Signatures of quantum phases in a dissipative system

Lindbladian formalism, as tuned to dissipative and open systems, has been all-pervasive to interpret non-equilibrium steady states of quantum many-body systems. We study the fate of free fermionic and superconducting phases in a dissipative one-dimensional Kitaev model-where the bath acts both as a source and a sink of fermionic particles with different coupling rates. As a function of these two couplings, we investigate the steady state, its entanglement content, and its approach from varying initial states. Interestingly, we find that the steady state phase diagram retains decipherable signatures of ground state critical physics. We also show that early-time fidelity is a useful marker to find a subclass of phase transitions in such situations. Moreover, we show that the survival of critical signatures at late-times, strongly depend on the thermal nature of the steady state. This connection hints at a correspondence between quantum observables and classical magnetism in the steady state of such systems. Our work uncovers interesting connections between dissipative quantum many-body systems, thermalization of a classical spin and many-body quantum critical phenomena.

Electrical, thermal and thermoelectric transport in open long-range Kitaev chain

We study electrical, thermal and thermoelectric transport in a hybrid device consisting of a long-range Kitaev (LRK) chain coupled to two metallic leads at two ends. Electrical and thermal currents are calculated in this device under both voltage and thermal bias conditions. We find that the transport characteristics of the LRK chain are distinguishably different from its short-range counterpart, which is well known for hosting zero energy Majorana edge modes under some specific range of values of the model parameters. The emergence of massive Dirac fermions, the absence of gap closing at the topological phase transition point and some special features of the energy spectrum which are unique to the LRK chain, significantly alter electrical/thermal current vs. voltage/temperature bias characteristics in comparison with that of the short-range Kitaev chain. These novel transport characteristics of the LRK model can be helpful in understanding nontrivial topological phases of the LRK chain.

Manifestation of Majorana modes overlap in the Aharonov-Bohm effect

One of the key features of the Majorana bound states emerging in topological superconducting (SC) wires is increasing oscillations of their energy under the growth of magnetic field or chemical potential due to concomitant enhancement of hybridization of the Majorana mode wave functions initially localized at the opposite edges of the structure. In this study we found that the other consequence of it is a shift of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations of linear-response conductance in an interference device where two ends of the SC wire connected with a normal contact via non-SC wires (arms). In addition, it is accompanied by an oscillation period doubling. The numerical calculations for the spinful system are supported by the analytical results for different spinless models allowing to track the conductance evolution as the hybridization of the Majorana modes increases. It is shown that since the coupling between the different arms and normal contact is implemented only via the different-type Majoranas the AB oscillations acquire a fundamentalπ/2 shift in comparison with the effect for an analogous system of zero-energy quantum dots.

Driven quantum many-body systems and out-of-equilibrium topology

In this review we present some of the work done in India in the area of driven and out-of-equilibrium systems with topological phases. After presenting some well-known examples of topological systems in one and two dimensions, we discuss the effects of periodic driving in some of them. We discuss the unitary as well as the non-unitary dynamical preparation of topologically non-trivial states in one and two dimensional systems. We then discuss the effects of Majorana end modes on transport through a Kitaev chain and a junction of three Kitaev chains. Following this, transport through the surface states of a three-dimensional topological insulator has also been reviewed. The effects of hybridization between the top and bottom surfaces in such systems and the application of electromagnetic radiation on a strip-like region on the top surface are described. Two unusual topological systems are mentioned briefly, namely, a spin system on a kagome lattice and a Josephson junction of three superconducting wires. We have also included a pedagogical discussion on topology and topological invariants in the appendices, where the connection between topological properties and the intrinsic geometry of many-body quantum states is also elucidated.

Exact eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the finite Kitaev chain and its topological properties

We present a comprehensive, analytical treatment of the finite Kitaev chain for arbitrary chemical potential and chain length. By means of an exact analytical diagonalization in the real space, we derive the momentum quantization conditions and present exact analytical formulas for the resulting energy spectrum and eigenstate wave functions, encompassing boundary and bulk states. In accordance with an analysis based on the winding number topological invariant, and as expected from the bulk-edge correspondence, the boundary states are topological in nature. They can have zero, exponentially small or even finite energy. Further, for a fixed value of the chemical potential, their properties are ruled by the ratio of the decay length to the chain length. A numerical analysis confirms the robustness of the topological states against disorder.

Geometric phases for mixed states of the Kitaev chain

The Berry phase has found applications in building topological order parameters for certain condensed matter systems. The question whether some geometric phase for mixed states can serve the same purpose has been raised, and proposals are on the table. We analyse the intricate behaviour of Uhlmann's geometric phase in the Kitaev chain at finite temperature, and then argue that it captures quite different physics from that intended. We also analyse the behaviour of a geometric phase introduced in the context of interferometry. For the Kitaev chain, this phase closely mirrors that of the Berry phase, and we argue that it merits further investigation.
