Measurement on the neutron and gamma radiation shielding performance of boron-doped titanium alloy Ti50Cu30Zr15B5 via arc melting technique

The significance of radiation shielding is on the rise due to the expanding areas exposed to radiation emissions. Consequently, there is a critical need to develop metal alloys and composites that exhibit excellent capabilities in absorbing neutron and gamma rays for effective radiation shielding. Low-density Ti-based alloys with controlled structural properties can be used for radiation protection purposes. The present research investigates boron-doped Ti-based alloy, Ti50Cu30Zr15B5, which is synthesized by arc melting technique, and its structural, mechanical properties, neutron, and gamma-ray transmission rate were investigated. Monte Carlo N-Particle simulation (MCNP6.2) code is used for calculating the Thermal (2.53 × 10-8 MeV) and fast (2 MeV) neutron transmission ratio (I/I0) dependent on the sample thickness. The Phy-x program is employed for calculating the gamma-ray LAC, MAC, HVL, TVL, and MFP values. The calculated neutron shielding performance parameters of Ti50Cu30Zr15B5 alloy were compared with materials in the literature. It was found that Ti50Cu30Zr15B5 alloy demonstrated impressive physical characteristics, suggesting that it can serve as a promising alloy for neutron and gamma-ray shielding applications.

An alternative method for calculation of half-value layers without the knowledge of attenuation coefficient

Radiation protection is crucial for the safe utilization of ionizing radiation and minimizing the harmful effect upon exposure, hence some standards have been defined by some relevant organizations for the safe uses of radiation. One of the parameters relevant to the calculation of gamma ray shielding is the half-value layer (HVL), which is normally calculated using the knowledge of linear attenuation coefficient (μ). In this research, an attempt has been made to directly calculate HVL without the knowledge of μ via Monte Carlo simulation technique. For this purpose, in the Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX) code, F1, F5 and Mesh Popul sequences tallies were defined and the optimal structure for the least measurement error was introduced. The MCNPX calculated values showed reasonable agreement with the experimental findings. According to the obtained results, it is suggested that in order to reduce the error of HVL calculations, in exchange for the MCNPX code, the values of the R parameter and the radiation angle of the source should be considered according to the calculations introduced in this plan. Because the results show that by considering the measurement error between 6 and 20%, the code output can be cited in different energy ranges.

Accuracy of virtual monochromatic images generated by the decomposition of photoelectric absorption and Compton scatter in dual-energy computed tomography

The decomposition of the linear attenuation coefficient into photoelectric absorption and Compton scattering provides virtual monochromatic images (VMIs). The accuracy of the computed tomography (CT) number of VMI, which is obtained by decomposing the linear attenuation coefficient into photoelectric absorption and Compton scattering, was verified in the energy range of 40-200 keV. The possibility of improving the accuracy of CT numbers by using pre-energy-calibrated images as input was also investigated. The VMIs were generated in two groups of images: (i) dual-energy scanned images and (ii) high- and low-energy images generated by two-material decomposition (i.e., pre-energy-calibrated images). The object for analysis was solid iodine rods inserted in the center of the multi-energy CT phantom. The VMIs were generated from the dual-energy scanned images and pre-energy-calibrated images, and the theoretical and measured CT numbers of solid iodine rods were compared. Furthermore, the absolute error (AE) and relative error (RE) were calculated. With both images, the accuracy of the CT numbers was extremely high for regions close to the high- and low-tube-voltage X-ray energy or the high and low energy of the input images. By using the pre-energy-calibrated images, the maximum AE was reduced from 133 to 96 HU at an energy of 40 keV. Similarly, the maximum RE was reduced from 325 to 50% at an energy of 200 keV. The pre-energy-calibrated images reduced the overall error of the CT numbers and controlled the energy region where accurate CT numbers could be obtained.

Practical issues and limitations of brain attenuation correction on a simultaneous PET-MR scanner

BACKGROUND

Despite the advent of clinical PET-MR imaging for routine use in 2011 and the development of several methods to address the problem of attenuation correction, some challenges remain. We have identified and investigated several issues that might affect the reliability and accuracy of current attenuation correction methods when these are implemented for clinical and research studies of the brain. These are (1) the accuracy of converting CT Hounsfield units, obtained from an independently acquired CT scan, to 511 keV linear attenuation coefficients; (2) the effect of padding used in the MR head coil; (3) the presence of close-packed hair; (4) the effect of headphones. For each of these, we have examined the effect on reconstructed PET images and evaluated practical mitigating measures.

RESULTS

Our major findings were (1) for both Siemens and GE PET-MR systems, CT data from either a Siemens or a GE PET-CT scanner may be used, provided the conversion to 511 keV μ-map is performed by the PET-MR vendor's own method, as implemented on their PET-CT scanner; (2) the effect of the head coil pads is minimal; (3) the effect of dense hair in the field of view is marked (> 10% error in reconstructed PET images); and (4) using headphones and not including them in the attenuation map causes significant errors in reconstructed PET images, but the risk of scanning without them may be acceptable following sound level measurements.

CONCLUSIONS

It is important that the limitations of attenuation correction in PET-MR are considered when designing research and clinical PET-MR protocols in order to enable accurate quantification of brain PET scans. Whilst the effect of pads is not significant, dense hair, the use of headphones and the use of an independently acquired CT-scan can all lead to non-negligible effects on PET quantification. Although seemingly trivial, these effects add complications to setting up protocols for clinical and research PET-MR studies that do not occur with PET-CT. In the absence of more sophisticated PET-MR brain attenuation correction, the effect of all of the issues above can be minimised if the pragmatic approaches presented in this work are followed.
