Validating the GCP data hypothesis using internet search data

The Global Consciousness Project (GCP) operates under the hypothesis that events that elicit widespread emotion or draw the simultaneous attention of a large number of people could affect the output of hardware-generated random numbers. The hypothesis thus suggests that the mind, in some sense, can interact with matter at a distance, a controversial suggestion because such a mechanism could challenge some current understandings. Testing the validity of the hypothesis thus carries substantial merit as negative results would reinforce already established scientific perceptions, whereas positive results would point in the direction of a needed update. In this paper, it is hypothesized that events inflicting a strong emotional response should also trigger the need for information. As such, global internet search trends should correlate with the GCP data, allowing for the hypothesis to be objectively tested. In practice, Google Trends search data is used to construct several search indexes that are correlated with GCP data aggregates using time series statistics. It is found that the GCP data significantly correlates with the indexes and can be used to improve the statistical model's in-sample fit. Furthermore, it is found that out-of-sample forecasts can be made more accurate if the GCP data is used. The results thus point toward the validity of the GCP data hypothesis and that the data produced by the GCP can be put to practical use by, for example, forecasters.

Internet search by the patients undergoing hernia surgery about the disease and surgeon selection

AIM

To find out the current status of the internet use of patients who undergo surgery for repair of their hernias.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The patients who were diagnosed with abdominal wall hernia and scheduled for elective hernia repair were requested to answer a questionnaire. The questions were directed face-to-face by the surgeons themselves. The age, gender, education status, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status, place of living, health insurance, access to the Internet, surgical method, the person who did the search, previous hernia surgery, recurrence of previous hernia surgery, surgery other than hernia, and the hernia type were the recorded parameters at the first stage. Then, the answers for three main questions were taken: "Did you make a search about your hernia?", "Did you make a search about your surgeon?", "Would you prefer another surgeon if you could?"

RESULTS

A total of 200 patients were included in the study (146 male/54 female). 55.5% of the patients made an Internet search about their hernias. 58.5% of the patients made a search to find a proper surgeon. 12.5% of the patients stated that they would like to go to another surgeon for the hernia repair if it was possible. Internet search rate was significantly higher in younger patients in comparison with older patients. The higher the education level of the patients, the higher the rate of making Internet searches about the hernias and surgeons. Patients who live in the cities more frequently made Internet searches in comparison with those living in towns or villages. Internet searches about the hernias were similar in patients who had a history of hernia surgery (n = 23, 52%), and were even operated for recurrence of the same hernia (n = 30, 60%), compared to other patients (p = 0.569). Similarly, the rates of conducting surgeon research of the patients in these two groups (66.7%, 56.5%, respectively) were statistically similar (p = 0.450). The effect of ASA classification of patients on the Internet researches conducted about the disease and about the surgeons was not statistically significant (p = 0.799, p = 0.388, respectively). It was found that the rates of researching about the disease and about the surgeon on the Internet were significantly higher in patients who had undergone a minimally invasive surgery (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Less than two-thirds of the hernia patients make Internet search about their disease. Higher education level, younger age, patient's preference for minimally invasive surgery and living in a city positively affect Internet search rates.

Understanding the role of religion in shaping cross-national and domestic attitudes and interest in abortion, homosexuality, and pornography using traditional and Google search data

Over the last 20 years, internet usage has increased substantially, providing an inexpensive source of data that may be less prone to bias and could provide a greater number of meso and macro units. However, validating big data and their usefulness has been challenging. This study uses established sources to validate Google Trends' search interest in the "Bible" across US Designated Market Areas and "Ramadan" across nations, establishing a potential new source of religion data. We then use these measures to show that people from religiously conservative US areas and countries are more likely to disapprove of homosexuality, abortion and pornography. Conversely, Americans from conservative religious areas are also more likely to search for these topics; and cross-national interest in Islam is associated with increased interest in pornography. Our study offers insight into Google Trends' potential for social science research and a roadmap on how to use these data.

The de-alzheimerisation of dementia? An analysis of internet searches

PURPOSE

Alzheimer's disease is often seen by the public as synonymous with dementia but this may have changed in recent years.

METHODS

We used Google Trends to examine the relative volume of internet searches from 2004 to July 2017 for the terms 'dementia' and 'Alzheimer' in English-speaking countries. For each country, a linear regression model was fitted for each search term and the slopes of the lines were compared.

RESULTS

The slopes (standard error) for 'dementia' and 'Alzheimer', respectively, were: Australia-0.26 (0.02) and - 001 (0.002); Canada-0.23 (0.01) and 0.004 (0.01); Ireland: 0.33 (0.02) and - 0.04 (0.01); United Kingdom-0.36 (0.01) and 0.01 (0.001); and United States-0.23 (0.01) and - 0.01 (0.004). Differences between slopes were all significant at p < 0.001.

CONCLUSIONS

In all countries, there was a large increase over time in relative search volumes for 'dementia' and a flat or negative trend in searches for 'Alzheimer'.

Evidence From Web-Based Dietary Search Patterns to the Role of B12 Deficiency in Non-Specific Chronic Pain: A Large-Scale Observational Study

Background

Profound vitamin B12 deficiency is a known cause of disease, but the role of low or intermediate levels of B12 in the development of neuropathy and other neuropsychiatric symptoms, as well as the relationship between eating meat and B12 levels, is unclear.

Objective

The objective of our study was to investigate the role of low or intermediate levels of B12 in the development of neuropathy and other neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Methods

We used food-related Internet search patterns from a sample of 8.5 million people based in the US as a proxy for B12 intake and correlated these searches with Internet searches related to possible effects of B12 deficiency.

Results

Food-related search patterns were highly correlated with known consumption and food-related searches (ρ=.69). Awareness of B12 deficiency was associated with a higher consumption of B12-rich foods and with queries for B12 supplements. Searches for terms related to neurological disorders were correlated with searches for B12-poor foods, in contrast with control terms. Popular medicines, those having fewer indications, and those which are predominantly used to treat pain, were more strongly correlated with the ability to predict neuropathic pain queries using the B12 contents of food.

Conclusions

Our findings show that Internet search patterns are a useful way of investigating health questions in large populations, and suggest that low B12 intake may be associated with a broader spectrum of neurological disorders than previously thought.
