Animal displacement from marine energy development: Mechanisms and consequences

For marine wave and tidal energy to successfully contribute to global renewable energy goals and climate change mitigation, marine energy projects need to expand beyond small deployments to large-scale arrays. However, with large-scale projects come potential environmental effects not observed at the scales of single devices and small arrays. One of these effects is the risk of displacing marine animals from their preferred habitats or their migration routes, which may increase with the size of arrays and location. Many marine animals may be susceptible to some level of displacement once large marine energy arrays are increasingly integrated into the seascape, including large migratory animals, non-migratory pelagic animals with large home ranges, and benthic and demersal mobile organisms with more limited ranges, among many others. Yet, research around the mechanisms and effects of displacement have been hindered by the lack of clarity within the international marine energy community regarding the definition of displacement, how it occurs, its consequences, species of concern, and methods to investigate the outcomes. This review paper leveraged lessons learned from other industries, such as offshore development, to establish a definition of displacement in the marine energy context, explore which functional groups of marine animals may be affected and in what way, and identify pathways for investigating displacement through modeling and monitoring. In the marine energy context, we defined displacement as the outcome of one of three mechanisms (i.e., attraction, avoidance, and exclusion) triggered by an animal's response to one or more stressors acting as a disturbance, with various consequences at the individual through population levels. The knowledge gaps highlighted in this study will help the regulatory and scientific communities prepare for mitigating, observing, measuring, and characterizing displacement of various animals around marine energy arrays in order to prevent irreversible consequences.

Does innovation in ocean energy generations-related technologies in G7 countries reduce carbon dioxide emissions? Role of international collaboration in green technology development and commercial and monetary policies

Recognizing that innovation in renewable energy generation is an effective way to improve sustainable energy generation, the government and industries in the G7 states have invested heavily in the development of novel green technologies related to ocean energy generation. Irrespective of this, the existing literature has failed to explore the nexus between innovation in innovation in ocean generation-related technologies (IOEGT) and carbon dioxide emissions (CO₂e). This paper contributes to the environmental economics by looking at the linkage between IOEGT and CO₂e, with the international collaboration in green technology development (ICGTD), gross domestic product per capita (GDPPC), expansionary monetary policy (EMP), expansionary commercial policy (ECM), contractionary monetary policy (CMP), renewable energy consumption (REC), and contractionary commercial policy (ECM) in the G7 states from 1990 to 2020. The Westerlund and Edgerton (2008) test validated the long-run association among IOEGT, EMP, ECM, ICGTD, CMP, REC, ECM, GDPPC, and CO₂e. The cross-sectional-autoregressive-distributed lag estimators found the following main findings. First, IOEGT is a helpful tool for reducing CO₂e. Second, ICGTD and REC were associated with a lower level of CO₂e. Third, EMP and ECP contribute to an increase in carbon emissions. However, CCP and CMP are essential to the long-term reduction of CO₂e. Fourthly, GDPPC exacerbates the negative effects of CO₂e.

Evaluation of halophilic microalgae isolated from Rabigh Red Sea coastal area for biodiesel production: Screening and biochemical studies

In the present study, different water samples from Red Sea coastal area at Rabigh city, Saudi Arabia were studied for their dominant algal species. Microalgal isolation was carried out based on dilution method and morphologically examined using F/2 as a growth medium. Dry weight and main biochemical composition (protein, carbohydrates, lipids) of all species were performed at the end of the growth, and biodiesel characteristics were estimated. Nannochloropsis sp., Dunaliella sp., Tetraselmis sp., Prorocentrum sp., Chlorella sp., Nitzschia sp., Coscinodiscus sp., and Navicula sp. were the most dominant species in the collected water samples and were used for further evaluation. Nannochloropsis sp. surpassed all other isolates in concern of biomass production with the maximum recorded dry weight of 0.89 g L⁻¹, followed by Dunaliella sp. (0.69 g L⁻¹). The highest crude protein content was observed in Nitzschia sp. (38.21%) and Dunaliella sp. (18.01%), while Nannochloropsis sp. showed 13.38%, with the lowest recorded lipid content in Coscinodiscus sp. (10.09%). Based on the growth, lipid content, and biodiesel characteristics, the present study suggested Dunaliella sp. and Nitzschia sp. as promising candidates for further large-scale biodiesel production.

Good or bad vibrations? Impacts of anthropogenic vibration on the marine epibenthos

Anthropogenic activities directly contacting the seabed, such as drilling and pile-driving, produce a significant vibration likely to impact benthic invertebrates. As with terrestrial organisms, vibration may be used by marine species for the detection of biotic and abiotic cues, yet the significance of this and the sensitivities to vibration are previously undocumented for many marine species. Exposure to additional vibration may elicit behavioral or physiological change, or even physical damage at high amplitudes or particular frequencies, although this is poorly studied in underwater noise research. Here we review studies regarding the sensitivities and responses of marine invertebrates to substrate-borne vibration. This includes information related to vibrations produced by those construction activities directly impacting the seabed, such as pile-driving. This shows the extent to which species are able to detect vibration and respond to anthropogenically-produced vibrations, although the short and long-term implications of this are not known. As such it is especially important that the sensitivities of these species are further understood, given that noise and energy-generating human impacts on the marine environment are only likely to increase and that there are now legal instruments requiring such effects to be monitored and controlled.

Use of baited remote underwater video (BRUV) and motion analysis for studying the impacts of underwater noise upon free ranging fish and implications for marine energy management

Free-ranging individual fish were observed using a baited remote underwater video (BRUV) system during sound playback experiments. This paper reports on test trials exploring BRUV design parameters, image analysis and practical experimental designs. Three marine species were exposed to playback noise, provided as examples of behavioural responses to impulsive sound at 163-171dB re 1μPa (peak-to-peak SPL) and continuous sound of 142.7dB re 1μPa (RMS, SPL), exhibiting directional changes and accelerations. The methods described here indicate the efficacy of BRUV to examine behaviour of free-ranging species to noise playback, rather than using confinement. Given the increasing concern about the effects of water-borne noise, for example its inclusion within the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and the lack of empirical evidence in setting thresholds, this paper discusses the use of BRUV, and short term behavioural changes, in supporting population level marine noise management.

Oceans and Human Health: a rising tide of challenges and opportunities for Europe

The European Marine Board recently published a position paper on linking oceans and human health as a strategic research priority for Europe. With this position paper as a reference, the March 2014 Cornwall Oceans and Human Health Workshop brought together key scientists, policy makers, funders, business, and non governmental organisations from Europe and the US to review the recent interdisciplinary and cutting edge research in oceans and human health specifically the growing evidence of the impacts of oceans and seas on human health and wellbeing (and the effects of humans on the oceans). These impacts are a complex mixture of negative influences (e.g. from climate change and extreme weather to harmful algal blooms and chemical pollution) and beneficial factors (e.g. from natural products including seafood to marine renewable energy and wellbeing from interactions with coastal environments). Integrated approaches across disciplines, institutions, and nations in science and policy are needed to protect both the oceans and human health and wellbeing now and in the future.
