Biochar significantly reduced fumigant emissions and benefited germination and plant growth under field conditions

Soil fumigation continues to play an important role in soil disinfection, but tools to significantly reduce emissions while providing environmental benefits (e.g., biochar) are lacking. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of biochar products on fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) and chloropicrin (CP) emissions, their distribution and persistence in soil, nematode control, and potential toxicity to plants in a field trial. Treatments included three biochar products [two derived from almond shells (ASB) at either 550 or 900 °C pyrolysis temperature and one from coconut shells (CSB) at 550 °C] at 30 and 60 t ha^-1, a surface covering with a low permeability film (TIF), and no surface covering (control). A mixture of 1,3-D (∼65%) and CP (∼35%) was injected to ∼60 cm soil depth at a combined rate of 640 kg ha^-1. All biochar treatments significantly reduced emissions by 38-100% compared to the control. The ASB (900 °C) at both rates reduced emissions as effectively as the TIF (by 99-100%). Both fumigant emission reduction and residue in surface soil were positively correlated with biochar's adsorption capacity while cucumber germination rate and dry biomass were negatively correlated with residual fumigant concentrations in surface soil. This research demonstrated the potential and benefits of using biochar produced from local orchard feedstocks to control fumigant emissions. Additional research is needed to maximize the benefits of biochar on fumigant emission reductions without impacting plant growth.

Control of foliar phytoparasitic nematodes through sustainable natural materials: Current progress and challenges

Nematodes are hidden enemies that inhibit the entire ecosystem causing adverse effects on animals and plants, leading to economic losses. Management of foliar phytoparasitic nematodes is an excruciating task. Various approaches were used to control nematodes dispersal, i.e., traditional practices, resistant cultivars, plant extract, compost, biofumigants, induced resistance, nano-biotechnology applications, and chemical control. This study reviews the various strategies adopted in combating plant-parasitic nematodes while examining the benefits and challenges. The significant awareness of biological and environmental factors determines the effectiveness of nematode control, where the incorporation of alternative methods to reduce the nematodes population in plants with increasing crop yield. The researchers were interested in explaining the fundamental molecular mechanisms, providing an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the sustainable management of nematodes in croplands. Eco-friendly pesticides are effective as a sustainable nematodes management tool and safe for humans. The current review presents the eco-friendly methods in controlling nematodes to minimize yield losses, and benefit the agricultural production efficiency and the environment.

Inside the plant: addressing bacterial endophytes in biotic stress alleviation

Bacterial endophytes are the internal association of bacteria with the plants, cherished whole or any part of their life cycle inside the plant. They are reported to improve plant health against the biotic stresses via de novo synthesis of structural compounds and stimulation of plant immunity. They are found to be vital in development of host resistance against phytopathogens and capable in reducing and elimination of deleterious effects of plant pathogens. Fungal-, bacterial-, viral-, insect- and nematode-associated negative effect can be reduced by the bacterial endophytes. They are also reported to control plant pathogens through several defense mechanisms such as by producing antimicrobial compounds and antibiotics, de novo synthesis of structural compounds, keeping out of pathogens by niche competition and induction of plant immunity or induced systemic resistance. In this review, an effort is made to summarize the exploitation of endophytic bacteria as a biological substitute to control biotic stresses in agricultural practices.

Field trial assessment of ivermectin pharmacokinetics and efficacy against susceptible and resistant nematode populations in cattle

The study compared the pharmacokinetic (PK) behaviour and anthelmintic efficacy against susceptible and resistant nematodes following subcutaneous (SC) and oral administration of ivermectin (IVM) to cattle. Six commercial farms were involved: Farms 1 and 2 (IVM-susceptible nematode population) and Farms 3, 4, 5 and 6 (IVM-resistant nematode population). On each farm, forty-five calves naturally infected with gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes were randomly allocated into three groups (n = 15): untreated control, IVM SC administration, and IVM oral administration (both at 0.2 mg/kg). PK assessment (plasma and faeces) was performed on Farm 1. Efficacy was determined by Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test. IVM systemic availability upon SC administration (421 ± 70.3 ng·d/mL) was higher (P < 0.05) compared to the oral treatment (132 ± 31.3 ng·d/mL). However, higher (P < 0.05) faecal IVM concentrations were observed following oral treatment (9896 ± 1931 ng·d/mL) compared to SC administration (4760 ± 924 ng·d/mL). Similar (91-93%) IVM efficacy was observed on Farms 1 and 2 by both routes. Efficacy against resistant nematodes was slightly higher on Farms 3 and 4 after the oral (63 and 82%, respectively) compared to the SC (36 and 68%, respectively) treatment. However, there was complete therapeutic failure (0% efficacy) on Farm 5 and a very low response on Farm 6 (40 and 41% for SC and oral administration, respectively). Although larger faecal concentrations following IVM oral administration may increase drug exposure of GI adult worms, this does not always improve efficacy against resistant nematodes. The potential therapeutic advantages of oral treatments should be cautiously assessed, especially in presence of anthelmintic resistance.

Integrating ecosystem services into crop protection and pest management: Case study with the soil fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene and its use in tomato production in Italy

Ecosystems provide the conditions for producing food, regulating water, and providing wildlife habitats; these, among others, are known as ecosystem services (ESs). Food production is both economically and culturally important to southern European farmers, particularly in Italy where farmers grow flavorsome tomatoes with passion and pride. Growers rely on pesticides for crop protection, the potential environmental impact of which is often questioned by regulators and other stakeholders. The European regulatory system for the approval of pesticides includes a thorough evaluation of risks to the environment and is designed to be protective of ecosystems. The consideration of ESs in environmental decision making is a growing trend, and the present case study provides an example of how ESs evaluation could be used to enhance agricultural practices and regulatory policy for crop protection. By attacking plant roots, nematodes may affect the growth and yield of fruit and vegetable crops, and the income earned by farmers at harvest time. Available solutions include chemical treatments such as 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D), physical treatments (solarization), and biological treatments (biofumigation). In order to characterize the risks and benefits associated with the use of 1,3-D in crop protection, ESs and socioeconomic analyses were applied to its use in the control of nematodes in tomato cultivation in southern Italy. The present study confirmed the benefits of 1,3-D to tomato production in Italy, with significant positive effects on production yields and farm income when compared to limited and transient potential impacts on services such as soil function. Effect of selective anthelmintic treatments on health and production parameters in Pelibuey ewes during lactation

A study was conducted from December to April 2013, with the aim of evaluating a system of selective antiparasitic treatments using the FAMACHA© color chart compared with a conventional suppressive deworming system every 30 days in Pelibuey ewes during lactation. For the study, 54 ewes were used. They were randomly divided into two groups: FAMACHA and chemical treatments. The ewes in the first group received selective treatment depending on the ocular mucosa coloration (FAMACHA) and body condition score (BCS), while in the second group (chemical) all the animals remained under routine deworming every 30 days. Fecal nematode egg counts, proportion of third-stage trichostrongylid larvae, body condition, coloration of the ocular mucosa, and packed cell volume in the ewes were determined, while in lambs only body weight (BW) was recorded. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed in any of the studied variables between groups; however, the use of antiparasitic drugs was reduced during the experimental period in the FAMACHA group and no deaths of lambs or ewes were recorded. The results indicate that during the lactation of ewes, a strategy of selective treatments can be implemented without showing deterioration in major health and productive parameters of these animals.

Evaluation of 'best practice' (SCOPS) guidelines for nematode control on commercial sheep farms in England and Wales

Parasitic diseases are a major constraint to optimum livestock production and are the major cause of economic loss in UK sheep flocks, with farmers remaining dependant on anthelmintics for control. In the UK, research and evidence based, "best practice" guidelines for sustainable control of parasites in sheep (SCOPS) were first produced in 2004 and have been regularly updated since. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of these best practice guidelines for worm control on lamb production and infection levels, compared with more traditional management. Sixteen farms were selected based on a 2 cube factorial design with 3 factors known to affect worm epidemiology: control regimen; farm type; and climatic region. A formalised plan for worm control using 7 potential resistance-delaying practices was prepared for each of the 8 best practice (SCOPS) farms, in conjunction with the farms veterinarians. The 8 farms in the traditional management group (CONTROL farms) were selected based on ongoing evidence of them using worm control strategies deemed to be "higher-risk". A cohort of 40-50 study lambs at each farm was monitored from birth to finishing, allowing evaluation of lamb productivity, worm infection levels and for comparison of numbers of anthelmintic treatments. Birth and mid-season weights were used to calculate daily live-weight gain. Birth and finish dates were used to calculate time to finish and finish weights were also compared. Faecal egg counts, larval culture and species differentiation were undertaken throughout the year to assess the impact of the control strategies on worm burdens. There was no significant difference in results for any of the 3 production responses when comparing predicted means accounting for the differences in birth weight. In fact SCOPS farms had, on average, a higher daily weight gain and finish weight than CONTROL farms when comparing observed means. Statistical analysis of infection levels clearly showed no significant effect according to farm type (p=0.71) or treatment (p=0.81). In contrast the effect of region (p=0.08), although not significant, had a much larger effect size (standardised mean difference) with lower parasite burdens based on faecal egg counts on Northern farms compared to Southern farms. For both ewes and lambs, significantly fewer treatments were carried out on the SCOPS farms. The data collected from this study suggests that farms implementing SCOPS principles use less anthelmintic than other farms, without loss of animal performance or increased worm burden.

The management of anthelmintic resistance in grazing ruminants in Australasia--strategies and experiences

In many countries the presence of anthelmintic resistance in nematodes of small ruminants, and in some cases also in those infecting cattle and horses, has become the status quo rather than the exception. It is clear that consideration of anthelmintic resistance, and its management, should be an integral component of anthelmintic use regardless of country or host species. Many years of research into understanding the development and management of anthelmintic resistance in nematodes of small ruminants has resulted in an array of strategies for minimising selection for resistance and for dealing with it once it has developed. Importantly, many of these strategies are now supported by empirical science and some have been assessed and evaluated on commercial farms. In sheep the cost of resistance has been measured at about 10% of the value of the lamb at sale which means that losses due to undetected resistance far outweigh the cost of testing anthelmintic efficacy. Despite this many farmers still do not test for anthelmintic resistance on their farm. Many resistance management strategies have been developed and some of these have been tailored for specific environments and/or nematode species. However, in general, most strategies can be categorised as either; identify and mitigate high risk management practices, maintain an anthelmintic-susceptible population in refugia, choose the optimal anthelmintic (combinations and formulations), or prevent the introduction of resistant nematodes. Experiences with sheep farmers in both New Zealand and Australia indicate that acceptance and implementation of resistance management practices is relatively easy as long as the need to do so is clear and the recommended practices meet the farmer's criteria for practicality. A major difference between Australasia and many other countries is the availability and widespread acceptance of combination anthelmintics as a resistance management tool. The current situation in cattle and horses in many countries indicates a failure to learn the lessons from resistance development in small ruminants. The cattle and equine industries have, until quite recently, remained generally oblivious to the issue of anthelmintic resistance and the need to take pre-emptive action. In Australasia, as in other countries, a perception was held that resistance in cattle parasites would develop very slowly, if it developed at all. Such preconceptions are clearly incorrect and the challenge ahead for the cattle and equine industries will be to maximise the advantages for resistance management from the extensive body of research and experience gained in small ruminants.

Morphological comparison of meloidogyne males by scanning electron microscopy

Field plots of Tifton loamy sand were treated with methyl bromide, DD-MENCS, or ethoprop for control of root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne incognita, in a multiple cropping system of turnips, field corn, and southern peas. Annual applications of methyl bromide and DD-MENCS in November or December suppressed nematode numbers to very low levels through September, but numbers increased in the following October, November, and/or December. No benefit was found from ethoprop applied to DD-MENCS-treated plots before the planting of each crop. Nematode numbers were not significantly suppressed by ethoprop alone. Concentrations of ethoprop in the 0-15-cm soil layer were near 6 mug/g at application but were < 1mug/g of soil 5 days later on corn and southern peas and 30 days later on turnips. Ethoprop concentrations of 4.6 to 5.6 mug/g of soil are too low for adequate control of root-knot nematodes on field corn and southern peas in multiple cropping systems. Stepwise regression analyses indicated that 81% and 36% of the variations in concentration of ethoprop in the soil were attributable to the amount of water that the plots received when the maximum soil temperature ranged from 10 C to 19 C and from 31 C to 41 C, respectively, and that 11% was attributable to the maximum soil temperature within the temperature range of 17 C to 33 C.
