Kinetics of stearic acid destruction on TiO2 'self-cleaning' films revisited

The photocatalytic oxidation of stearic acid, SA, by O2 is a common test method used to assess the activity of new materials and underpins a standard test for self-cleaning activity. The kinetics of this process have been well-studied and are often interpreted using one of two simple models, which are revisited here in this overview. The first model is based on the common scenario of a SA layer on top of an all-photocatalyst layer which yields zero order kinetics, for which it is suggested that all the reaction sites are occupied by SA during the bulk of the photocatalytic process. An important, but rarely noted feature of this system is that the rate of SA removal depends directly upon the fraction of absorbed ultra-bandgap radiation, which suggests that the photocatalyst particles are extensively networked, thereby allowing the photogenerated electrons and holes to move rapidly and efficiently to the surface to effect the destruction of SA. The second kinetic model has been used to describe the first order kinetics of SA removal observed for mesoporous photocatalytic films comprised of isolated photocatalyst particles, in which the SA is inside (rather than on top) of the photocatalytic film, and is developed further here. It is shown that, contrary to previous reports, this model is not appropriate for porous photocatalytic films in which the particles are extensively networked, such as ones based on powders or sol-gel films, even though they too may exhibit decay kinetics where the order is > 0. The reason for the latter kinetics appears to be a distribution of reactivities through such films, i.e. high and low activity sites.

Biogeosciences Perspectives on Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) Science

This article is composed of three independent commentaries about the state of Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) principles in the American Geophysical Union Biogeosciences section, and discussion on the opportunities and challenges of adopting them. Each commentary focuses on a different topic: (a) Global collaboration, technology transfer, and application (Section 2), (b) Community engagement, community science, education, and stakeholder involvement (Section 3), and (c) Field, experimental, remote sensing, and real-time data research and application (Section 4). We discuss needs and strategies for implementing ICON and outline short- and long-term goals. The inclusion of global data and international community engagement are key to tackling grand challenges in biogeosciences. Although recent technological advances and growing open-access information across the world have enabled global collaborations to some extent, several barriers, ranging from technical to organizational to cultural, have remained in advancing interoperability and tangible scientific progress in biogeosciences. Overcoming these hurdles is necessary to address pressing large-scale research questions and applications in the biogeosciences, where ICON principles are essential. Here, we list several opportunities for ICON, including coordinated experimentation and field observations across global sites, that are ripe for implementation in biogeosciences as a means to scientific advancements and social progress.

ADSBET2: Automated Determination of Salt-Bridge Energy-Terms version 2

Component (bridge: ΔΔG_brd, background: ΔΔG_prot, desolvation: ΔΔG_dsolv) and net (ΔΔG_net) energy-terms of salt-bridge-structure (SBS) are auto-generated by the program ADSBET that makes use of general purpose Adaptive Poison Boltzmann Solver (APBS) method. While the procedure reports gross energy terms (Kcal Mol^-1), report on bond-multiplicity corrected normalized energyterms (Kcal Mol^-1 Bond^-1) along with their accessibility (ASA) in monomer, isolated-SBS (ISBS) and networked-SBS (NSBS) format would be very useful for statistical comparison among SBSs and understanding their location in protein structure. In this end, ADSBET2 potentially incorporates these features along with additional model for side-chain. Gross and normalized energy-terms are redirected in monomer, ISBS and NSBS format along with their ASA informations. It works on any number of SBSs for any number of structure files present in a database. Taken together, ADSBET2 has been suitable for statistical analyses of SBSs energetics and finds applications in protein engineering and structural bioinformatics.
