Abstract
Mayflies are typically negatively phototactic during larval development, whereas the adults possess positive phototaxis. However, no extensive research has been done into the wavelength dependence of phototaxis in any mayfly larvae. We measured the repellency rate of Ephoron virgo larvae to light as a function of wavelength in the 368-743 nm spectral range. We established that the magnitude of repellence increased with decreasing wavelength and the maximal responses were elicited by 400 nm violet light. This wavelength dependence of phototaxis is similar to the recently reported spectral sensitivity of positive phototaxis of the twilight-swarming E. virgo adults. Negative phototaxis not only facilitates predation evasion: avoidance of the blue-violet spectral range could also promote the larvae to withdraw towards the river midline in the case of a drop in the water level, when the underwater light becomes enriched with shorter wavelengths as a result of the decreasing depth of overhead river water.

Abstract
Developing sustainable control tools for managing noxious pests attacking stored foodstuffs is a timely research challenge. Acmella oleracea (L.) R. K. Jansen is a crop widely cultivated for its multiple usages on an industrial level. In this study, the extracts prepared with A. oleracea aerial parts were applied on wheat kernels for the management of eight important arthropod pests attacking stored products, i.e., Cryptolestes ferrugineus, Tenebrio molitor, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Trogoderma granarium, Tribolium castaneum, Tribolium confusum, Alphitobius diaperinus (adults/larvae), and Acarus siro (adults/nymphs). Extraction of A. oleracea was optimized on the base of the yield and content of spilanthol and other N-alkylamides which were analysed by HPLC-DAD-MS. Two concentrations of n-hexane or methanol extracts (500 ppm and 1000 ppm), obtained through Soxhlet extraction, were tested to acquire mortality data on the above-mentioned pests after 4, 8, and 16 h and 1 to 7 days of exposure. Both extracts achieved complete mortality (100.0%) of C. ferrugineus adults. In the case of A. diaperinus adults, mortalities were very low at any concentrations of both extracts. In general, the n-hexane extract was more efficient than methanol extract against almost all species and stages. Considering both extracts, the susceptibility order, from most to least susceptible species/stage, was C. ferrugineus adults > A. diaperinus larvae > C. ferrugineus larvae > T. granarium adults > T. molitor larvae > O. surinamensis adults > O. surinamensis larvae > T. confusum larvae > T. castaneum larvae > A. siro adults > T. molitor adults > A. siro nymphs > T. granarium larvae > T. castaneum adults > T. confusum adults > A. diaperinus adults. Our research provides useful knowledge on the efficacy of N-alkylamides-rich A. oleracea extracts as grain protectants, pointing out the importance of targeting the most susceptible species/ developmental stages.

Abstract
The family Fulgoridae belongs to the order Hemiptera, superfamily Fulgoridea, with approximately 770 described species worldwide. Their extraordinary appearance attracts the attention of both entomologists and the public. In addition to the evolutionary issue of their special appearance, certain species are also considered notorious pests (e.g., Lycorma delicatula). Several issues widely exist in previous taxonomic studies of lanternflies: (1) application of uncertain morphological characters leads to synonymy or misidentification; (2) descriptions of male genitalia are incomplete; (3) information of nymphal morphology is insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to provide a comprehensive taxonomic study of Fulgoridae from Taiwan. In this study, eight species in six genera from Taiwan were reported, of which Limois westwoodii was recorded for the first time from Taiwan. Lycorma olivacea was proposed as a new junior synonym of L. meliae. The fifth-instar nymph of Saiva formosana was described for the first time. Detailed descriptions of these lanternflies and an identification key to adults of Fulgoridae from Taiwan were also included.

Abstract
Nymphs of the hard tick Amblyomma americanum (L.) are an important life stage in the maintenance and transmission of tick-borne pathogens. As pathogen composition can vary across developmental cohorts, it is essential to understand the demographic structure of the questing population. Amblyomma americanum nymphs often display a second peak in activity during late summer, but it is unknown whether this peak represents older overwintered ticks or younger newly molted ticks. The objective of this study was to examine the heme concentration in field-captured A. americanum nymphs to determine if the questing population consists of one physiological cohort or multiple cohorts in a season. Ticks were collected from March to August in an old field of primarily non-native grasses, and heme concentration was used to assess physiological age. LOESS modeling depicted that heme concentration in the population declined from March to early July but increased in later sampling sessions. As ticks cannot replenish declining heme stores without a blood meal, a late-summer spike in heme concentration demonstrates that newly molted nymphs are entering the active population. The vector potential of these newly emerging nymphs may differ from those collected earlier in the year as pathogen diversity depends on reservoir host dynamics and timing of larval feeding.

Abstract
The active locomotion of ticks is directly associated with the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases, as it has important implications for the interaction of ticks with their hosts and their dispersion in the environment. In an attempt to elucidate the factors involved in the dispersion of Amblyomma sculptum, the present work aimed to characterize different aspects of the active locomotion of A. sculptum nymphs under laboratory conditions. To this end, nymphs were placed on a string at a 70° inclination and their walking activity was recorded daily along with their survival period. During their lifetime, ticks walked an average of 110 m. Their locomotion was not in a straight line and nymphs changed direction 142 times throughout their lifetimes. The mean distance walked per experimental day was 1.8 m, while the average walking distance before changing direction was 52 cm. The distance walked per experimental day reduced over time. The survival of ticks was affected by walking; resting nymphs survived for over 6 months, while the survival of those that walked daily was reduced to approximately 62 days. The results showed that A. sculptum nymphs were able to cover distances of over 100 m throughout their lifetimes, but they walked short distances at a time and constantly changed direction. This behavior indicates that ticks are not able to disperse over long distances by means of active locomotion.

Abstract
We confirm the presence of nymphs of the introduced pentastomid, Linguatula serrata, in the introduced rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, in Australia, based on morphological and molecular results. Two nymphs were collected from a single rabbit near the Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales. Unlike reports of nymphs from domestic animals, these nymphs were not encapsulated, despite having the morphological features of infective nymphs. The possibility of different development pathways in lagomorphs is discussed. Examination of feral deer for L. serrata was unsuccessful and potential reasons for a lack of infection in these animals are postulated. Our results reiterate the need for a combined morphological and molecular approach to the identification of L. serrata. Further sampling of a range of feral and native animals is required to determine the true range of intermediate hosts and their relative importance in the transmission of L. serrata in Australia.

Abstract
Dragonfly nymphs are aquatic and breathe water using a rectal gill. However, it has long been known that the nymphs of many species appear to possess the ability to breathe air, either during their final instar when they leave the water prior to metamorphosis, or during periods of aquatic hypoxia. The aerial gas exchange associated with these activities has not been quantified. This study used flow-through respirometry to measure the rate of aerial CO2 release (V̇CO2) from dragonfly nymphs as a proxy for their aerial gas exchange, both across development and in response to progressive aquatic hypoxia. It examined a total of four species from two families (Libellulidae and Aeshnidae). In both families, the late-final instar nymphs developed functional mesothoracic spiracles, allowing them to breathe air by positioning their head and thorax above the water's surface. While breathing air in this position, the nymphs could also ventilate their submerged rectal gill. Thus, during bimodal gas exchange in normoxic water, it was calculated that aeshnid nymphs expelled 39% of their respiratory CO2 into the air through their spiracles, while libellulid nymphs expelled 56% into the air. Decreasing the aquatic PO2 to 2.5 kPa and then below 1 kPa increased the proportion of respiratory CO2 expelled into the air from 69% to 100%, respectively. Thus, bimodally breathing late-final nymphs can vary how they partition gas exchange between their spiracles and their gill depending on aquatic PO2. Aeshnid nymphs of all developmental stages were also found to use their rectal gill as an air-breathing organ; pre-final nymphs performing 'surface skimming' while late final nymphs aspirated air bubbles directly into their gill's branchial basket. Mass-specific rates of aerial V̇CO2 also increased as the nymphs approached metamorphosis. These findings indicate that aeshnid nymphs are capable of accessing aerial O2 across development using their rectal gill as an air breathing organ, while the aquatic nymphs of both aeshnid and libellulid dragonflies undergo a progressive shift towards using the atmosphere for respiration as they approach metamorphosis.

Abstract
Haemaphysalis flava Neumann, 1897 (H. flava) is of public health significance due to its capability of transmitting several pathogens such as Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Bartonella and Francisella tularensis. However, lack of complete genome, transcriptome and proteome information limits the understanding of the biology of H. flava. Here, the total RNA of H. flava was collected separately at larvae and nymph stages and analyzed with high-throughput RNA sequencing technology. The obtained data were assembled and annotated based on the near origin species in the Nr database. The functions of the unigenes were annotated and classified by seven databases, including Nr, Nt, Pfam, KOG, Swiss-Prot, GO and KEGG. A total of 61,850,967 and 79,579,368 clean reads were obtained with a data bulk of 9.28 G and 11.94 G in larvae and nymph stages, respectively. The number of unigenes was 440,896, with 48.6% of them being matched to the Nr database and 51.4% remaining unknown. Additionally, 1,776,404 SNPs were identified in the unigenes. Differential analysis revealed 80 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 56 up-regulated genes and 24 down-regulated genes in the nymph versus larvae. qPCR confirmed 4 of the 56 up-regulated genes and 4 of the down-regulated genes. KEGG analysis of the DEGs showed that aldehyde dehydrogenase and sorbitol dehydrogenase, two up-regulated unigenes in nymph versus larvae, were both matched to the top three enriched pathways: "chloroalkane and chloroalkene degradation", "fatty acid degradation" and "glycolysis and gluconeogenesis". This is the first report on the whole transcriptome of H. flava at larvae and nymph stages. This study contributes to the understanding of H. flava at the gene expression level in different developmental stages and provides a theoretical basis for the development of vaccines against H. flava.

Abstract
The engorgement weights of laboratory-raised nymphs of five common ticks in the USA, Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum, Dermacentor andersoni, Dermacentor variabilis, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus, experimentally fed to repletion on an adult sheep (Ovis aries) were evaluated to determine the sex of molted adult ticks. Length of feeding period of nymphs, molting success and durations, and sex ratios between tick species were also compared. Individual replete nymphs were weighed and allowed to molt to adults in a humidity chamber. Length of feeding duration was different by species (F4,7785 = 1963.79; P < 0.0001); R. sanguineus nymphs became replete fastest, followed by A. americanum, D. variabilis, A. maculatum, and D. andersoni. Significant difference in molting success was not detected. The mean body weight of engorged nymphs of A. americanum (t = 32.3; df = 662), A. maculatum (t = - 9.70; df = 255), D. variabilis (t = 15.7; df = 751), and R. sanguineus (t = 5.17; df = 560; all P < 0.0001) molting into females was greater than that of nymphs molting into males, whereas heavier D. andersoni engorged nymphs became males (t = 8.71; df = 480; P < 0.0001). Amblyomma maculatum nymphs that molted to females fed to repletion faster (t = 3.33; df = 265; P ≤ 0.001) than nymphs that molted to males and a higher proportion (χ2 = 48.4; df = 1, P < 0.0001) of A. maculatum and D. andersoni (χ2 = 8.19; df = 1, P = 0.004) molted to females than males. Our study demonstrated biological and behavioral differences in and between engorging nymphs of five ixodid species. These findings may aid in studies evaluating the role of tick sex in transmission of tick-borne pathogens.

Abstract
Nasopharyngeal linguatuliasis known as Halzoun or Marrara syndrome occurs following ingestion of raw or undercooked viscera, including lymph nodes, liver and lung of infected animals. The present study was aimed to investigate the behavioral changes induced by ingestion of Linguatula serrata nymphs in rats. For this purpose, 24 rats were divided into four groups and orally ingested with 0 (control), 15, 30 and 60 L. serrata nymphs, respectively. Sneezing, mouth and tongue movements and mouth opening numbers were counted and the duration of mouth and nose grooming was measured at 10-min blocks for 30 min. Ingestion of 0 (normal saline) number of nymph produced negligible behaviors, whereas 15, 30 and 60 numbers of nymphs increased the above-mentioned behaviors when compared to normal saline (0 nymph) group. In this context, 60 number of nymphs produced more behavioral changes than 15 nymphs. We concluded that ingestion of L. serrata nymphs can produce behavioral changes in orofacial area in rats.

Abstract
This study assessed the parasitization of cavity-nesting birds and ground-nesting/foraging birds with larvae and nymphs of two Ixodes species, Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes arboricola. Totals of 679 (52.3%) I. ricinus and 619 (47.7%) I. arboricola ticks were collected from 15 species of passerine birds which were caught during the nesting and non-nesting periods of 2003-2006, in the south-eastern part of the Czech Republic, the Drahanská Vrchovina Uplands. In the non-nesting period from October to March, 6.8% (101/1492) of birds were infested with ticks, mainly with I. arboricola larvae. In the non-nesting period, the average intensity of infestation by I. arboricola and I. ricinus was 8.5 and 1.5 individuals per infested bird, respectively. In the nesting period from April to June, 21.6% (50/232) of birds were infested by both tick species but mainly with I. ricinus nymphs. The average intensity of infestation by I. ricinus and I. arboricola was 13.3 and 10.8 individuals per infested bird, respectively. Altogether, 23.2% of the infested birds were parasitized by both immature life stages of one or both tick species. From an enzootic perspective, co-feeding and co-infestation of I. ricinus and I. arboricola subadults on passerine birds might happen and may be important for the dissemination of tick-borne agents.

Abstract
Ticks are parasites that usually suck the blood of wild or domestic animals; rarely, they ingest human blood and spread various febrile infectious diseases along with skin problems. Out of 40 cases of tick bite reported in Korea, only 3 were caused by nymphal ticks, and tick bites by nymphal Amblyomma testudinarium have not been reported previously. Herein, we report a rare case of tick bite by nymphal A. testudinarium. A 57-year-old woman presented with an asymptomatic solitary erythematous nodule on the left thigh that had been present for 6 days. The tick, which the patient removed from the lesion and brought to the hospital, was identified as a nymphal A. testudinarium. Doxycycline (200 mg) was used as treatment, and after seven days of use, the patient improved and no other lesions were detected.

Abstract
This study was designed to provide more details about larva, first nymph, and second nymph of Ornithodoros savignyi using a combination of light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and partial sequence of mitochondrial 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA). The main characteristics of larva are wrinkled integument with many grooves, gnathosoma without camerostome cheeks, hypostome with a pair of large teeth apically, and tarsus without humps. The comparisons between the first and the second nymphs are different shape and distribution of dorsal grooves; a few spots without mammilla on the dorsal surface of the second nymph; 27 and 63-65 pairs of setae on the dorsal surface of the first and second nymphs, respectively; small holes on mammillae that are more dense in the second nymph; basis capitulum with two pairs of small setae in the second nymph; and one pair of sate in the first nymph, hypostome with dental formula 2/2 in the first nymph, and 3/3 in the second nymph. The partial 16S rRNA sequence of the second nymph that was determined as O. savignyi (450 bp) was deposited in GenBank under the accession number KU163242.

Abstract
Background Until recently, Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius, 1787) was considered to represent a single tick species in the New World. Recent studies have split this taxon into six species. While the A. cajennense species complex or A. cajennense (sensu lato) (s.l.) is currently represented by two species in Brazil, A. cajennense (sensu stricto) (s.s.) and Amblyomma sculptum Berlese, 1888, their geographical distribution is poorly known. Methods The distribution of the A. cajennense (s.l.) in Brazil was determined by morphological examination of all lots of A. cajennense (s.l.) in two large tick collections of Brazil, and by collecting new material during three field expeditions in the possible transition areas between the distribution ranges of A. cajennense (s.s.) and A. sculptum. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from the ITS2 rRNA gene was used to validate morphological results. Morphological description of the nymphal stage of A. cajennense (s.s.) is provided based on laboratory-reared specimens. Results From the tick collections, a total 12,512 adult ticks were examined and identified as 312 A. cajennense (s.s.), 6,252 A. sculptum and 5,948 A. cajennense (s.l.). A total of 1,746 ticks from 77 localities were collected during field expeditions, and were identified as 249 A. cajennense (s.s.), 443 A. sculptum, and 1,054 A. cajennense (s.l.) [these A. cajennense (s.l.) ticks were considered to be males of either A. cajennense (s.s.) or A. sculptum]. At least 23 localities contained the presence of both A. cajennense (s.s.) and A. sculptum in sympatry. DNA sequences of the ITS2 gene of 50 ticks from 30 localities confirmed the results of the morphological analyses. The nymph of A. cajennense (s.s.) is morphologically very similar to A. sculptum. Conclusion Our results confirmed that A. cajennense (s.l.) is currently represented in Brazil by only two species, A. cajennense (s.s.) and A. sculptum. While these species have distinct distribution areas in the country, they are found in sympatry in some transition areas. The current distribution of A. cajennense (s.l.) has important implications to public health, since in Brazil A. sculptum is the most important vector of the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, the etiological agent of Brazilian spotted fever. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the insecticidal effect of diatomaceous earth (DE) against adults and nymphs of Blattella germanica. METHODS This cross sectional study has been done on the laboratory strain of German cockroaches. Two stages, nymph and adult, were exposed to six dose rates of the DE, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 g/m(2), at 24, 48 and 72 h exposure period. Mortality (number of dead cockroaches) was assessed after 24 h. Other exposed specimens were transferred to the beakers contained food and water for counting the retard mortality rate after 1 week. RESULTS Increasing in dose rates of DE increased mortality rate, so that the lowest and highest mortality rates were observed in 2.5 and 25 g/m(2), respectively. The results of the statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the lethality of 50% of DE plus water on the German cockroach nymphs. CONCLUSIONS Due to the resistance of German cockroach against organochloride, organophosphorus, carbamate and pyrethriodes insecticides, it is suggested to use DE for insect's control.

Abstract
Hepatozoon canis is an apicomplexan parasite of dogs, which is known to become infected by ingesting Rhipicephalus sanguineus adult ticks. To investigate the possibility of H. canis transovarial and transstadial transmission from larvae to nymphs, engorged adult female ticks were collected from a private animal shelter in southern Italy, where H. canis infection is highly prevalent. Female ticks (n=35) and egg batches were tested by PCR for H. canis. All eggs examined were PCR-negative whereas 88.6% of females from the environment tested positive. Additionally, fed larvae (n=120) from a dog naturally infected by H. canis were dissected at different time points post collection (i.e. 0, 10, 20 and 30 days). Molted nymphs dissected at 20 days post collection revealed immature oocysts displaying an amorphous central structure in 50% of the specimens, and oocysts containing sporocysts with sporozoites were found in 53.3% of the nymphs dissected at 30 days post collection. This study demonstrates that H. canis is not transmitted transovarially, but it is transmitted transstadially from larvae to nymphs of R. sanguineus and develops sporozoites in oocysts that may infect dogs.

Abstract
Blood samples and ticks were collected from 100 shepherd dogs, 12 hunting dogs and 14 stray dogs in southern Hungary, in order to screen them for the presence of Hepatozoon spp. by PCR. Out of 126 blood samples, 33 were positive (26%). Significantly more shepherd dogs (31%) were infected, than hunting (8%) and stray dogs (7%). Three genotypes of Hepatozoon canis were identified by sequencing, differing from each other in up to six nucleotides in the amplified portion of their 18S rRNA gene. In Dermacentor marginatus larvae/nymphs and Dermacentor reticulatus nymphs, H. canis was present only if they had been collected from PCR-positive dogs, and the genotypes were identical in the ticks and their hosts. However, two Haemaphysalis concinna nymphs removed from a PCR-negative dog were found positive for H. canis, and the genotype detected in specimens of this tick species differed from that in the blood of their respective hosts. These results indicate that canine hepatozoonosis may be highly prevalent in regions where Rhipicephalus sanguineus is considered to be non-endemic. In addition, H. canis was identified for the first time in Hungary, as well as in D. marginatus, D. reticulatus and Ha. concinna ticks. Canine hepatozoonosis was significantly more prevalent west of the Danube river (where higher densities of red fox and golden jackal populations occur), suggesting a role of wild carnivores in its epidemiology.

Abstract
Linguatula serrata, well known as tongue worm; is an aberrant cosmopolitan parasite, which inhabits the canine respiratory system (final host). The discharged eggs infect many plant feeder animals including human causing visceral and nasopharyngeal linguatulosis which is known as "Marrara syndrome". In current study, the prevalence of infection with L. serrata nymphs in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) of slaughtered camels was investigated in Isfahan Province, Iran. The MLNs of 232 slaughtered camels, including 115 females and 117 males, were examined for L. serrata nymphs. Camels were categorized into four age groups, namely under six months, six months to two years, two to four years and greater than four years. Also, the morphometrics of the nymphs were measured using the classic parasitology methods. Results showed that 21.12% of examined camels were infected with L. serrata. Age and sex had no significant effect on the prevalence of this parasite in camels. The size of the different parts of nymphs' body were recorded and evaluated. The infection rate to the nymphs of parasite in hemorrhagic and black-colored lymph nodes were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher than the infection rate in normal-colored nodes. Also, results showed that in soft lymph nodes, the infection rate was significantly (P ≤ 0.05) more than those of normal and hard nodes. A high prevalence of infection in camels suggests possibility of similar high rate of infection in other animals, and people in the investigated area. This, in turn, emphasizes the need for more preventive measures to reduce the risk of zoonotic outbreaks.
