Biohydrogen production by lactate-driven dark fermentation of real organic wastes derived from solid waste treatment plants

This study evaluated the hydrogen production potential through lactate-driven dark fermentation (LD-DF) of organic wastes from solid waste treatment plants, including the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), mixed sewage sludge, and two OFMSW leachates. In initial batch fermentations, only OFMSW supported a significant hydrogen yield (70.1 ± 7.7 NmL-H2/g-VS added) among the tested feedstocks. Lactate acted as an important hydrogen precursor, requiring the presence of carbohydrates for sequential two-step lactate-type fermentation. The impact of operational pH (5.5-6.5) and initial total solids (TS) concentration (5-12.5 % w/w) was also evaluated using OFMSW as substrate, obtaining hydrogen yields ranging from 6.6 to 55.9 NmL-H2/g-VSadded. The highest yield occurred at 6.5 pH and 7.5 % TS. The LD-DF pathway was indicated to be present under diverse pH and TS conditions, supported by employing a specialized microbial consortium capable of performing LD-DF, along with the observed changes in lactate levels during fermentation.

High-rate anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge using anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor under various sludge composition and organic loading rates

This study investigates the effects of sludge compositions and organic loading rates (OLRs) on stable biomethane production during sludge digestion. Batch digestion experiments evaluate the effects of alkaline-thermal pretreatment and waste activated sludge (WAS) fractions on the biochemical methane potential (BMP) of sludge. A lab-scale anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) is fed with a mixture of primary sludge and pretreated WAS. Monitoring of volatile fatty acid to total alkalinity (FOS/TAC) helps maintain operational stability. The highest average biomethane production rate of 0.7 L/L·d is achieved when the OLR, hydraulic retention time, WAS volume fraction, and FOS/TAC ratio are 5.0 g COD/L·d, 12 days, 0.75, and 0.32, respectively. This study finds functional redundancy in two pathways: hydrogenotrophic and acetolactic. An increase in OLR promotes bacterial and archaeal abundance and specific methanogenic activity. These results can be applied to the design and operation of sludge digestion for stable, high-rate biomethane recovery.

Effect of mixed primary and secondary sludge for two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD)

As an energy-efficient and eco-friendly sludge treatment process, two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) is widely employed to recovery biomass energy from waste sludge. However, the effect of primary and secondary sludge for two-stage AD was not clear. In this study, two-stage AD of mixed sludge in different volume ratio was investigated. The maximum cumulative H₂ yield (100.5 ml) and CH₄ yield (2643.6 ml) were obtained in volume ratio of 1:3 (primary sludge: secondary sludge). In two-phase AD, mixed sludge could induce positive effect on both organics releasing in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the utilization of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). By investigating the compositional characteristics of dissolved organic matters (DOM) through excitation-emission matrix (EEM) coupling with fluorescence regional integration (FRI), it revealed more degradable substances utilization in mixture of sludge. Results from this work suggest that two-phase AD with mixed sludge is efficient for renewable energy recovery.

Use of solid residue from thermal power plant (fly ash) for enhancing sewage sludge anaerobic digestion: Influence of fly ash particle size

The influence of fly ash particle size on methane production and anaerobic biodegradability was evaluated. Assays with different fly ash particle sizes (0.8-2.36mm) at a concentration of 50mg/L were ran under mesophilic conditions. In anaerobic processes operating with fly ash, greater removal of both volatile total and suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand (total and soluble) was achieved, with an increase of methane production between 28% and 96% compared to the control reactors. The highest increase occurred at ash particles sizes of 1.0-1.4mm. The metal concentrations in the digestates obtained after anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge are far below those considered as limiting for the use of sludge in soils.

Biochemical methane potential from sewage sludge: Effect of an aerobic pretreatment and fly ash addition as source of trace elements

The effect of aerobic pretreatment and fly ash addition on the production of methane from mixed sludge is studied. Three assays with pretreated and not pretreated mixed sludge in the presence of fly ash (concentrations of 0, 10, 25, 50, 250 and 500mg/L) were run at mesophilic condition. It was found that the combined use of aerobic pretreatment and fly ash addition increases methane production up to 70% when the fly ash concentrations were lower than 50mg/L, while concentrations higher than 250mg/L cause up to 11% decrease of methane production. For the anaerobic treatment of mixed sludge without pretreatment, the fly ash improved methane generation at all the concentrations studied, with a maximum of 56%. The removal of volatile solids does not show an improvement compared to the separate use of an aerobic pre-treatment and fly ash addition. Therefore, the combined use of the aerobic pre-treatment and fly ash addition improves only the production of methane.

Assessment of free nitrous acid pre-treatment on a mixture of primary sludge and waste activated sludge: Effect of exposure time and concentration

Free nitrous acid (FNA) has been shown to enhance the biodegradability of waste activated sludge (WAS) but its effectiveness on the pre-treatment of mixed sludge is not known. This study explores the effectiveness of four different FNA concentrations (0, 2.49, 3.55, 4.62mgN-HNO2/L) and three exposure times (2, 5, 9h) lower than the ones reported in literature (24h) on WAS characteristics and specific methane production (SMP). FNA pre-treatment reduced sludge cell viability below 10% in all cases after an exposure time of 5h, increasing the solubility of the organic matter. The treated mixed sludge was used as substrate for the biochemical methane production tests to assess its SMP. Results showed a significant increase (up to 25%) on SMP when the sludge was pretreated with the lowest FNA concentration (2.49mgN-HNO2/L) during 2 and 5h but did not show any improvement at longer exposure times or higher FNA concentrations.

Anaerobic digestion of thermal pre-treated sludge at different solids concentrations--Computation of mass-energy balance and greenhouse gas emissions

The effect of thermal pre-treatment on sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) efficiency was studied at different total solids (TS) concentrations (20.0, 30.0 and 40.0 g TS/L) and digestion times (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 days) for primary, secondary and mixed wastewater sludge. Moreover, sludge pre-treatment, AD and disposal processes were evaluated based on a mass-energy balance and corresponding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Mass balance revealed that the least quantity of digestate was generated by thermal pre-treated secondary sludge at 30.0 g TS/L. The net energy (energy output-energy input) and energy ratio (energy output/energy input) for thermal pre-treated sludge was greater than control in all cases. The reduced GHG emissions of 73.8 × 10(-3) g CO2/g of total dry solids were observed for the thermal pre-treated secondary sludge at 30.0 g TS/L. Thermal pre-treatment of sludge is energetically beneficial and required less retention time compared to control.

Improving sewage sludge ultrasonic pretreatment under pressure by changing initial pH

This work aimed at understanding the combined effect of sludge pH, temperature, and external pressure on the efficiency of sewage sludge ultrasound (US) pretreatment. Based on the evolution of both the degree of sludge disintegration (DDCOD) and pH, application of 40 mgNaOH/gTS during 30 min was selected for chemical pretreatment. Mechanical and thermal effects induced by cavitation contributed in similar proportion to sludge disruption, but the role of the latter effect tended to be weakened after mild alkalisation of sludge. When applying external pressure, DDCOD was always improved, by about 10% at the optimal value of 2 bar. The optimal combination was an addition of 40 mgNaOH/gTS prior to adiabatic sonication at 2 bar, resulting in a DDCOD value of about 46% at 75,000 kJ/kgTS (as compared to 35% for sole US) for the investigated mixed sludge. Very short time US application yielded a drastic reduction of the volume mean particle size, mainly due to the erosion and disruption of large flocs (>90 μm), yet this was not sufficient to initiate significant subsequent COD solubilisation under stirring.
