Magnesium Fertilization Increases Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Wheat fertilized with Mg, regardless of the method of application, increases nitrogen fertilizer (N_f) efficiency. This hypothesis was tested in 2013, 2014, and 2015. A two-factorial experiment with three doses of Mg (i.e., 0, 25, and 50 kg ha^-1) and two stages of Mg foliar fertilization (without; BBCH 30; 49/50; 30 + 49/50) was carried out. Foliar vs. in-soil Mg fertilization resulted in a comparable grain yield increase (0.5-0.6 t ha^-1). The interaction of both fertilization systems increased the yield by 0.85-0.9 t ha^-1. The booting/heading phase was optimal for foliar fertilization. Mg accumulation by wheat fertilized with Mg increased by 17% compared to the NPK plot. The recovery of foliar Mg was multiple in relation to its dose. The recovery of the in-soil Mg applied ranged from 10 to 40%. The increase in yield resulted from the effective use of N taken up by wheat. In 2014 and 2015, this amount was 21-25 kg N ha^-1. The increase in yield resulted from the extended transfer of N from vegetative wheat parts to grain. Mg applied to wheat, irrespective of the method, increased the efficiency of the N taken up by the crop. Mg fertilization resulted in higher N_f productivity, as indicated by the increased nitrogen apparent efficiency indices.

Differences in morphological and physiological features of citrus seedlings are related to Mg transport from the parent to branch organs

BACKGROUND

In this study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that magnesium (Mg) remobilization in citrus plants is regulated by Mg supply and contributes to differences in the growth of the parent and branch organs. Citrus seedlings were grown in sand under Mg deficient (0 mmol Mg²⁺ L^-1, -Mg) and Mg sufficient (2 mmol Mg²⁺ L^-1, + Mg) conditions. The effects on biomass, Mg uptake and transport, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence, as well as related morphological and physiological parameters were evaluated in different organs.

RESULTS

Mg deficiency significantly decreased plant biomass, with a decrease in total plant biomass of 39.6%, and a greater than twofold decrease in the branch organs compared with that of the parent organs. Reduced photosynthesis capacity was caused by a decreased in pigment levels and photosynthetic electron transport chain disruption, thus affecting non-structural carbohydrate accumulation and plant growth. However, the adaptive responses of branch leaves to Mg deficiency were greater than those in parent leaves. Mg deficiency inhibited plant Mg uptake but enhanced Mg remobilization from parent to branch organs, thus changing related growth variables and physiological parameters, including protein synthesis and antioxidant enzyme activity. Moreover, in the principal components analysis, these variations were highly clustered in both the upper and lower parent leaves, but highly separated in branch leaves under the different Mg conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

Mg deficiency inhibits the growth of the parent and branch organs of citrus plants, with high Mg mobility contributing to differences in physiological metabolism. These findings suggest that Mg management should be optimized for sustainable citrus production.

Magnesium incorporation into primary dental enamel and its effect on mechanical properties

Cross-sectional study of sound primary dental enamel revealed hardness zonation and, in parallel, significant change in the Mg content below the prismless layer. Mg content is known to play an important role in enamel apatite biomineralization, therefore, Mg ion exchange experiments were carried out on the outer surface of sound primary molars and on reference abiogenic Ca-phosphates using MgCl₂ solution. Effects of Mg incorporation on crystal/particle size, ionic ratio and morphology were compared and the observed changes were explained by parallel diffusion and dissolution/reprecipitation processes. Based on depth profile analysis and high resolution electron microscopy of the Mg-exchanged dental enamel, a poorly ordered surface layer of approximately 10-15 nanometer thickness was identified. This thin layer is strongly enriched in Mg and has non-apatitic structure. Below the surface layer, the Mg content increased only moderately (up to ~3 at%) and the apatite crystal structure of enamel was preserved. As a common effect of the Mg exchanged volume, primary dental enamel exhibited about 20% increase of nanohardness, which is intrepreted by strengthening of both the thin surface layer and the region below due to the decreased crystallite size and the effect of incorporated Mg, respectively. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Dental enamel is the most durable mineralized tissue in the human body, which, in spite to be exposed to extreme conditions like mastication and acidic dissolution, is able to fulfill its biological function during lifetime. In this study we show that minor component magnesium can affect hardness properties of human primary dental enamel. Then, through Mg incorporation experiments we provide an additional proof for the poorly ordered Mg-containing intergranular phase which has been recently observed. Also, we report that the hardness of dental enamel can be increased by ca. 20% by Mg incorporation. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of sound primary dental enamel structure and may inspire new pathways for assisted remineralization of enamel and regenerative dentistry.

MgONPs Can Boost Plant Growth: Evidence from Increased Seedling Growth, Morpho-Physiological Activities, and Mg Uptake in Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

In this study, we documented the impact of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) on the various morpho-physiological changes by root irrigation in tobacco plants in the matrix media, as well as the uptake and accumulation of the NPs over a range of concentrations (50⁻250 μg/mL). Our results showed that the seed germination rate was not affected following exposure to MgONPs for 5 days. Enhanced plant growth together with increased peroxidase activity (39.63 U mg-1 protein in the 250 μg/mL MgONPs treatment, 36.63 U mg-1 protein in the control), superoxide dismutase activity (30.15 U mg-1 protein compared to 26.95 U mg-1 protein in the control), and chlorophyll content (the chlorophyll a and b contents in 0 and 250 μg/mL of MgONPs were 0.21, 0.12 μg/g to 1.21, 0.67 μg/g, respectively) were observed after 30 days of MgONP treatment. However, the malondialdehyde, protein, and relative water contents did not differ significantly, indicating that the NPs in the test concentrations had no phytotoxicity and even promoted plant growth. Scanning electron microscopy and paraffin section observations indicated that the MgONPs did not affect the plant tissue structures and cells. In addition, an elevated Mg content was detected in the plant tissues exposed to MgONPs, suggesting that the Mg was taken up by the tobacco roots and translocated to the shoots and leaves, which were probably the most important tools to cause an increase in the chlorophyll content and stimulate growth. In particular, compared with the controls, a substantially higher Mg content was observed in the leaves (12.93 mg/g in the MgONPs treatment, 9.30 mg/g in the control) exposed to 250 μg/mL MgONPs, especially in the lower and middle leaves. This result confirmed that the contents of plant Mg-element in the old leaves were increased by MgONPs. In summary, this study investigated increased Mg uptake and growth stimulation, as well as the induction of various positive morpho-physiological changes to tobacco plants when exposed to MgONPs. Results elucidate the promotional impact of the NPs on plant health and their implications for agricultural safety and security.
