Psychometric assessment of the Persian version of the protective factors of resilience scale (PFRS)

BACKGROUND

Resilience is defined as an individual's ability to recover from difficulties and overcome challenges and adversity. Recognizing and measuring internal and external protective factors have been identified as important processes for building resilience, yet to date, no valid, and reliable scales of resilience in the Persian language have been developed that recognize both internal and external protective factors.

METHODS

The present study was to translate the protective factors of resilience scale (PFRS) from English to Persian and analyze its psychometric properties among Iranians. Convenience sampling was used to gather data from January 2021 to February 2021 through digital internet scales, and 6 scales, including PFRS, Ryff's psychological well-being scale, Rosenberg self-esteem scale, life orientation test-revised, positive and negative affect schedule, and short version of resilience scale (RS), were completed by 265 participants aged from 15 to 56. So, the aim of this study is to investigate the psychometric properties of protective factors of resilience scale among Iranians.

RESULTS

The results of the face, content, and construct validity revealed that the Persian version of the PFRS measure had acceptable validity and reliability. The Cronbach alpha for the whole scale was 0.88, and the value of the content validity index was above 0.7. A confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the three-factor structure model of the scale (fit indices: CMIN/df = 2.51, p < .01; comparative fit index = 0.94, goodness of fit index = 0.90, root mean squared error of approximation = 0.07).

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the Persian version of the protective factors of resilience is a reliable and valid measurement to assess the protective factors and internal and external protective factors of resilience in Iranians.

Dietary patterns derived using principal component analysis and associations with sociodemographic characteristics and overweight and obesity: A cross-sectional analysis of Iranian adults

Introduction

This study examined the cross-sectional association between household dietary patterns and sociodemographic characteristics and BMI in a nationally representative sample of Iranian adults.

Methods

Data on 6,833 households (n = 17,824 adults) from the National Comprehensive Study on Household Food Consumption Pattern and Nutritional Status 2001-2003 were used. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to extract dietary patterns from three household 24-h dietary recalls. Linear regression analyses were used to examine associations between dietary patterns and sociodemographic characteristics and BMI.

Results

Three dietary patterns were identified: the first was characterized by high citrus fruit intake, the second by high hydrogenated fats intake and the third by high non-leafy vegetables intake. The first and third patterns were associated with household heads with higher education and living in urban areas, while the second was associated with household heads with lower education and living in rural areas. All dietary patterns were positively associated with BMI. The strongest association was found with the first dietary pattern (β: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.55).

Discussion

While all three dietary patterns were positively associated with BMI, the sociodemographic characteristics of Iranian adults who consumed them differed. These findings inform the design of population-level dietary interventions to address rising obesity rates in Iran.

HLA genetic study in Iran Saqqez-Baneh Kurds: no genetic trace of Aryan invasions in Anatolian Turks and Kurds is found

Kurds are living at Middle East region comprising several countries (38 million people) and also have emigrated to Asia, Europe and America. Kurds from Iran have been HLA typed in the present work from Saqqez and Baneh towns, Kordestan province, Iran. Origin of Kurds is considered autochthonous from Anatolia and surrounding mountains :they have been referred as "the mountain people" by classic Persian, Greek and Roman authors. Present day Turks are also autochthonous from Anatolia, but they were not recognized by classical authors as living in the mountains and they speak a language of Asian origin that was imposed to Anatolia by a "elite" invasion without a noticeable high Asian gene input. Most frequent class I and class II HLA alleles found in Iranian Kurds population are: HLA-A*24:02, A*02:01 and HLA-B*35:01, and HLA-DRB1*11:01, DRB1*03:02 and HLA-DQB1*03:01; also, most frequent HLA extended haplotypes from this Iran Kurdish sample are not shared with Iranians but with Mediterranean, Turkish and Caucasus people. This is confirmed by Neighbour-Joining and correspondence analysis studied together with the corresponding populations. Finally, our studies show that both Kurds and Turks are genetically original from Anatolian Peninsula and surrounding countries and that an apparent Asian genetic or Aryan invasion does not exist in the area.

Dietary and Lifestyle Inflammation Scores Are Inversely Associated with Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease among Iranian Adults: A Nested Case-Control Study

BACKGROUND

Diet and lifestyle may affect risk for metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) by chronically elevating systemic inflammation.

OBJECTIVES

In this study we investigated the separate and joint associations of dietary and lifestyle inflammation scores (DIS and LIS, respectively) with MAFLD risk.

METHODS

For this nested case-control study we identified and recruited 968 patients with MAFLD (defined as having a fatty liver index ≥60 plus ≥1 of the following conditions: overweight or obese, type II diabetes mellitus, evidence of metabolic dysregulation) and 964 controls from among 35-70-y-old men and women in the baseline phase of the Sabzevar Persian Cohort Study. We collected demographic, lifestyle, anthropometric, biochemical, and dietary intake information (via a validated FFQ) from which we calculated a circulating inflammation biomarker-weighted, predominantly whole foods and beverages-based, 19-component DIS and a 3-component LIS. We estimated DIS- and LIS-MAFLD associations using multivariable unconditional logistic regression. We also calculated equal-weight DIS and LIS to capture all potential mechanisms (inflammation plus other mechanisms) for associations of diet and lifestyle with MAFLD risk.

RESULTS

Among those in the highest relative to the lowest DIS and LIS tertiles, the multivariable-adjusted ORs and their 95% CIs were OR: 1.84; 95% CI: 1.61, 2.07; Ptrend < 0.001, and OR: 1.96; 95% CI: 1.69, 2.21; Ptrend < 0.001, respectively. For those in the highest relative to the lowest joint DIS and LIS tertile, the values were OR: 2.56; 95% CI: 2.19, 2.93; Pinteraction < 0.001. The findings were similar by sex. The third tertile values for the equal-weight DIS- and LIS-MAFLD associations were OR: 1.87; 95% CI: 1.41, 2.34; and OR: 2.16; 95% CI: 1.85, 2.46, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that higher balances of pro- relative to anti-inflammatory dietary and lifestyle exposures, separately and especially jointly, may be associated with higher MAFLD risk among adults. Also, inflammation may be the primary mechanism through which diet affects MAFLD risk.

Predictors of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in adults: a population-based study in Northeastern Iran

AIM

This study aimed to identify the risk factors of metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) among adults in northeastern Iran.

BACKGROUND

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease and hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome that threatens global public health. Recently, MAFLD has been proposed as a new terminology updated from NAFLD and diagnosed based on modified criteria.

METHODS

A nested case-control study was performed on the participants of the first phase of the Persian Sabzevar Cohort Study (PSCS), a survey that was conducted in northeastern Iran and enrolled 4,242 participants aged 35-70 years. In total, 968 MAFLD cases and 964 controls adjusted for age and sex were recruited. Data including demographic, lifestyle, anthropometric, biochemical, sleep pattern, and dietary intake information was collected.

RESULTS

The mean (SD [standard deviation]) age of participants was 49.2 (8.8) years, and 39.9% of the participants were males. The prevalence of MAFLD was 22.8% (95% CI [confidence interval] 19.2 - 26.3%). Increased body mass index (BMI) (OR [odds ratios] 5.51, 95% CI 2.73 - 11.10), waist circumference (WC) (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.44 - 2.38), blood concentrations of triglycerides (TG) (OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06 - 1.15), total cholesterol (TC) (OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.003 - 1.04), and alanine aminotransferase (AST) (OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.05 - 1.16) were significantly associated with an increased risk of the MAFLD (p-value <0.05). Furthermore, the odds of MAFLD risk was 43% higher in subjects who slept ≤ 5 hrs/day than those with ≥ 7 hrs per day of sleep (OR 1.43; 95% CI 1.07 - 1.92, p-value = 0.01).

CONCLUSION

In this study, it was found that MAFLD was best predicted by BMI, WC, and serum levels of TG, total cholesterol, and AST. Sleeping ≤ 5hrs/day compared to ≥ 7hrs/day was associated with an increased risk of MAFLD.

Comparison of Nasal Index Between Northwestern Nigeria and Northern Iranian Populations: An Anthropometric Study

Purpose

The nasal index has a great value in anthropological studies, because it is one of the anthropometric indices acknowledged in nasal surgery as well as management. Anthropometric studies are very important area for craniofacial surgery and syndromology. The aim of this research was to compare the nasal characteristics between northwestern Nigerian and Iranian populations and compare them with other studies.

Methods

The nasal breadths and heights were measured from 400 individuals with 200 participants from Hausa ethnic group of northwestern Nigeria and 200 participants from Northern Tehran, Iran. Nasal index (NI) was calculated and analyzed statistically.

Results

There were significant difference in the nasal breadth (P = 0.0001), height (P = 0.0001) and NI (P = 0.0001) of sex groups in both Iranian and Nigeria population. The distribution of the nasal shapes for Iranian population is 127 leptorrhine (31.9%), 62 mesorrhine (15.6%) and nine platyrrhine (2.3%), while Nigeria population has 120 mesorrhine (30.2%), 75 leptorrhine (18.8%) and five platyrrhine (1.3%). This shows that Nigeria Hausa population has predominantly mesorrhine nose shape, while Northern Iranians are leptorrhine.

Conclusion

The NI of males is higher than females in both population and this study can be of clinical and surgical interest in Rhinology. We recommend further studies to compare the NI of Nigeria and Iranian population of different ethnic groups and with other countries.

Mitochondrial DNA variation, genetic structure and demographic history of Iranian populations

In order to survey the evolutionary history and impact of historical events on the genetic structure of Iranian people, the HV2 region of 141 mtDNA sequences related to six Iranian populations were analyzed. Slight and non-significant F_ST distances among the Central-western Persian speaking populations of Iran testify to the common origin of these populations from one proto-population. Mismatch distribution suggests that this proto-Iranian population started to colonize Iran about 30000 years ago which is almost consistent with the timing of arrival and colonization of western Asia by the anatomically modern human. Star-like haplotype network structures, significant and negative Tajima's D (D=-2.08, P<0.05) and unimodal mismatch distributions support the genetic effects of this expansion. Iranian populations presented mtDNA lineages that clearly belong to the European gene pool (i.e. H and U), while the Mashhad population was characterized by the presence of eastern and central Asian mtDNA lineages (i.e. M, B and D). Furthermore, the low diversity (h=0.428) observed in Mashhad may indicated the presence of inbreeding, drift or bottleneck events. The application of Monmonier's maximum differences algorithm revealed a geographic zone of genetic discontinuity between the Arab people of Khuzestan and rest of Iranian populations. Geographical factors, in cooperation with cultural/linguistic differences, are the main reasons for this differentiation. The lack of a sharp geographical or ethno-linguistic structure for mtDNA HV2 sequence diversity was statistically supported by AMOVA and Mantel (r=0.19, P<0.05) tests.

Quality characteristics and consumer acceptance of a high fish protein puffed corn-fish snack

Corn snack fortified with 7% fish protein powder made from saithe (Pollachius Virens) surimi was selected by expert panel from industry for consumer studies in Iran and Iceland. They hedonically screened products with 3%, 5%, 7% and 9% fish protein powder. Snack containing 9% fish protein powder (FP) had significantly lower liking for odour, texture, flavour, and overall acceptability than the other three prototypes. Snacks fortified with 3%, 5%, and 7% FP had similar sensory attributes. Therefore, snack with the highest level of FP (7%) was selected for acceptance tests. It was seasoned with cheese powder, vegetable oil, salt, and colorant. The amount of protein, moisture, fat, ash and salt in fortified corn snack (FCS) was 12%, 2%, 31%, 3%, and 2% respectively. Consumers' acceptance was studied using a central location test method. Consumers were 6-16 years old children in two communities (Iceland and Iran). They liked FCS but Iranian children favoured it more than Icelandic children. Majority of parents of the participants expressed their willingness to choose this product when buying snacks.
