Homogeneous Catalytic Process of a Heterogeneous Ru Catalyst in Li-O2 via X-ray Nanodiffraction Observation

In recent years, lithium oxygen batteries (Li-O2) have received considerable research attention due to their extremely high energy density. However, the poor conductivity and ion conductivity of the discharge product lithium peroxide (Li2O2) result in a high charging overpotential, poor cycling stability, and low charging rate. Therefore, studying and improving catalysts is a top priority. This study focuses on the commonly used heterogeneous catalyst ruthenium (Ru). The local distribution of this catalyst is controlled by using sputtering technology. Moreover, X-ray nanodiffraction is applied to observe the relationship between the decomposition of Li2O2 and the local distribution of Ru. Results show that Li2O2 decomposes homogeneously in liquid systems and heterogeneously in solid-state systems. This study finds that the catalytic effect of Ru is related to electrolyte decomposition and that its soluble byproducts act as electron acceptors or redox mediators, effectively reducing charging overpotential but also shortening the cycle life.

Preparation and Properties of Gel Polymer Electrolytes with Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 and Li6.46La3Zr1.46Ta0.54O12 by UV Curing Process

Poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are considered a promising electrolyte candidate for polymer lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their free-standing shape, versatility, security, flexibility, lightweight, reliability, and so on. However, due to problems such as low ionic conductivity, PVDF-HFP can only be used on a small scale when used as a substrate alone. To overcome the above shortcomings, GPEs were designed and synthesized by a UV curing process by adding NASICON-type Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) and garnet-type Li6.46La3Zr1.46Ta0.54O12 (LLZTO) to PVDF-HFP. Experimentally, GPEs with 10% weight LLZTO in a PVDF-HFP matrix had an ionic conductivity of up to 3 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C. When assembled into LiFePO4/GPEs/Li batteries, a discharge-specific capacity of 81.5 mAh g-1 at a current density of 1 C and a capacity retention rate of 98.1% after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C occurred. Therefore, GPEs added to LLZTO have a broad application prospect regarding rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

An Asymmetric Cross-Linked Ionic Copolymer Hybrid Solid Electrolyte with Super Stretchability for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Composite solid electrolytes are recommended to be the most promissing strategy for solid-state batteries because they combine the advantages of inorganic ceramics and polymers. However, the huge interfacial resistance between the inorganic ceramic and polymer results in low ionic conductivity, which is still the major impediment that limits their applications. Herein, a novel highly elastic and weakly coordinated ionic copolymer hybrid electrolyte with asymmetric structure based on surface-modified Li_1.5 Al_0.5 Ge_1.5 (PO₄ )₃ by "in situ" polymerization is proposed to improve ionic conductivity and mechanical properties simultaneously. The all-solid hybrids electrolytes exhibit room-temperature ionic conductivity up to 2.61 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 and lithium-ion transference number of 0.41. The hybrids electrolytes can be repeatedly stretching-releasing-stretching, showing a super stretchability with the elongation at break up to 496%. The Li symmetrical cells assembled with the hybrid electrolytes can continuously operate for 800 h at 0.1 mA cm^-2 without discernable dendrites, indicating good interfacial compatibility between the hybrid electrolytes and lithium electrodes. The Li|LiFePO₄ batteries assembled with the hybrid electrolytes deliver an initial discharge specific capacity of 165.5 mAh g^-1 with an initial coulombic efficiency of 94.8% and 154 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 C, and maintain 95.4% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.5 C.

Matchmaker of Marriage between a Li Metal Anode and NASICON-Structured Solid-State Electrolyte: Plastic Crystal Electrolyte and Three-Dimensional Host Structure

The marriage between a Li metal anode and the solid-state electrolyte is expected to limit the safety risk of secondary batteries. However, dendrites and interfacial stability hinder the combination of Li metal anode and solid-state electrolyte. Herein, a plastic crystal electrolyte (PCE) and three-dimensional (3D) host structure played the role of a matchmaker in combining the solid-state electrolyte and Li metal anode. Succinonitrile cooperated with Li salt and Li_6.4La₃Zr_1.4Ta_0.6O₁₂ nanosize powder and built a PCE interphase, which enhanced the interfacial stability between Li_1.5Al_0.5Ge_1.5(PO₄)₃ and Li metal anode. To protect the soft PCE from the dendrite penetration, commercially sold Super P, carbon nanotube, KS6, and Ketjen black were co-heated with the melted Li metal. However, only KS6 built a 3D host in Li metal successfully because of its high graphitization and layered structure. Benefitting from the matchmakers, the solid-state batteries exhibited enhanced cycling stability.

Microwave Crystallization of Lithium Aluminum Germanium Phosphate Solid-State Electrolyte

Lithium aluminum germanium phosphate (LAGP) glass-ceramics are considered as promising solid-state electrolytes for Li-ion batteries. LAGP glass was prepared via the regular conventional melt-quenching method. Thermal, chemical analyses and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed to characterize the prepared glass. The crystallization of the prepared LAGP glass was done using conventional heating and high frequency microwave (MW) processing. Thirty GHz microwave (MW) processing setup were used to convert the prepared LAGP glass into glass-ceramics and compared with the conventionally crystallized LAGP glass-ceramics that were heat-treated in an electric conventional furnace. The ionic conductivities of the LAGP samples obtained from the two different routes were measured using impedance spectroscopy. These samples were also characterized using XRD and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microwave processing was successfully used to crystallize LAGP glass into glass-ceramic without the aid of susceptors. The MW treated sample showed higher total, grains and grain boundary ionic conductivities values, lower activation energy and relatively larger-grained microstructure with less porosity compared to the corresponding conventionally treated sample at the same optimized heat-treatment conditions. The enhanced total, grains and grain boundary ionic conductivities values along with the reduced activation energy that were observed in the MW treated sample was considered as an experimental evidence for the existence of the microwave effect in LAGP crystallization process. MW processing is a promising candidate technology for the production of solid-state electrolytes for Li-ion battery.
