Abstract
PM2.5 pollution is an environmental issue caused by multiple natural and socioeconomic factors, presenting with significant spatial disparities across mainland China. However, the determinant power of natural and socioeconomic factors and their interactive impact on PM2.5 pollution is still unclear. In the study, the GeogDetector method was used to quantify nonlinear associations between PM2.5 and potential factors. This study found that natural factors, including ecological environments and climate, were more influential than socioeconomic factors, and climate was the predominant factor (q = 0.56) in influencing PM2.5 pollution. Among all interactions of the six influencing factors, the interaction of industry and climate had the largest influence (q = 0.66). Two recognized major contaminated areas were the Tarim Basin in the northwest region and the eastern plain region; the former was mainly influenced by the warm temperate arid climate and desert, and the latter was mainly influenced by the warm temperate semi-humid climate and multiple socioeconomic factors. The findings provided an interpretation of the influencing mechanisms of PM2.5 pollution, which can contribute to more specific policies aimed at successful PM2.5 pollution control and abatement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little information exists regarding the interaction effects of obesity with long-term air pollution exposure on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and stroke in areas of high pollution. The aim of the present study is to examine whether obesity modifies CVD-related associations among people living in an industrial province of northeast China. METHODS We studied 24,845 Chinese adults, aged 18 to 74 years old, from three Northeastern Chinese cities in 2009 utilizing a cross-sectional study design. Body weight and height were measured by trained observers. Overweight and obesity were defined as a body mass index (BMI) between 25-29.9 and ≥30 kg/m(2), respectively. Prevalence rate and related risk factors of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases were investigated by a questionnaire. Three-year (2006-2008) average concentrations of particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxides (NO2), and ozone (O3) were measured by fixed monitoring stations. All the participants lived within 1 km of air monitoring sites. Two-level logistic regression (personal level and district-specific pollutant level) was used to examine these effects, controlling for covariates. RESULTS We observed significant interactions between exposure and obesity on CVDs and stroke. The associations between annual pollutant concentrations and CVDs and stroke were strongest in obese subjects (OR 1.15-1.47 for stroke, 1.33-1.59 for CVDs), less strong in overweight subjects (OR 1.22-1.35 for stroke, 1.07-1.13 for CVDs), and weakest in normal weight subjects (OR ranged from 0.98-1.01 for stroke, 0.93-1.15 for CVDs). When stratified by gender, these interactions were significant only in women. CONCLUSIONS Study findings indicate that being overweight and obese may enhance the effects of air pollution on the prevalence of CVDs and stroke in Northeastern metropolitan China. Further studies will be needed to investigate the temporality of BMI relative to exposure and onset of disease.

Abstract
Co-pyrolysis of biomass has a potential to change the quality of pyrolytic bio-oil. In this work, co-pyrolysis of bamboo, a typical lignocellulosic biomass, and Nannochloropsis sp. (NS), a microalgae, was carried out in a fixed bed reactor at a range of mixing ratio of NS and bamboo, to find out whether the quality of pyrolytic bio-oil was improved. A significant improvement on bio-oil after co-pyrolysis of bamboo and NS was observed that bio-oil yield increased up to 66.63wt% (at 1:1) and the content of long-chain fatty acids in bio-oil also dramatically increased (the maximum up to 50.92% (13.57wt%) at 1:1) whereas acetic acid, O-containing species, and N-containing compounds decreased greatly. Nitrogen transformation mechanism during co-pyrolysis also was explored. Results showed that nitrogen in microalgae preferred to transform into solid char and gas phase during co-pyrolysis, while more pyrrolic-N and quaternary-N generated with diminishing protein-N and pyridinic-N in char.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the association between air pollution and hypertension among children, and no studies report whether breastfeeding modifies this association in children. METHODS Nine thousand three hundred fifty-four Chinese children, ages 5-17 years old, from 24 elementary schools and 24 middle schools in the Seven Northeastern Cities during 2012-2013 were evaluated. The weight, height, and BP were measured. Four-year average concentrations of particles with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤10 μm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxides (NO2), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO) were calculated from monitoring stations. Two-level regression analysis was used to examine the effects, controlling for covariates. RESULTS The results showed that associations existed between hypertension and pollutants. The odds ratios for hypertension ranged from 1.12 per 46.3 μg/m3 increase for O3 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-1.13) to 1.68 per 30.6 μg/m3 increase for PM10 (95% CI, 1.53-1.86). The increases in mean diastolic BP ranged from 0.58 mm Hg per 46.3 μg/m3 increase for O3 (95% CI, 0.52-0.63 mm Hg) to 2.89 mm Hg per 563.4 μg/m3 increase for CO (95% CI: 2.53-3.24 mm Hg). The increase in systolic BP ranged from 0.50 mm Hg per 46.3 μg/m3 increase for O3 (95% CI: 0.43-0.57 mm Hg) to 2.10 mm Hg per 30.6 μg/m3 increase for PM10 (95% CI, 1.73-2.47 mm Hg). Compared with children who had been breastfed, non-breastfed children exhibited consistently stronger effects. CONCLUSION Study findings indicate that high levels of PM10, SO2, NO2, O3, and CO are associated with increased arterial BP and hypertension among the children. Breastfeeding may reduce the risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior studies have shown that climate factors and air pollution are associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) epidemics. However, the interaction between air pollution and climate factors remains unknown. METHODS Daily HFMD counts from 2009 through 2012 in Guangdong were collected. We used distributed lag non-linear models to assess the associations of climate factors and air pollution on HFMD cases. The effects of climate factors were stratified by air pollution stratum to examine the interaction effect of air quality index (AQI) and temperature, as well as relative humidity. In addition, we explored the variability across gender groups. RESULTS We observed associations between HFMD cases and environmental factors, including temperature, relative humidity, and AQI. The highest relative risks (RR) were observed at the middle level of temperature and AQI, and high level of relative humidity. The effects for the interaction between AQI and climate factors on HFMD cases were also statistically observed. Compared with low level temperatures (≤23.5 °C), high level temperatures (>23.5 °C) had a RR of 1.486 (95%CI: 1.469,1.503) on days with "good" air quality (AQI ≤ 46), and RR of 1.013 (95%CI: 1.003,1.023) on days with "moderate" air quality (AQI > 46). For relative humidity, the high level (>77%) had a RR of 1.082 (95%CI: 1.076,1.089) on days with "good" air quality, and RR of 1.039 (95%CI: 1.033,1.046) on days with "moderate" air quality. The associations and the interactions remained robust for males and females. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that climate factors and air pollution imposed lagged and non-linear effects on HFMD epidemics. The effects of climate factors on health potentially vary by AQI. Our study is practical and useful for targeted prevention and control, and provides environmental-based evidence.

Abstract
The incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased rapidly worldwide in recent years. Exposure to endocrine disruptors can affect thyroid hormones and is probably carcinogenic to humans. The effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), some heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As and Hg) on risk of TC have been rarely reported. Hence, we aimed to examine the associations of TC risk with exposure to PBDEs and four heavy metals. This case-control study involved 308 TC cases and 308 age- and sex-matched controls. Plasma PBDEs concentrations were determined by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. Concentrations of heavy metals concentrations in urine specimens were detected by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Conditional logistic regression models were used to explore associations of PBDEs and 4 heavy metals exposures with TC risk. A joint-effect interaction term was inserted into the logistic regression models to assess the multiplicative interaction effects of PBDEs-heavy metals on TC risk. Some PBDE congeners (BDE-028, -047, -099, -183, -209) were positively correlated with TC risk. As and Hg were also associated with the increased TC risk. Compared with low exposure levels, participants with high exposure levels of As and Hg were 5.35 and 2.98 times more likely to have TC, respectively. Co-exposure to BDE-209 and Pb had a negative interaction effect on TC risk. Some PBDE congeners (e.g. BDE-028, -047, -209) and Hg had a significant positive interaction effect on the risk of TC. The joint exposure of BDE-183 and Hg showed a negative interaction effect on TC risk, but the corresponding OR value was still statistically significant. Exposure to PBDEs, As and Hg may be associated with TC development. Joint exposure to PBDEs and Pb or Hg has interaction effects on TC risk. Further prospective research with large sample is required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various meteorological factors have been associated with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) among children; however, fewer studies have examined the non-linearity and interaction among the meteorological factors. METHODS A generalized additive model with a log link allowing Poisson auto-regression and over-dispersion was applied to investigate the short-term effects daily meteorological factors on children HFMD with adjustment of potential confounding factors. RESULTS We found positive effects of mean temperature and wind speed, the excess relative risk (ERR) was 2.75% (95% CI: 1.98%, 3.53%) for one degree increase in daily mean temperature on lag day 6, and 3.93% (95% CI: 2.16% to 5.73%) for 1m/s increase in wind speed on lag day 3. We found a non-linear effect of relative humidity with thresholds with the low threshold at 45% and high threshold at 85%, within which there was positive effect, the ERR was 1.06% (95% CI: 0.85% to 1.27%) for 1 percent increase in relative humidity on lag day 5. No significant effect was observed for rainfall and sunshine duration. For the interactive effects, we found a weak additive interaction between mean temperature and relative humidity, and slightly antagonistic interaction between mean temperature and wind speed, and between relative humidity and wind speed in the additive models, but the interactions were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that mean temperature, relative humidity and wind speed might be risk factors of children HFMD in Shenzhen, and the interaction analysis indicates that these meteorological factors might have played their roles individually.

Abstract
The Fe3O4/graphene oxide-supported 1,2-diaminocyclohexanetetraacetic acid composite (Fe3O4/GO/DCTA) was used as an adsorbent for Cu(II) removal. The effects of six organic acid ligands (formate, acetate, benzoate, oxalate, tartrate, and edetate) on the adsorption process were investigated in single- and multi-ligand systems. The results demonstrated that the adsorption processes were affected by solution pH and ionic strength. The experimental data of kinetics and isotherm followed the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. In the single-ligand systems, the presence of formate, acetate, and benzoate slightly altered the Cu(II) adsorption property, while the adsorption processes were significantly affected by the oxalate, tartrate, and edetate ligands. In the multi-ligand systems, the Cu(II) adsorption was influenced by the type and concentration of organic acid ligands. The sequence of the main effect was found to be: edetate>oxalate>benzoate>formate>tartrate>acetate, and the sequence of the two-factor interaction effect was found to be: AE (formate×tartrate)>BF (acetate×edetate)>AF (formate×edetate)>BD (acetate×oxalate)>AC (formate×benzoate)>AD (formate×oxalate)>AB (formate×acetate).

Abstract
It is important for China's green innovation productivity and sustainable development to study the effect of heterogeneous environmental regulation on microenterprise innovation activities. Based on the panel data of high-tech enterprises in China from 2012 to 2017, the article studies the incentive effect of heterogeneous environmental regulation on technological innovation and the mediation of innovation input and explores whether different types of environmental regulations have interactive effects on enterprise innovation. The results reveal that compared with the command-controlled environmental regulation, the incentive effect of market-incentive environmental regulation and voluntary environmental regulation on enterprise innovation is more significant, where the innovation input fully plays its role as a mediating effect. Further research finds that there is an interactive effect between command-controlled environmental regulation and other two regulatory tools, but no interactive effect between market-incentive environmental regulation and voluntary environmental regulation, which shows that the control-based regulatory tools and more flexible regulatory tools have a complementary effect on enterprise innovation. Through revealing the internal mechanism of environmental regulation on enterprise innovation, the article displays the process of technological innovation, and it also finds that flexible regulation tools and the combination of rigid and flexible tools are more conducive to encourage enterprises to carry out innovation activities.

Abstract
To improve the quality of the oil produced from microalgae, the co-pyrolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and Nannochloropsis sp. (NS) in a fixed bed reactor was investigated at different mixing ratios. Co-pyrolysis improved the gas yield, and the lower heating value of the gas products increased obviously with an increase in the LDPE amount. Furthermore, co-pyrolysis promoted the generation of CH4 and C2+, especially C2H4, with the maximum C2+ yield (84.86 mL/g) obtained with 75% LDPE. Meanwhile, the amounts of oxygenous and nitrogenous compounds in the liquid products decreased rapidly with LDPE addition. The aliphatic hydrocarbon content of the liquid products increased from 22.63% for NS pyrolysis to 77.4% with 25% LDPE. During co-pyrolysis with LDPE, O tended to evolve as H2O and CO (rather than as CO2 for NS pyrolysis) and N was more likely to be released into gas products, which enhanced the quality of the pyrolysis oil.

Abstract
Little is known about the interactive effects between biochar application and phosphorus (P) fertilization on plant growth and P uptake. For this purpose, five wheat straw biochars (produced at 25°C, 300°C, 400°C, 500°C and 600°C for 4h) with equal P (36mgkg(-1)) amount, with and without additional P fertilization (100mgkg(-1)) were applied in a pot experiment to investigate the growth of Suaeda salsa and their uptake of P from biochar and P fertilization amended saline sodic soil. Soil P fractions, dry matter yield, and plant P concentrations were determined after harvesting 90days. Our results confirmed that relatively lower pyrolysis temperature (<400°C) biochar retained P availability and increased plant growth. The plant P concentration was significantly correlated with NaHCO3-Pi (P<0.05), and NaOH-Pi (P<0.1) during early incubation time (4days) for biochar amended soil. As revealed by statistical analysis, a significant (P<0.05) negative (antagonistic) interaction occurred between biochar and P fertilization on the biomass production and plant P concentration. For plant biomass, the effects size of biochar (B), P, and their interaction followed the order of B×P (0.819)>B (0.569)≈P (0.568) based on the partial Eta squared values whereas the order changed as P (0.782)>B (0.562)>B×P (0.515) for plant P concentration. When biochar and P fertilization applied together, phosphate precipitation/sorption reaction occurred in saline sodic soil which explained the decreased plant P availability and plant yield in saline sodic soil. The negative interaction effects between biochar and P fertilization indicated limited utility value of biochar application in saline sodic soil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The few studies that examined the association between residential greenness and birth outcomes have produced inconsistent results, and the underlying mechanisms of these associations remain unclear. OBJECTIVES We examined the mediation and interaction effects of particulate matter (PM) air pollution on the relationship between greenness exposure during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy and birth outcomes, including preterm birth (PTB), term low birth weight (TLBW), small for gestational age (SGA), birth weight (BW), and head circumference (HC). METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study on 16,184 singleton live births between 2010 and 2012 in Taiwan. Residential greenness was estimated based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the PM information during the first and third trimesters was estimated through hybrid kriging land use regression and ordinary kriging interpolation methods. Multiple regression analyses were performed to evaluate the associations between greenness exposure and birth outcomes. We estimated the mediating effects of PM associated with greenness exposure on birth outcomes through causal mediation analyses. We also examined the potential multiplicative and additive interactions between greenness exposure and PM and their effects on birth outcomes. RESULTS The first trimester NDVI exposure was associated with reduced risks for PTB, TLBW, and SGA, which had an adjusted OR (aOR) of 0.93 (95% CI: 0.89-0.97), 0.91 (95% CI: 0.83-0.99), and 0.95 (95% CI: 0.91-1.00), respectively, per 0.1 unit increase in multi-pollutant models. The causal mediation analysis showed that PM mediated approximately 5-19% of the association between first and third trimester greenness and PTB and mediated approximately 15-37% of the association between greenness and SGA. We identified multiplicative interactions in log scale between first trimester PM10 and NDVI exposure for SGA (aORinteraction = 0.92, p = 0.03) and HC (estimateinteraction = 1.47, p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS This study revealed beneficial associations between residential greenness and birth outcomes, including PTB, TLBW, and SGA. The associations were partly mediated by a reduction in exposure to PM air pollution. SUMMARY The beneficial effects of greenness on PTB and SGA are partly mediated by a reduction in exposure to PM air pollution.

Abstract
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in improving plant tolerance and accumulation of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd). The growth, physiology and absorption of elements and transport in Phragmites australis (P. australis) were investigated under Zn and Cd stress to identify the transport mechanisms of toxic trace elements (TE) under the influence of AMF. Thus, AMF were observed to alleviate the toxic effects of Zn and Cd on P. australis by increasing plant biomass and through different regulatory patterns under different TE concentrations. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased under Zn stress, and the activities of SOD, catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and APX significantly increased under high concentrations of Cd. AMF differ in their strategies of regulating the transport of different metals under TE stress. Under Zn stress, the concentration of Zn in P. australis decreased by 10-57%, and the effect on Zn translocation factor (TFZn) was concentration-dependent. AMF increased the TFZn under low concentration stress, but decreased under high concentration stress. Under Cd stress, the concentration of Cd increased by as much as 17-40%, and the TFCd decreased. AMF were also found to change the interaction of Zn×Cd. In the absence of AMF, Cd exposure decreased the Zn concentrations in P. australis at Zn100 mg/L and Zn300 mg/L, while it increased the contents of Zn at Zn700 mg/L. The opposite trend was observed following treatment with AMF. However, regardless of the concentration of Cd, the addition of Zn decreased the concentration of Cd in both treatments in both the presence and absence of AMF. Under different TE stress conditions, the regulation of metal elements by AMF in host plants does not follow a single strategy but a trade-off between different trends of transportations. The findings of our study are important for applying AMF-P. australis systems in the phytoremediation of Zn-Cd co-contaminated ecosystems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although mounting evidence have linked traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) with increased risk of preterm birth (PTB), whether it can interact with indoor environmental factors remains unknown, and its window(s) susceptibility at the stage of gestation is unclear. OBJECTIVE To explore PTB risk for prenatal exposure to traffic-related air pollution and home environmental factors during pregnancy, so as to identify critical window(s) in the combined effect of traffic air pollution and main home environmental factor(s) on PTB development. METHODS A retrospective cohort study of 3,509 preschool children was performed in Changsha, China during 2011-2012. The PTB prevalence was reported by the parents based on a questionnaire. We estimated each mother's exposure to traffic-related air pollutant NO2 in different windows of gestation, including conception month, three trimesters, birth month, and whole gestation. Maternal exposure to home environmental factors was considered by renovation (new furniture/redecoration) in pregnancy, and mold/damp stains and window condensation during perinatal period. Associations of PTB with both ambient NO2 and home environmental factors, and their interactions on PTB were evaluated by logistic regression models using odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Traffic air pollutant NO2 exposure in utero was significantly associated with PTB, with adjusted odds ratio (OR) (95% CI) of 1.41 (1.00-1.98) for an IQR increase in NO2 exposure during whole pregnancy, particularly in the conception month and 1st trimester. We further found a positive relationship between perinatal exposure to mold/damp stains in the homes and PTB, OR (95% CI) = 1.73 (1.04-2.90). Especially, we detected a significant interaction between outdoor NO2 and indoor mold/damp stains on PTB risk. Male and female foetus were respectively more susceptible to perinatal mold/dampness at home and outdoor NO2 exposure in early gestation. CONCLUSION Our finding indicates that both outdoor traffic air pollutant and indoor mold/dampness play key roles in PTB development, and their interaction effect in early pregnancy significantly increases PTB risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although many studies have reported the mortality effect of temperature, there were few studies on the mortality risk of humidity, let alone the joint effect of temperature and humidity. This study aimed to investigate the joint and interaction effect of high temperature and relative humidity on mortality in China, which will deepen understanding the health risk of mixture climate exposure. METHODS The mortality and meteorological data were collected from 353 locations in China (2013-2017 in Jilin, Hunan, Guangdong and Yunnan provinces, 2009-2017 in Zhejiang province, and 2006-2011 in other Provinces). We defined location-specific daily mean temperature ≥ 75th percentile of distribution as high temperature, while minimum mortality relative humidity as the threshold of high relative humidity. A time-series model with a distributed lag non-linear model was first employed to estimate the location-specific associations between humid-hot events and mortality, then we conducted meta-analysis to pool the mortality effect of humid-hot events. Finally, an additive interaction model was used to examine the interactive effect between high temperature and relative humidity. RESULTS The excess rate (ER) of non-accidental mortality attributed to dry-hot events was 10.18% (95% confidence interval (CI): 8.93%, 11.45%), which was higher than that of wet-hot events (ER = 3.21%, 95% CI: 0.59%, 5.89%). The attributable fraction (AF) of mortality attributed to dry-hot events was 10.00% (95% CI: 9.50%, 10.72%) with higher burden for females, older people, central China, cardiovascular diseases and urban city. While for wet-hot events, AF was much lower (3.31%, 95% CI: 2.60%, 4.30%). We also found that high temperature and low relative humidity had synergistic additive interaction on mortality risk. CONCLUSION Dry-hot events may have a higher risk of mortality than wet-hot events, and the joint effect of high temperature and low relative humidity may be greater than the sum of their individual effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Daily air quality index (AQI) forecast can provide early warning information, and it is not clear whether it is appropriate for childhood asthma hospitalizations (CAHs). Furthermore, little is known about the effects of AQI on CAHs, as well as the interactions between temperature, humidity and AQI. METHODS We collected 32,238 cases in Hefei from 2013 to 2016 and estimated the association between daily CAHs and AQI by combining the Poisson Generalized Linear Models (PGLMs) with the Distributed Lag Nonlinear Models (DLNMs). The interaction between AQI and temperature was tested by stratifying AQI and temperature, as well as humidity. RESULTS AQI was associated with an increased risk of hospitalizations for childhood asthma. The adverse effect first appeared on the 3rd day, with the RR of 1.011 (95%CI: 1.000-1.023) and continued until the 19th day of lag (RR = 1.010, 95%CI: 1.001-1.020). In the subgroup analysis, the male and pre-school children were more sensitive to AQI, and there are seasonal differences in the effects of AQI on CAHs. Besides, in a stratified analysis with an AQI of 150, we found synergies between temperature, humidity and AQI. The interaction relative risk (IRR) and relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) for the interaction between temperature and AQI were 1.157 (95%CI: 1.029-1.306) and 0.122 (95%CI: 0.022-0.223) respectively. For the humidity, the IRR and RERI were 1.090 (95%CI: 1.056-1.206) and 0.083 (95%CI: 0.083-0.143) respectively. Exploring different subgroups in the interaction analyses, it was worth noting that female and pre-school children were more sensitive to the interaction between AQI and temperature, while school-age children were more sensitive to the interaction between AQI and humidity. CONCLUSIONS The study found that not only AQI can significantly increase the risk of CAHs, but also that under the context of climate change, temperature and humidity have a synergistic effect on AQI, suggesting that considering only the warning information of air pollution is not enough to strengthen the prevention of childhood asthma hospitalization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the interaction of depression and anxiety with the development of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). METHODS A nested case-control study involving 2558 participants was conducted with data from the prospective Miscarriage Woman Cohort study between 2017 and 2019 in the province of Gansu, China. The questionnaire data, self-rating anxiety scale and self-rating depression scale were collected after each participant's first miscarriage. Information on RPL outcomes was obtained from the medical records within the subsequent 2 years. All patients diagosed RPL were recruited as cases whilst a randomly selected group of women with only one miscarriage in the past were recruited as controls. The logistic regression and the interaction effects between anxiety and depression and RPL were analysed. RESULTS The prevalence of anxiety (n = 325, 28.7% vs. n = 278, 19.5%) and depression symptoms (n = 550, 48.6% vs. n = 589, 41.3%) for the 1132 RPL cases were higher than 1426 non-RPL controls (P < 0.001). After adjusting for possible confounding variables, the odds ratio (OR) value, reflecting the multiplicative interaction, was 1.91 (95% CI 1.50-2.44, P < 0.001) for cases with both anxiety and depression symptoms compared with the non-RPL group. The relative excess risk of interaction value, reflecting the additive interaction between anxiety and depression to RPL was 1.15 (95% CI 0.32-4.21). Moreover, the adjusted OR for RPL cases with mild anxiety and severe depression was 2.77 (95% CI 1.07-44.14, P < 0.001), for RPL cases with severe anxiety and mild depression was 4.23 (95% CI 1.01-22.21, P < 0.001), for RPL cases with severe anxiety and moderate depression was 4.34 (95% CI 1.03-21.28, P < 0.001) and for RPL cases with severe anxiety and severe depression was 5.95 (95% CI 1.09-45.09, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Either depression or anxiety alone could increase the risk of subsequent RPL. Anxiety and depression had a synergistic effect after the first miscarriage which increased the development of subsequent RPL disease.

Abstract
This study attempts to examine the main and interaction effects of roadway and weather conditions on crash incidence, using the comprehensive crash, traffic and weather data from the Kaiyang Freeway in China in 2014. The dependent variable is monthly crash count on a roadway segment (with homogeneous horizontal and vertical profiles). A Bayesian spatio-temporal model is proposed to measure the association between crash frequency and possible risk factors including traffic composition, presence of curve and slope, weather conditions, and their interactions. The proposed model can also accommodate the unstructured random effect, and spatio-temporal correlation and interactions. Results of parameter estimation indicate that the interactions between wind speed and slope, between precipitation and curve, and between visibility and slope are significantly correlated to the increase in the freeway crash risk, while the interaction between precipitation and slope is significantly correlated to the reduction in the freeway crash risk, respectively. These findings are indicative of the design and implementation of real-time traffic management and control measures, e.g. variable message sign, that could mitigate the crash risk under the adverse weather conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The risk of a child dying before reaching 5 years of age is highest in sub-Saharan African countries. But in Ethiopia, under-five mortality rates have shown a substantial decline. METHODS For this study, the Cox regression model for fixed and time-dependent explanatory variables was studied for under-five mortality in Ethiopia. We adapted survival analysis using the Cox regression model with 2011 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey data. RESULTS From the results, it was found that under-five children who live in Addis Ababa had a lower hazard (risk) of death (p value = 0.048). This could be as a result of higher health facilities and living standards in Addis Ababa, compared to other regions. Under-five children who lived in rural areas had a higher hazard (risk) of death compared to those living in urban areas. In addition, under-five children who lived in rural areas had 18% (p value = 0.01) more hazard (risk) of death than those living in urban areas. Furthermore, with older mothers, the chance of a child dying before reaching the age of 5 is lower. CONCLUSION The chances of a child dying before reaching the age of 5 are less if the mother does not become pregnant again before the child reaches the age of 5. Therefore, giving birth when older and not becoming pregnant again before the child reaches the age of 5 is one means of reducing under-five mortality.

Abstract
Foods generally contain special ingredients which easily to interact with drugs human intaking, thus affecting drug efficacy and excretion, and even cause adverse reactions. Vitamin C (Vit. C) is abundant in fresh fruits and vegetables. It plays a regulatory role in redox metabolism, and its absence can cause scurvy. Aspirin (ASP) can be used to treat many diseases, is the earliest, common and widely used as antipyretic, analgesic and antirheumatic medicine. Human serum albumin (HSA) is the most abundant protein in vertebrate plasma and has the property of combining and transporting endogenous and exogenous substances. In this paper, the effects of Vit. C on the combination of ASP and HSA were studied by multi-spectra and voltammetric approaches. Fluorescence spectra showed that the quenching mode between Vit. C and HSA is dynamic, and the main binding force is hydrophobic force. The quenching mode between ASP and HSA is static one, and the main binding force is hydrogen bond and van der Waals force. For ternary biological system of (HSA-ASP)-Vit. C, the binding constant decreases compared with HSA-Vit. C system. However, for (HSA-Vit. C)-ASP system, the binding constant does not change when compared with binary system of HSA-ASP. Based on the technology combination of voltammetry, infrared, three-dimensional fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD), it is proved that the existence of ASP will influence the binding process of Vit. C to HSA. It could be concluded that taking Vit. C first doesn't affect the absorption of ASP and may be good for health; in contrast, it is not good to take Vit. C immediately as one have just taken ASP, because the existence of ASP reduce the absorption of Vit. C for human body.

Abstract
Previous observational studies have shown that exposure to ambient temperature and air pollution were associated with the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, the susceptible time window of non-optimal temperature on GDM is still unknown, and the interaction with air pollution has not been examined. We conducted a prospective cohort study in Guangzhou, China to investigate the windows of susceptibility of temperature extremes and variability on the risk of GDM and to explore any interaction effect with air pollution. Daily maximum (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin) and diurnal temperature range (DTR) were obtained from Guangdong Meteorological Service. Distributed lag non-linear models with a logistic regression were applied to assess the effect of temperature extremes and DTR in different weeks of gestation on GDM. To examine the interaction effect, relative excess risk due to interaction index, attributable proportion and synergy index were calculated. There were 5,165 pregnant women enrolled, of which 604 were diagnosed with GDM (11.7%). Compared with a reference temperature (50th percentile of Tmax), we found that extreme high temperature (99th percentile of Tmax) exposure during 21st and 22nd gestational weeks was associated with an increased risk of GDM. Extreme low temperature (1st percentile of Tmax) exposure during 14th to 17th weeks increased the risk of GDM. We observed that per 1 °C increment of DTR during 21st to 24th weeks was associated with an elevated GDM risk. No interaction effect of temperature extremes or variability with air pollution on GDM were observed. Our results suggested that non-optimal temperature is an independent risk factor of GDM. The time window of susceptibility for extreme temperatures and DTR exposure on the risk of GDM generally occurred in second trimester of pregnancy. In the context of climate change, our study has important implications for reproductive health and justifies more research in different climate zones.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing evidence that allergic rhinitis (AR) is associated with indoor environmental factors, but their role in childhood AR during early life remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of preconceptional, prenatal, early postnatal, and current exposure to home environmental factors with childhood AR, and to further explore whether this association can be interacted by outdoor air pollution and temperature. METHODS A retrospective cohort study of 8689 preschool children was conducted during 2019-2020 in Changsha, China. A standard questionnaire was used to collect data on each family's health outcomes and home environments. We considered home environmental exposures during one year before conception, pregnancy, first year of life, and past year. Associations of indoor air pollution and allergens with AR were assessed by multiple logistic regression models. RESULTS Pre-birth exposure to indoor air pollution emitted by new furniture or redecoration and dampness related allergen derived from mold/damp stains and mold/damp clothes or bedding during 1 year before conception and pregnancy was significantly associated with increased AR, with adjusted ORs (95% CI) ranging from 1.35 (1.05-1.75) to 1.87 (1.55-2.27). Childhood AR was also significantly related with post-birth exposure to dampness related indoor allergen including mold/damp stains and mold/damp clothes or bedding in first year and past year and pollen allergen including total and nonflowing plants in past year, with a range of ORs (95% CI) from 1.20 (1.01-1.42) to 1.79 (1.42-2.27). We identified that pre-birth, particularly in utero exposure to both indoor air pollution from renovation and dampness related allergens, played a key role in AR development compared to post-birth exposures, and accumulative effect was observed with the highest risk of AR. High exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) including outdoor PM2.5, NO2, CO, and O3, as well as living near traffic road not only significantly increased adverse effect of home environmental factors but also decreased protective effect of household dogs on childhood AR. Early life exposure to low temperature in pregnancy and high temperature in first year significantly increased AR risk of home environmental exposure. Sensitivity analysis indicated that some sub-groups were more susceptible to AR risk of home environmental exposure. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that pre-birth exposure to home environmental factors played an important role in AR development and this effect can be interacted by TRAP and temperature, which supports a hypothesis of "(pre)fetal origin of childhood AR".

Abstract
An association of influenza-like illness (ILI) with outdoor air pollution has been reported. However, the effect of indoor air pollution on ILI was rarely investigated. We aimed to determine an association of indoor air pollution from coal combustion (IAPCC) and lifestyle with ILI risk in housewives, and the modification effect of phase II metabolic enzyme genes. We recruited 403 housewives for a cross-sectional study in Shanxi Province, China, including 135 with ILI frequency (≥1 time per year in the past ten years) as the case group and 268 with ILI frequency (<1 times per year) as the control group. Information on their energy usage characteristics and lifestyle was collected by questionnaires, as well as the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of epoxide hydrolase 1 (rs1051740 and rs2234922), N-acetyltransferase 2 (rs1041983), and glutathione S-transferase (rs1695). We used exposure index to indicate the level of IAPCC among housewives. Our results revealed that the exposure index was positively correlated with ILI frequency. A significant dose-response trend between the exposure index and ILI risk was found with or without adjusting for confounders. Cooking frequency in kitchen with coal as primary fuel and ventilation frequency in the living room or bedroom with a coal-fueled stove for heating during the heating season were two important risk factors to affect ILI frequency. Only rs1051740 was found to be associated with exposure index, whereas it didn't have interaction effect with exposure index on ILI frequency. In conclusion, IAPCC and SNPs of rs1051740 were both associated with ILI frequency.

Abstract
Community collectivization is an integral part of condom use and HIV risk reduction interventions among key population. This study assesses community collectivization among female sex workers (FSWs), and explores its relationship with sex workers' consistent condom use (CCU) with different partners considering the interaction effect of time and collectivization. Data were drawn from two rounds of cross-sectional surveys collected during 2010 (N1 = 1986) and 2012 (N2 = 1973) among FSWs in Andhra Pradesh, India. Results of the multiple logistic regression analysis show that, CCU with regular and occasional clients increased over the inter-survey period among FSWs with a high collective efficacy (AOR 2.9 and 6.1) and collective agency (AOR 14.4 and 19.0) respectively. The association of high levels of collectivization with CCU and self-efficacy for condom use are central to improve the usefulness and sustainability of HIV prevention programs worldwide.

Abstract
Arsenic (As) and fluoride (F) are two common groundwater toxicants. The toxicity of As is closely related to As metabolism, and several biological and environmental factors have been associated with As modification. However, limited information about the effect of F exposure on the modification of the As metabolism profile has been described. The aim of this study was to assess the interaction effect of AsF coexposure on the As metabolism profile in an adult population environmentally exposed to low-moderate As levels. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 236 adults from three Mexican communities. F and As concentrations were quantified in water samples. The concentrations of urinary F and As species [inorganic arsenic (iAs), monomethylated arsenic (MAs) and dimethylated arsenic (DMAs)] were also determined and used as exposure biomarkers. As species percentages and methylation indices were estimated to evaluate the As methylation profile. Our results showed a relationship between the water and urine concentrations of both contaminants and, a significant correlation between the As and F concentrations in water and urine samples. A statistically significant interaction of F and As exposure on the increase in MAs% (β = 0.16, p = 0.018) and the decrease in DMAs% (β = -0.3, p = 0.034), PMI (β = -0.07, p = 0.052) and SMI (β = -0.13, p = 0.097) was observed. These findings indicate that drinking water is the main source of AsF coexposure and suggest that F exposure decreases As methylation capacity. However, additional large and prospective studies are required to confirm our findings, and to elucidate the involved mechanisms of interaction and their implications in adverse health effects.
