation (0.230), energy (0.215), and homogeneity (0.322). Strut features of the four regions showed that 15 of 19 characteristics were significantly different.

Conclusion

Orthopantomogram is useful in screening for osteoporosis. Strut, radio-morphometric indices, and fractal analysis can assess bone texture and quality. Future research incorporating artificial intelligence can revolutionize image analysis and support clinical decision-making.

Perceiving placental ultrasound image texture evolution during pregnancy with normal and adverse outcome through machine learning prism

INTRODUCTION

The objective was to perform placental ultrasound image texture (UPIA) in first (T1), second(T2) and third(T3) trimesters of pregnancy using machine learning( ML).

METHODS

In this prospective observational study the 2D placental ultrasound (US) images from 11-14 weeks, 20-24 weeks, and 28-32 weeks were taken. The image data was divided into training, validating, and testing subsets in the ratio of 80%, 10%, and 10%. Three different ML techniques, deep learning, transfer learning, and vision transformer were used for UPIA.

RESULTS

Out of 1008 cases included in the study, 59.5% (600/1008) had a normal outcome. The image texture classification was compared between T1&T2, T2 &T3 and T1&T3 pairs. Using Inception v3 model, to classify T1& T2 images, gave the accuracy, Cohen Kappa score of 83.3%, 0.662 respectively. The image classification between T1&T3 achieved best results using EfficientNetB0 model, having the accuracy, Cohen Kappa score, sensitivity and specificity of 87.5%, 0.749, 83.4%, and 88.9% respectively. Comparison of placental image texture among cases with materno-fetal adverse outcome and controls was done using Efficient Net B0. The F1 score, was found to be 0.824 , 0.820, and 0.892 in T1, T2 and T3 respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the model was 77.4% at 80.2% at T1 but increased to 81.0% and 93.9% at T2 &T3 respectively.

DISCUSSION

The study presents a novel technique to classify placental ultrasound image texture using ML models and could differentiate first and third-trimester normal placenta and normal and adverse pregnancy outcome images with good accuracy.

Noise power spectrum properties of deep learning-based reconstruction and iterative reconstruction algorithms: Phantom and clinical study

PURPOSE

To compare the noise power spectrum (NPS) properties and perform a qualitative analysis of hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR), model-based IR (MBIR), and deep learning-based reconstruction (DLR) at a similar noise level in clinical study and compare these outcomes with those in phantom study.

METHODS

A Catphan phantom with an external body ring was used in the phantom study. In the clinical study, computed tomography (CT) examination data of 34 patients were reviewed. NPS was calculated from DLR, hybrid IR, and MBIR images. The noise magnitude ratio (NMR) and the central frequency ratio (CFR) were calculated from DLR, hybrid IR, and MBIR images relative to filtered back-projection images using NPS. Clinical images were independently reviewed by two radiologists.

RESULTS

In the phantom study, DLR with a mild level had a similar noise level as hybrid IR and MBIR with strong levels. In the clinical study, DLR with a mild level had a similar noise level as hybrid IR with standard and MBIR with strong levels. The NMR and CFR were 0.40 and 0.76 for DLR, 0.42 and 0.55 for hybrid IR, and 0.48 and 0.62 for MBIR. The visual inspection of the clinical DLR image was superior to that of the hybrid IR and MBIR images.

CONCLUSION

Deep learning-based reconstruction improves overall image quality with substantial noise reduction while maintaining image noise texture compared with the CT reconstruction techniques.

Vector textures derived from higher order derivative domains for classification of colorectal polyps

Textures have become widely adopted as an essential tool for lesion detection and classification through analysis of the lesion heterogeneities. In this study, higher order derivative images are being employed to combat the challenge of the poor contrast across similar tissue types among certain imaging modalities. To make good use of the derivative information, a novel concept of vector texture is firstly introduced to construct and extract several types of polyp descriptors. Two widely used differential operators, i.e., the gradient operator and Hessian operator, are utilized to generate the first and second order derivative images. These derivative volumetric images are used to produce two angle-based and two vector-based (including both angle and magnitude) textures. Next, a vector-based co-occurrence matrix is proposed to extract texture features which are fed to a random forest classifier to perform polyp classifications. To evaluate the performance of our method, experiments are implemented over a private colorectal polyp dataset obtained from computed tomographic colonography. We compare our method with four existing state-of-the-art methods and find that our method can outperform those competing methods over 4%-13% evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristics curves.

Quantitative response of healthy muscle following the induction of capsaicin: an exploratory randomized controlled trial

Background

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a prevalent chronic pain disorder primarily characterized by myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). There is limited knowledge on the pathophysiology and mechanisms underlying MTrP and its development. Research has previously demonstrated the identification of MTrPs using ultrasound and vibration sonoelastography, although there is some contradictory evidence regarding if MTrPs present as hyper or hypoechoic regions. Electromyography (EMG) investigations of MTrP have demonstrated that MTrPs are usually located proximal to innervation zones where the peak surface EMG signals are obtained from. Central sensitization has been proposed as the primary mechanism underlying MTrP development. Central sensitization is associated with hyperexcitability of neuronal responses to normal or noxious stimuli. There is a need for a study that measures ultrasound image textural changes and motor unit activity responses in the muscle following sensitization. The purpose of this study is to determine whether sensitizing healthy muscle using capsaicin induces a regional change in image texture variables within the specific and surrounding muscles, as well as the motor unit frequency and amplitude changes that accompany them. This is an exploratory trial that aims to provide preliminary evidence on whether central sensitization is a direct cause of taut band and MTrP development.

Methods

Ethical approval was obtained from the University Health Network (UHN) Research Ethics Board. This proposed study is a single centered, factorial, randomized placebo-controlled trial with two independent variables, depth of capsaicin application and dose of capsaicin, for a total of six treatment arms and three control treatment groups.

Discussion

This will be the first study that assesses the B-mode ultrasound image texture of induced sensitized muscles and will provide more evidence on muscle motor unit activity and regional changes of central sensitization. Findings from this study may support one of few hypotheses proposed delineating the involvement of central sensitization in the development of trigger points.

MRI texture analysis in acromegaly and its role in predicting response to somatostatin receptor ligands

PURPOSE

Given the paucity of reliable predictors of tumor recurrence, progression, or response to somatostatin receptor ligand (SRL) therapy in acromegaly, we attempted to determine whether preoperative MR image texture was predictive of these clinical outcomes. We also determined whether image texture could differentiate somatotroph adenomas from non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs).

METHODS

We performed a retrospective study of patients with acromegaly due to a macroadenoma who underwent transsphenoidal surgery at our institution between 2007 and 2015. Clinical data were extracted from electronic medical records. MRI texture analysis was performed on preoperative non-enhanced T1-weighted images using ImageJ (NIH). Logistic and Cox models were used to determine if image texture parameters predicted outcomes.

RESULTS

Eighty-nine patients had texture parameters measured, which were compared to that of NFPAs, while 64 of these patients had follow-up and were included in the remainder of analyses. Minimum pixel intensity, skewness, and kurtosis were significantly different in somatotroph adenomas versus NFPAs (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.7771, for kurtosis). Furthermore, those with a maximum pixel intensity above the median had an increased odds of IGF-I normalization on SRL therapy (OR 5.96, 95% CI 1.33-26.66), which persisted after adjusting for several potential predictors of response. Image texture did not predict tumor recurrence or progression.

CONCLUSION

Our data suggest that MRI texture analysis can distinguish NFPAs from somatotroph macroadenomas with good diagnostic accuracy and can predict normalization of IGF-I with SRL therapy.

An Automatic Parameter Decision System of Bilateral Filtering with GPU-Based Acceleration for Brain MR Images

Bilateral filters have been extensively utilized in a number of image denoising applications such as segmentation, registration, and tissue classification. However, it requires burdensome adjustments of the filter parameters to achieve the best performance for each individual image. To address this problem, this paper proposes a computer-aided parameter decision system based on image texture features associated with neural networks. In our approach, parallel computing with the GPU architecture is first developed to accelerate the computation of the conventional bilateral filter. Subsequently, a back propagation network (BPN) scheme using significant image texture features as the input is established to estimate the GPU-based bilateral filter parameters and its denoising process. The k-fold cross validation method is exploited to evaluate the performance of the proposed automatic restoration framework. A wide variety of T1-weighted brain MR images were employed to train and evaluate this parameter-free decision system with GPU-based bilateral filtering, which resulted in a speed-up factor of 208 comparing to the CPU-based computation. The proposed filter parameter prediction system achieved a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 6% and was classified as "high accuracy". Our automatic denoising framework dramatically removed noise in numerous brain MR images and outperformed several state-of-the-art methods based on the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). The usage of image texture features associated with the BPN to estimate the GPU-based bilateral filter parameters and to automate the denoising process is feasible and validated. It is suggested that this automatic restoration system is advantageous to various brain MR image-processing applications.

A comprehensive review on the utility of capsule endoscopy in coeliac disease: From computational analysis to the bedside

Small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) can identify macroscopic changes of coeliac disease and assess the extent of disease in the small bowel beyond the duodenum. SBCE has a good sensitivity for the detection of coeliac disease in comparison to histology owing to several ideal features such as a high magnification. It also plays a useful role in detecting complications in patients with refractory coeliac disease. Several studies have been carried out on transforming images obtained from small bowel capsule endoscopy to enable the automated detection of features related to coeliac disease. This review discusses the current roles played by small bowel capsule endoscopy in coeliac disease. It identifies future potential roles of this technique and describes in great detail the role of computational analysis in the detection of coeliac disease and how it can be adapted to current available technology.

Fault detection and isolation in the challenging Tennessee Eastman process by using image processing techniques

The early fault detection and isolation in industrial systems is a critical factor in preventing equipment damage. In the proposed method, instead of using the time signals of sensors, the 2D image obtained by placing these signals next to each other in a matrix has been used; and then a novel fault detection and isolation procedure has been carried out based on image processing techniques. Different features including texture, wavelet transform, mean and standard deviation of the image accompanied with MLP and RBF neural networks based classifiers have been used for this purpose. Obtained results indicate the notable efficacy and success of the proposed method in detecting and isolating faults of the Tennessee Eastman benchmark process and its superiority over previous techniques.

CT-based radiomic model predicts high grade of clear cell renal cell carcinoma

PURPOSE

To compare the predictive models that can incorporate a set of CT image features for preoperatively differentiating the high grade (Fuhrman III-IV) from low grade (Fuhrman I-II) clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

One hundred and fourteen patients with ccRCC treated with a partial or radical nephrectomy were enrolled in the training cohort. The six non-texture features, including Pseudocapsule, Round mass, maximal tumor diameter (Diameter_max), intratumoral artery (Artery_tumor), enhancement value of the tumor (TEV) and relative TEV (rTEV), were assessed for each tumor. The texture features were extracted from the CT images of the section with the largest area of renal mass at both corticomedullary and nephrographic phases. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) was used to screen the most valuable texture features to calculate a texture score (Texture-score) for each patient. A logistic regression model was used in the training cohort to discriminate the high from low grade ccRCC at nephrectomy. The predictors would include all non-texture features in Model 1, all non-texture features and Texture-score in Model 2, and Texture-score in Model 3. The performance of the predictive models were tested and compared in an independent validation cohort composed of 92 cases with ccRCC.

RESULTS

Inter-rater agreement was good for each non-texture feature and Texture-score (the concordance correlation coefficient or Kappa coefficient > 0.70). The Texture-score was calculated via a linear combination of the 4 selected texture features. The three models shown good discrimination of the high from low grade ccRCC in the training cohort and the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.826 in Mode 1, 0.878 in Model 2 and 0.843 in Model 3, and a significant different AUC was found between Model 1 and Model 2. Application of the predictive models in the validation cohort still gave a discrimination (AUC > 0.670), and the Texture-score based models with or without the non-texture features (Model 2 and 3) showed a better discrimination of the high from low grade ccRCC (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

This study presented the Texture-score based models can facilitate the preoperative discrimination of the high from low grade ccRCC.

Quantitative imaging: Correlating image features with the segmentation accuracy of PET based tumor contours in the lung

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between image features extracted from PET images and the accuracy of manually drawn lesion contours in the lung. Such correlations are interesting in that they could potentially be used in predictive models to help guide physician contouring. In this work, 26 synthetic PET datasets were created using an anthropomorphic phantom and Monte Carlo simulation. Manual contours of simulated lesions were provided by 10 physicians. Contour accuracy was quantified using five commonly used similarity metrics which were then correlated with several features extracted from the images. Features were sub-divided into three groups using intensity, geometry, and texture as categorical descriptors. When averaged among the participants, the results showed relatively strong correlations with complexity and contrast_I (r≥0.65, p<0.001), and moderate correlations with several other image features (r≥0.5, p<0.01). The predictive nature of these correlations was improved through stepwise regression and the creation of multi-feature models. Imaging features were also correlated with the standard deviation of contouring error in order to investigate inter-observer variability. Several features were consistently identified as influential including integral of mean curvature and complexity. These relationships further the understanding as to what causes variation in the contouring of PET positive lesions.

Characterization of PET/CT images using texture analysis: the past, the present… any future?

After seminal papers over the period 2009 - 2011, the use of texture analysis of PET/CT images for quantification of intratumour uptake heterogeneity has received increasing attention in the last 4 years. Results are difficult to compare due to the heterogeneity of studies and lack of standardization. There are also numerous challenges to address. In this review we provide critical insights into the recent development of texture analysis for quantifying the heterogeneity in PET/CT images, identify issues and challenges, and offer recommendations for the use of texture analysis in clinical research. Numerous potentially confounding issues have been identified, related to the complex workflow for the calculation of textural features, and the dependency of features on various factors such as acquisition, image reconstruction, preprocessing, functional volume segmentation, and methods of establishing and quantifying correspondences with genomic and clinical metrics of interest. A lack of understanding of what the features may represent in terms of the underlying pathophysiological processes and the variability of technical implementation practices makes comparing results in the literature challenging, if not impossible. Since progress as a field requires pooling results, there is an urgent need for standardization and recommendations/guidelines to enable the field to move forward. We provide a list of correct formulae for usual features and recommendations regarding implementation. Studies on larger cohorts with robust statistical analysis and machine learning approaches are promising directions to evaluate the potential of this approach.
