Long-term exposure to several constituents and sources of PM2.5 is associated with incidence of upper aerodigestive tract cancers but not gastric cancer: Results from the large pooled European cohort of the ELAPSE project

It is unclear whether cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) and gastric cancer are related to air pollution, due to few studies with inconsistent results. The effects of particulate matter (PM) may vary across locations due to different source contributions and related PM compositions, and it is not clear which PM constituents/sources are most relevant from a consideration of overall mass concentration alone. We therefore investigated the association of UADT and gastric cancers with PM2.5 elemental constituents and sources components indicative of different sources within a large multicentre population based epidemiological study. Cohorts with at least 10 cases per cohort led to ten and eight cohorts from five countries contributing to UADT- and gastric cancer analysis, respectively. Outcome ascertainment was based on cancer registry data or data of comparable quality. We assigned home address exposure to eight elemental constituents (Cu, Fe, K, Ni, S, Si, V and Zn) estimated from Europe-wide exposure models, and five source components identified by absolute principal component analysis (APCA). Cox regression models were run with age as time scale, stratified for sex and cohort and adjusted for relevant individual and neighbourhood level confounders. We observed 1139 UADT and 872 gastric cancer cases during a mean follow-up of 18.3 and 18.5 years, respectively. UADT cancer incidence was associated with all constituents except K in single element analyses. After adjustment for NO2, only Ni and V remained associated with UADT. Residual oil combustion and traffic source components were associated with UADT cancer persisting in the multiple source model. No associations were found for any of the elements or source components and gastric cancer incidence. Our results indicate an association of several PM constituents indicative of different sources with UADT but not gastric cancer incidence with the most robust evidence for traffic and residual oil combustion.

Insights on the combination of off-line and on-line measurement approaches for source apportionment studies

This paper presents a source apportionment study performed on a dataset collected at a trafficked site in Coimbra (Portugal) during the period December 2018-June 2019. The novelty of this work consists in the methodological approach used and the sensitivity study carried out to give hints to potential future applications. Indeed, a multi-time resolution and multi-parameter study was performed joining together aerosol data from 24-h chemically characterized samples and high-time resolution multi-wavelength absorption coefficients retrieved by an Aethalometer. A detailed sensitivity study on the most suitable combination of time resolution and uncertainties was carried out to obtain reliable physical and stable solutions over all analyses. In parallel, a regular EPA-PMF source apportionment study using chemical and optical variables averaged on 24 h is presented and discussed in comparison to the more complex multi-time and multi-parameter approach. Apart from results pertaining to the identification and relevance of different sources in Coimbra, the methodological results shown here can give guidance for readers who want to implement optical variables jointly with chemical ones in the same model run.

Seasonality of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Their Derivatives in PM2.5 from Ljubljana, Combustion Aerosol Source Apportionment, and Cytotoxicity of Selected Nitrated Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (NPAHs)

Airborne particulate matter (PM) is a vector of many toxic pollutants, including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives. Especially harmful is the fine fraction (PM_2.5), which penetrates deep into the lungs during inhalation and causes various diseases. Amongst PM_2.5 components with toxic potential are nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), knowledge of which is still rudimentary. Three of the measured NPAHs (1-nitropyrene (1-nP), 9-nitroanthracene (9-nA), and 6-nitrochrysene (6-nC)) were detected in ambient PM_2.5 from Ljubljana, Slovenia, along with thirteen non-nitrated PAHs. The highest concentrations of pollutants, which are closely linked with incomplete combustion, were observed in the cold part of the year, whereas the concentrations of NPAHs were roughly an order of magnitude lower than those of PAHs throughout the year. Further on, we have evaluated the toxicity of four NPAHs, including 6-nitrobenzo[a]pyrene (6-nBaP), to the human kidney cell line, HEK293T. The most potent was 1-nP (IC₅₀ = 28.7 µM), followed by the other three NPAHs, whose IC₅₀ was above 400 or 800 µM. According to our cytotoxicity assessment, atmospheric 1-nP is the most harmful NPAH among the investigated ones. Despite low airborne concentrations of NPAHs in ambient air, they are generally considered harmful to human health. Therefore, systematic toxicological assessment of NPAHs at different trophic levels, starting with cytotoxicity testing, is necessary in order to accurately evaluate their threat and adopt appropriate abatement strategies.

Assessment of the link between atmospheric dispersion and chemical composition of PM10 at 2-h time resolution

The concentration of air pollutants is governed by both emission rate and atmospheric dispersion conditions. The role played by the atmospheric mixing height in determining the daily time pattern of PM components at the time resolution of 2 h was studied during 21 days of observation selected from a 2-month field campaign carried out in the urban area of Rome, Italy. Natural radioactivity was used to obtain information about the mixing properties of the lower atmosphere throughout the day and allowed the identification of advection and stability periods. PM₁₀ composition was determined by X-ray fluorescence, ion chromatography, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and thermo-optical analysis. A satisfactory mass closure was obtained on a 2-h basis, and the time pattern of the PM₁₀ macro-sources (soil, sea, secondary inorganics, organics, traffic exhaust) was acquired at the same time scale. After a complete quality control procedure, 27 main components and source tracers were selected for further elaboration. On this database, we identified some groups of co-varying species related to the main sources of PM. Each group showed a peculiar behaviour in relation to the mixing depth. PM components released by soil, biomass burning and traffic exhaust, and, particularly, ammonium nitrate, showed a clear dependence on the mixing properties of the lower atmosphere. Biomass burning components and organics peaked during the night hours (around midnight), following the atmospheric stabilization and increased emission rate. Traffic exhausts and non-exhausts species also peaked in the evening, but they showed a second, minor increase between 6:00 and 10:00 when the strengthening of the emission rate (morning rush hour) was counterbalanced by the dilution of the atmosphere (increasing mixing depth). In the case of ammonium nitrate, high concentrations were kept during the whole night and morning.

Inhalation toxicity profiles of particulate matter: a comparison between brake wear with other sources of emission

Objective: There is substantial evidence that exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) from road traffic is associated with adverse health outcomes. Although it is often assumed to be caused by vehicle exhaust emissions such as soot, other components may also contribute to detrimental effects. The toxicity of fine PM (PM2.5; <2.5 µm mass median aerodynamic diameter) released from brake pads was compared to PM from other sources. Materials and methods: PM2.5 of different types of brake pads (low-metallic, semi-metallic, NAO and ECE-NAO hybrid), tires and road pavement, poultry as well as the combustion of diesel fuel and wood (modern and old-fashioned stove technologies) were collected as suspensions in water. These were subsequently aerosolized for inhalation exposures. Female BALB/cOlaHsd mice were exposed for 1.5, 3, or 6 hours by nose-only inhalation up to 9 mg/m³. Results: Neither cytotoxicity nor oxidative stress was observed after exposure to any of the re-aerosolized PM2.5 samples. Though, at similar PM mass concentrations the potency to induce inflammatory responses was strongly dependent on the emission source. Exposure to most examined PM2.5 sources provoked inflammation including those derived from the poultry farm, wear emissions of the NAO and ECE-NAO hybrid brake pads as well as diesel and wood combustion, as indicated by neutrophil chemoattractant, KC and MIP-2 and lung neutrophil influx. Discussion and conclusions: Our study revealed considerable variability in the toxic potency of brake wear particles. Understanding of sources that are most harmful to health can provide valuable information for risk management strategies and could help decision-makers to develop more targeted air pollution regulation.

Biomass burning contribution to PM10 concentration in Rome (Italy): Seasonal, daily and two-hourly variations

The possibility of a relevant contribution of biomass burning for domestic heating to PM₁₀ in the urban area of Rome was explored. The concentration of levoglucosan was determined for 31 months in Rome and in a nearby peri-urban area. During the cold season it reached several hundreds of ng/m³ at both sites, with a clear inverse relationship with air temperature. During the summer it remained well below 100 ng/m³. Although at the peri-urban station the concentration was about 50% higher than at the urban site, the two seasonal patterns show a very good agreement (R² = 0.95), pointing at a main contribution of biomass burning in both areas. Additional information came from the comparison of the 2-h time pattern of levoglucosan and the mixing conditions of the atmosphere, evaluated by monitoring natural radioactivity. During the summer levoglucosan concentration followed the pattern of natural radioactivity, indicating a contribution from many small sources scattered on a wide area (wildfires, barbecues, agricultural fires). During the heating season the activity of a source that switched in the early afternoon and switched off before midnight was highlighted. A 2-h delay between levoglucosan time patterns at the peri-urban and the urban site suggests that biomass burning mainly occurs outside Rome and the combustion products are then transported towards the city centre. Biomass burning contribution to PM₁₀ was estimated as 12% at the peri-urban site and 6.7% inside the city, with relevant implications for the health of the about 2.800.000 citizens living in the urban area of Rome.
