Long-term variations of air pollutants and public exposure in China during 2000-2020

Since 2000, China has faced severe air pollution challenges，prompting the initiation of comprehensive emission control measures post-2013. The subsequent implementation of these measures has led to remarkable enhancements in air quality. This study aims to enhance our understanding of the long-term trends in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and gaseous pollutants of ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) across China from 2000 to 2020. Utilizing the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, we conducted a nationwide analysis of air quality, systematically quantifying model predictions against observations for pollutants. The CMAQ model effectively captured the trends of air pollutants, meeting recommended performance benchmarks. The findings reveal variations in pollutant concentrations, with initial increases in PM2.5 followed by a decline after 2013. The proportion of the population living in high PM2.5 concentrations (>75 μg/m3) decreased to <5 % after 2015. However, during the period from 2017 to 2020, around 40 % of the population continued to live in regions that did not meet the criteria for Chinese air quality standards (35 μg/m3). From 2000 to 2019, fewer than 20 % of the population met the WHO standard (100 μg/m3) for MDA8 O3. In 2000, 77 % of the population met the NO2 standard (<20 μg/m3), a figure that declined to 60 % between 2005 and 2014, nearly reaching 70 % in 2020. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the changes in pollutants and public exposure in 2000-2020. It serves as a foundational resource for future efforts in air pollution control and health research.

Thirty-year simulation of environmental fate of 137Cs in the Abukuma River basin considering the characteristics of 137Cs behavior in land uses

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident caused a radioactive contamination of deposited radionuclides, including ¹³⁷Cs, on the land surface. Cesium-137 deposited on the land surface was strongly adsorbed on soil particles and was then washed off through soil erosion. Trends of temporal variation of ¹³⁷Cs wash-off varied greatly depending on land use. Therefore, it is important to reflect the characteristics of ¹³⁷Cs migration processes in each land use to clarify the long-term fate of ¹³⁷Cs. In this study, a 30-year simulation of environmental fate of ¹³⁷Cs was conducted using a distributed radiocesium prediction model, taking into account the characteristics of the ¹³⁷Cs behavior in each land use. Overall, in the Abukuma River basin, the ¹³⁷Cs transported into the ocean for 30 years was estimated to correspond to 4.6 % of the initial deposition in the basin, and the effective half-life of ¹³⁷Cs deposited in the basin was estimated to be 3.7 years shorter (by 11.6 %) than its physical half-life. These results suggested that ¹³⁷Cs deposited from the accident could still remain for decades. Based on the analysis of the ¹³⁷Cs behavior in land use, in 2011, the contribution of ¹³⁷Cs export to the ocean from urban lands was estimated to correspond to 70 % of the total ¹³⁷Cs export. Meanwhile, from 2012 to 2040, the contribution of ¹³⁷Cs export from agricultural lands was estimated to correspond to 75 % of the total ¹³⁷Cs export. The reduction ratios excluding radioactive decay of ¹³⁷Cs remained in areas with and without human activities for 30 years after the accident, defined as the ratios of the total outflow to the initial deposition, were estimated to be 11.5 %-17.7 % and 0.4 %-1.4 %, respectively. These results suggested that human activities enhance the reduction of ¹³⁷Cs remaining in land in the past and future.

The effect of maxillary molar distalization with clear aligner: a 4D finite-element study with staging simulation

INTRODUCTION

Long-term simulation of tooth movement is crucial for clear aligner (CA) treatment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of maxillary molar distalization with CA via an automatic staging simulation.

METHOD

A finite-element method (FEM) model of maxillary dentition, periodontal ligaments, attachments, and corresponding CA was established, and a prescribed 2-mm distalization with 0.1 mm each step of the second molar was simulated. The long-term tooth movement under orthodontic force was simulated with an iterative computation method. The morphologic changes of CA during staging were simulated with the thermal expansion method.

RESULTS

Twenty steps of molar distalization were simulated. Significant distal tilting of the second molar was revealed, along with the proclination of anterior teeth, which caused the 'reversed bow effect'. For the second molar, 4.63°distal tilting at the 20th step was revealed. The intrusion of the incisors and the second molar were 0.43 mm, 0.39 mm, and 0.45 mm, respectively, at step 20. All the anterior teeth showed a proclination of approximately 1.41°-2.01° at the 20th step. The expression rate of the designed distalization of the second molar was relatively low (approximately 68%) compared to the high efficacy of interdental space opening between molars with CA (approximately 89%).

CONCLUSION

A novel method of simulating long-term molar distalization with CA with FEM was developed. The FEM results suggested distal tilting of the second molar and the proclination of anterior teeth during the molar distalization.

A review of the in-situ capping amendments and modeling approaches for the remediation of contaminated marine sediments

Contaminated sediments can pose long-term risks to human beings and ecosystems as they accumulate inorganic and organic contaminants becoming a sink and source of pollution. Compared to ex-situ technologies (i.e., dredging activities and off site treatments), in-situ capping (ISC) intends to minimize contaminated sediment mobilization and impact into the water column whilst treating contamination. Literature shows that numerous types of ISC amendments in presence of both organic and inorganic pollutants are investigated, although a few are contributions whose experiments have been designed and conducted with a view to future engineering. Against this background of shortcomings, this review paper intends to investigate ISC reliability, applicability and its long-term effectiveness, by also comparing reactive and physical ISCs. Additionally, an examination of the main numerical simulations applied to ISC technology was carried out. We found that activated carbon and organoclay resulted the most studied amendments for organically contaminated sediment, whereas biochar, clay minerals, and industrial-by products were more employed in presence of sediment contaminated by metal(loids). There is no better ISC system in absolute terms, since technological performance depends on many factors and only a few experimental investigations included a long-term modeling phase to predict ISC long-term efficiency. Most of numerical models included simplified transport equations based on diffusion and adsorption, and the goodness of fitting between experimental and modeled data was not always computed. The review finally discusses new research directions such as the need for long-term applications on field-scale and cap effectiveness in presence of site-specific tidal forces and currents.

A water quality management methodology for optimizing best management practices considering changes in long-term efficiency

Optimizing long-term best management practices (BMPs) is of vital importance for water quality management, especially for nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. However, changes in the efficiency of BMPs over time have not been incorporated and a proper method for determining long-term BMP configuration strategies is still lacking. In this study, the long-term BMP optimization method (LBMP-OM) was developed for recommending the BMP maintenance-replacement strategies and optimizing the BMP configuration. This new method was then tested in the Daning Watershed, Three Gorges Reservoir Region, China. Based on the results, a 1-year maintenance period and a 3-year replacement period was recommended for a filter strip by considering a changing BMP effectiveness rather than a constant effectiveness and by discussing the rationality of experts' suggestions for maintenance and replacement strategies regarding the regulation of NPS pollution. At the watershed scale, the total cost dropped by 57.36% by introducing the LBMP-OM method compare to the original method. This new method extended the long-term management and configuration of BMPs.

PAHs content of sewage sludge in Europe and its use as soil fertilizer

The European Commission has been planning limits for organic pollutants in sewage sludge for 14years; however no legislation has been implemented. This is mainly due to lack of data on sewage sludge contamination by organic pollutants, and possible negative effects to the environment. However, waste management has become an acute problem in many countries. Management options require extensive waste characterization, since many of them may contain compounds which could be harmful to the ecosystem, such as heavy metals, organic pollutants. The present study aims to show the true European position, regarding the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) content of sewage sludge, by comparing the Italian PAHs content with European Union countries, and at assessing the suitability of sewage sludge as soil fertilizer. The FOCUS Pearl model was used to estimate the concentration of benzo [a] pyrene (B(a)Pyr), the most toxic PAH in soil, and its exposure to organisms was then evaluated. The simulated B(a)Pyr and PAHs, expressed as B(a)Pyr, concentrations in soil were much lower than the B(a)Pyr's most conservative lowest observable effect concentration (LOEC) for soil organisms. Furthermore, the results obtained indicate that it is more appropriate to apply 5tha(-1) sewage sludge annually than 15tha(-1) triennially. Results suggest, the EU maximum recommended limit of 6mgkg(-)(1) PAHs in sewage sludge, should be conservative enough to avoid groundwater contamination and negative effects on soil organisms.
