Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a powerful class of organocatalysts that mediate a variety of organic transformations. The Benzoin reaction constitutes one of the earliest known carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions catalysed by NHCs. The rapid growth of NHC catalysis in general has resulted in the development of a variety of benzoin and benzoin-type reactions. An overview of such NHC-catalysed benzoin reactions is presented.

Abstract
A new catalytic system based on a Zn(II) NHC precursor has been developed for the cross-coupling reaction of alkyl halides with diboron reagents, which represents a novel use of a Group XII catalyst for CX borylation. This approach gives borylations of unactivated primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl halides at room temperature to furnish alkyl boronates, with good functional-group compatibility, under mild conditions. Preliminary mechanistic investigations demonstrated that this borylation reaction seems to involve one-electron processes.

Abstract
N-methylation of amines is an important step in the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals and has been widely applied in the preparation of other key intermediates and chemicals. Therefore, the development of efficient methylation methods has attracted considerable attention. In this respect, carbon dioxide is an attractive C1 building block because it is an abundant, renewable, and nontoxic carbon source. Consequently, we developed a highly chemoselective, metal-free catalytic system that operates under ambient conditions for the N-methylation of amines.

Abstract
Aryl aldehyde activation: Oxidative activation of 2-methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde (I) through N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis generates heterocyclic ortho-quinodimethane (II) as a key intermediate. This intermediate then undergoes formal [4+2] cycloaddition with trifluoromethyl ketones or isatins to form polycyclic lactones containing a quaternary carbon center.

Abstract
As a key element in the construction of complex organic scaffolds, the formation of C-C bonds remains a challenge in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. Recent advancements in single-electron chemistry have enabled new methods for the formation of various C-C bonds. Disclosed herein is the development of a novel single-electron reduction of acyl azoliums for the formation of ketones from carboxylic acids. Facile construction of the acyl azolium in situ followed by a radical-radical coupling was made possible merging N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and photoredox catalysis. The utility of this protocol in synthesis was showcased in the late-stage functionalization of a variety of pharmaceutical compounds. Preliminary investigations using chiral NHCs demonstrate that enantioselectivity can be achieved, showcasing the advantages of this protocol over alternative methodologies.

Abstract
Cyclic (amino)(aryl)carbenes (CAArCs) result from the replacement of the alkyl substituent of cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbenes (CAACs) by an aryl group. This structural modification leads to enhanced electrophilicity of the carbene center with retention of the high nucleophilicity of CAACs, and therefore CAArCs feature a small singlet-triplet gap. The isoindolium precursors are readily prepared in good yields, and deprotonation at low temperature, in the presence of [RhCl(cod)]2 and [(Me2S)AuCl] lead to air-stable rhodium and gold CAArC-supported complexes, respectively. The rhodium complexes promote the [3+2] cycloaddition of diphenylcyclopropenone with ethyl phenylpropiolate, and induce the addition of 2-vinylpyridine to alkenes by CH activation. The gold complexes allow for the catalytic three-component preparation of 1,2-dihydroquinolines from aniline and phenyl acetylene. These preliminary results illustrate the potential of CAArC ligands in transition-metal catalysis.

Abstract
Within the research field of antitumor metal-based agents alternative to platinum drugs, gold(I/III) coordination complexes have always been in the forefront due mainly to the familiarity of medicinal chemists with gold compounds, whose application in medicine goes back in the ancient times, and to the rich chemistry shown by this metal. In the last decade, N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHC), a class of ligands that largely resembles the chemical properties of phosphines, became of interest for gold(I) medicinal applications, and since then, the research on NHC-gold(I/III) coordination complexes as potential antiproliferative agents boosted dramatically. Different classes of gold(I/III)-NHC complexes often showed an outstanding in vitro antiproliferative activity, however up to now very few in vivo data have been reported to corroborate the in vitro results. This review summarizes all achievements in the field of gold (I/III) complexes comprising NHC ligands proposed as potential antiproliferative agents in the period 2004-2016, and critically analyses biological data (mainly IC50 values) in relation to the chemical structures of Au compounds. The state of art of the in vivo studies so far described is also reported.

Abstract
NHC-AuI complexes were used to prepare stable, water-soluble, NHC-protected gold nanoparticles. The water-soluble, charged nature of the nanoparticles permitted analysis by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), which showed that the nanoparticles were highly monodisperse, with tunable core diameters between 2.0 and 3.3 nm depending on the synthesis conditions. Temporal, thermal, and chemical stability of the nanoparticles were determined to be high. Treatment with thiols caused etching of the particles after 24 h; however larger plasmonic particles showed greater resistance to thiol treatment. These water-soluble, bio-compatible nanoparticles are promising candidates for use in photoacoustic imaging, with even the smallest nanoparticles giving reliable photoacoustic signals.

Abstract
A catalytic method for the site- and enantioselective addition of commercially available di-B(pin)-methane to allylic phosphates is introduced (pin=pinacolato). Transformations may be facilitated by an NHC-Cu complex (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) and products obtained in 63-95 % yield, 88:12 to >98:2 S(N)2'/S(N)2 selectivity, and 85:15-99:1 enantiomeric ratio. The utility of the approach, entailing the involvement of different catalytic cross-coupling processes, is highlighted by its application to the formal synthesis of the cytotoxic natural product rhopaloic acid A.

Abstract
Reported is a highly enantioselective copper-catalyzed Markovnikov protoboration of unactivated terminal alkenes. A variety of simple and abundant feedstock α-olefins bearing a diverse array of functional groups and heterocyclic substituents can be used as substrates, and the reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions at ambient temperature to provide expedient access to enantioenriched alkylboronic esters in good regioselectivity and with excellent enantiocontrol. Critical to the success of the protocol was the development and application of a novel, sterically hindered N-heterocyclic carbene, (R,R,R,R)-ANIPE, as the ligand for copper.

Abstract
Atropisomeric molecules have found proven applications and have shown promising potential in chemistry and medicine. The design of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed reactions to construct atropisomerically enriched molecules has emerged as an important research topic in recent years. These reactions include kinetic resolutions, asymmetric desymmetrizations, central-to-axial chirality conversions, and cycloadditions. This Minireview evaluates and summarizes the progress in NHC-based organic catalysis for access to atropisomers, and briefly states our personal perspectives on the future advancement of this topic. NHC catalysis has provided rich and unique reaction modes that have led to success in the asymmetric synthesis of central-chiral molecules. It is expected that similar success could also be achieved in developing NHC catalysis to prepare atropisomeric molecules, including those not easily accessible by other methods.

Abstract
The merging of photoredox catalysis and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis for γ- and ϵ-alkylation of enals with alkyl radicals was developed. The alkylation reaction of γ-oxidized enals with alkyl halides worked well for the synthesis γ-multisubstituted-α,β-unsaturated esters, including those with challenging vicinal all-carbon quaternary centers. The synthesis of ϵ-multisubstituted-α,β-γ,δ-diunsaturated esters by an unprecedented NHC-catalyzed ϵ-functionalization was also established.

Abstract
The combination of light activation and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis has enabled the use of acid fluorides as substrates in a UVA-light-mediated photochemical transformation previously observed only with aromatic aldehydes and ketones. Stoichiometric studies and TD-DFT calculations support a mechanism involving the photoactivation of an ortho-toluoyl azolium intermediate, which exhibits "ketone-like" photochemical reactivity under UVA irradiation. Using this photo-NHC catalysis approach, a novel photoenolization/Diels-Alder (PEDA) process was developed that leads to diverse isochroman-1-one derivatives.

Abstract
Palladium(II) complexes are generally reactive toward substitution/reduction, and their biological applications are seldom explored. A new series of palladium(II) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes that are stable in the presence of biological thiols are reported. A representative complex, [Pd(C^N^N)(N,N'-nBu2 NHC)](CF3 SO3 ) (Pd1 d, HC^N^N=6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, N,N'-nBu2 NHC=N,N'-di-n-butylimidazolylidene), displays potent killing activity toward cancer cell lines (IC50 =0.09-0.5 μm) but is less cytotoxic toward a normal human fibroblast cell line (CCD-19Lu, IC50 =11.8 μm). In vivo anticancer studies revealed that Pd1 d significantly inhibited tumor growth in a nude mice model. Proteomics data and in vitro biochemical assays reveal that Pd1 d exerts anticancer effects, including inhibition of an epidermal growth factor receptor pathway, induction of mitochondrial dysfunction, and antiangiogenic activity to endothelial cells.

Abstract
Radical borylation using N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-BH3 complexes as boryl radical precursors has emerged as an important synthetic tool for organoboron assembly. However, the majority of reported methods are limited to reaction modes involving carbo- and/or hydroboration of specific alkenes and alkynes. Moreover, the generation of NHC-boryl radicals relies principally on hydrogen atom abstraction with the aid of radical initiators. A distinct radical generation method is reported, as well as the reaction pathways of NHC-boryl radicals enabled by photoredox catalysis. NHC-boryl radicals are generated via a single-electron oxidation and subsequently undergo cross-coupling with the in-situ-generated radical anions to yield gem-difluoroallylboronates. A photoredox-catalyzed radical arylboration reaction of alkenes was achieved using cyanoarenes as arylating components from which elaborated organoborons were accessed. Mechanistic studies verified the oxidative formation of NHC-boryl radicals through a single-electron-transfer pathway.

Abstract
We report here the first purely organometallic fac-[MnI (CO)3 (bis-Me NHC)Br] complex with unprecedented activity for the selective electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO, exceeding 100 turnovers with excellent faradaic yields (ηCO ≈95 %) in anhydrous CH3 CN. Under the same conditions, a maximum turnover frequency (TOFmax ) of 2100 s-1 was measured by cyclic voltammetry, which clearly exceeds the values reported for other manganese-based catalysts. Moreover, the addition of water leads to the highest TOFmax value (ca. 320 000 s-1 ) ever reported for a manganese-based catalyst. A MnI tetracarbonyl intermediate was detected under catalytic conditions for the first time.

Abstract
The first examples of Lewis base catalyzed enantioselective boryl conjugate additions (BCAs) that generate products containing boron-substituted quaternary carbon stereogenic centers are disclosed. Reactions are performed in the presence of 1.0-5.0 mol% of a readily accessible chiral accessible N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and commercially available bis(pinacolato)diboron; cyclic or linear α,β-unsaturated ketones can be used and rigorous exclusion of air or moisture is not necessary. The desired products are obtained in 63-95% yield and 91:9 to >99:1 enantiomeric ratio (e.r.). The special utility of the NHC-catalyzed approach is demonstrated in the context of an enantioselective synthesis of natural product antifungal (-)-crassinervic acid.

Abstract
Self-assembled monolayers of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) on copper are reported. The monolayer structure is highly dependent on the N,N-substituents on the NHC. On both Cu(111) and Au(111), bulky isopropyl substituents force the NHC to bind perpendicular to the metal surface while methyl- or ethyl-substituted NHCs lie flat. Temperature-programmed desorption studies show that the NHC binds to Cu(111) with a desorption energy of Edes =152±10 kJ mol-1 . NHCs that bind upright desorb cleanly, while flat-lying NHCs decompose leaving adsorbed organic residues. Scanning tunneling microscopy of methylated NHCs reveals arrays of covalently linked dimers which transform into adsorbed (NHC)2 Cu species by extraction of a copper atom from the surface after annealing.

Herein, we demonstrate the efficiency of the metal-carbene template approach (MCTA) to synthesize highly robust and soluble three-dimensional polyimidazolium cages (PICs) of different sizes, each bearing numerous imidazolium groups, and use these as templates to synthesize and stabilize catalytically active, cavity-hosted, dispersed poly-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-anchored gold NPs. Owing to the stabilization of the NHC ligands and the effective confinement of the cage cavities, the as-prepared poly-NHC-shell-encapsulated AuNPs displayed promising stability towards heat, pH, and chemical regents. Most notably, all the Au@PCCs (PCC=polycarbene cage) exhibited excellent catalytic activities in various chemical reactions, together with high stability and durability.

Abstract
This report describes the synthesis and characterization of novel N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-gold(I) complexes and their bioconjugation to the CCRF-CEM-leukemia-specific aptamer sgc8c. Successful bioconjugation was confirmed by the use of fluorescent tags on both the NHC-Au(I) complex and the aptamer. Cell-viability assays indicated that the NHC-Au(I) -aptamer conjugate was more cytotoxic than the NHC-gold complex alone. A combination of flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, and cell-viability assays provided clear evidence that the NHC-Au(I) -aptamer conjugate was selective for targeted CCRF-CEM leukemia cells.

Abstract
All-catalytic route to trisubstituted allenes: The first examples of catalytic enantioselective allylic substitution reactions that involve alkyne-based nucleophiles and lead to products having tertiary stereogenic centers are followed by an exceptionally stereospecific amine-catalyzed isomerization to trisubstituted allenes (see picture; NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene).

Abstract
The investigation of the mechanisms of mechanochromic luminescence is of fundamental importance for the development of materials for photonic sensors, data storage, and luminescence switches. The structural origin of this phenomenon in phosphorescent molecular systems is rarely known and thus the formulation of structure-property relationships remains challenging. Changes in the M-M interactions have been proposed as the main mechanism with d10 coinage metal compounds. Herein, we describe a new mechanism-a mechanically induced reversible formation of a cation-anion exciplex based on Cu-F interactions-that leads to highly efficient mechanochromic phosphorescence and unusual large emission shifts from UV-blue to yellow for CuI complexes. The low-energy luminescence is thermo- and vaporesponsive, thus allowing the generation of white light as well as for recovering the original UV-blue emission.

Abstract
A ligand-controlled regiodivergent and enantioselective copper-catalyzed intermolecular hydroallylation of alkynes with allylic phosphates and hydrosilanes has been achieved for the first time. The chiral bidentate sulfonate-containing N-heterocyclic carbene ligated CuCl complex leads to enantioenriched SN 2'-type products, whereas the use of the IMesCuCl catalyst affords SN 2-type products. Thus a range of chiral branched and achiral linear 1,4-dienes could be facilely synthesized from readily available alkynes in a regiodivergent manner.
