Laser induced spherical bubble dynamics in partially confined geometry with acoustic feedback from container walls

We investigated laser-induced cavitation dynamics in a small container with elastic thin walls and free or partially confined surface both experimentally and by numerical investigations. The cuvette was only 8-25 times larger than the bubble in its center. The liquid surface was either free, or two thirds were confined by a piston-shaped pressure transducer. Different degrees of confinement were realized by filling the liquid up to the transducer surface or to the top of the cuvette. For reference, some experiments were performed in free liquid. We recorded the bubble dynamics simultaneously by high-speed photography, acoustic measurements, and detection of probe beam scattering. Simultaneous single-shot recording of radius-time curves and oscillation times enabled to perform detailed investigations of the bubble dynamics as a function of bubble size, acoustic feedback from the elastic walls, and degree of surface confinement. The bubble dynamics was numerically simulated using a Rayleigh-Plesset model extended by terms describing the acoustically mediated feedback from the bubble's environment. Bubble oscillations were approximately spherical as long as no secondary cavitation by tensile stress occurred. Bubble expansion was always similar to the dynamics in free liquid, and the environment influenced mainly the collapse phase and subsequent oscillations. For large bubbles, strong confinement led to a slight reduction of maximum bubble size and to a pronounced reduction of the oscillation time, and both effects increased with bubble size. The joint action of breakdown-induced shock wave and bubble expansion excites cuvette wall vibrations, which produce alternating pressure waves that are focused onto the bubble. This results in a prolongation of the collapse phase and an enlargement of the second oscillation, or in time-delayed re-oscillations. The details of the bubble dynamics depend in a complex manner on the degree of surface confinement and on bubble size. Numerical simulations of the first bubble oscillation agreed well with experimental data. They suggest that the alternating rarefaction/compression waves from breakdown-induced wall vibrations cause a prolongation of the first oscillation. By contrast, liquid mass movement in the cuvette corners result in wall vibrations causing late re-oscillations. The strong and rich interaction between the bubble and its surroundings may be relevant for a variety of applications such as intraluminal laser surgery and laser-induced cavitation in microfluidics.

Low-cost fluorescence microscope with microfluidic device fabrication for optofluidic applications

Optofluidic devices have revolutionized the manipulation and transportation of fluid at smaller length scales ranging from micrometers to millimeters. We describe a dedicated optical setup for studying laser-induced cavitation inside a microchannel. In a typical experiment, we use a tightly focused laser beam to locally evaporate the solution laced with a dye resulting in the formation of a microbubble. The evolving bubble interface is tracked using high-speed microscopy and digital image analysis. Furthermore, we extend this system to analyze fluid flow through fluorescence-Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique with minimal adaptations. In addition, we demonstrate the protocols for the in-house fabrication of a microchannel tailored to function as a sample holder in this optical setup. In essence, we present a complete guide for constructing a fluorescence microscope from scratch using standard optical components with flexibility in the design and at a lower cost compared to its commercial analogues.

Numerical simulation data of an elongated cavitation bubble induced by long-pulsed laser

The simulation data presented in this paper describes the formation and growth of an elongated bubble induced by a long-pulsed laser. The simulation is performed using the M2C solver, which is a recently developed three-dimensional finite volume Navier-Stokes CFD solver. The solver is used to simulate the fluid dynamics of the liquid water, the laser radiation, the laser-induced vaporization, and the fluid dynamics of the bubble after its formation. The data presented in this paper corresponds to a representative case of the cavitation induced by a narrow Gaussian beam (cf. [1]). Simulation data include laser radiance, fluid velocity, pressure, temperature, and bubble dynamics. The input files and the workflow to perform this simulation are also provided. With the information provided in this paper, researchers can repeat this simulation, and use it as a starting point to study related problems involving laser-induced cavitation, continuous vaporization, and bubble dynamics in general.

Impact of solid particles on cavitation behaviors and laser-induced degradation in aqueous suspension

A method for degrading organic pollutants in suspension by applying laser-induced cavitation is presented. Cavitation bubbles are produced remotely by laser beams, achieving a purpose of non-contact degradation. In this work, laser-induced bubble dynamics in SiO₂ sand suspension were studied by high-speed imaging. Pulsating characteristics of cavitaiton bubbles in the infinite domain and near a solid boundary were investigated among various laser energies and sand concentrations. Furthermore, the extent of degradation after processing in suspension and the mechanism were analyzed. Results indicate that solid particles in the liquid medium reduce the extent of degradation. However, the extent of degradation may rebound at a proper sand concentration. In addition, compared to several small bubbles in a bubble string (in the infinite domain), a single larger bubble (near a solid boundary) has a much higher degradation ability.

Intra-volume processing of gelatine hydrogel by femtosecond laser-induced cavitation

Cell oxygenation and nutrition are crucial for the viability of tissue-engineered constructs, and different alternatives are currently being developed to achieve an adequate vascularisation of the engineered tissue. One of the alternatives is the generation of channel-like patterns in a bioconstruct. Here, the formation of full-formed channels inside hydrogels by laser-induced cavitation was investigated. A near-infrared, femtosecond laser beam focused with a high numerical aperture was employed to obtain intra-volume modifications of a block of gelatine hydrogel. Characterisation of the laser-processed gelatine was carried out by optical microscopy and epifluorescence microscopy right after and 24 h after the laser process. Rheology analyses on the unprocessed gelatine blocks were conducted to better understand the cavitation mechanism taking place during the intense laser interaction. Different cavitation patterns were observed at varying dose values by changing the repetition rate and the overlap between successive pulses while keeping the laser fluence and the number of passes fixed. This way, cavitation bubble features and behaviour can be controlled to optimise the formation of intra-volume channels in the gelatine volume. Results showed that the generation of fully formed channels was linked to the formation of large non-spherical cavitation bubbles during the laser interaction at high dose and low repetition rates. In conclusion, the formation of fully formed channels was made possible with a near-infrared, femtosecond laser beam strongly focused inside gelatine hydrogel blocks through laser-induced cavitation at high dose and low repetition rates.
