Effects of freeze-thaw cycling on the engineering properties of vegetation concrete

Vegetation concrete has been widely applied for the ecological restoration of bare steep slopes in short-term frozen and non-frozen soil regions in China. However, field experiments conducted in seasonally frozen soil regions have revealed decreases in the bulk density, nutrient content and vegetation coverage. This study aimed to clarify the evolution process and mechanism of the engineering properties of vegetation concrete under atmospheric freeze-thaw (F-T) test conditions. The physical, mechanical, and nutrient properties of vegetation concrete were investigated using six F-T cycles (0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20) and two initial soil water contents (18 and 22%). The results revealed decreases in the acoustic wave velocity and cohesive forces and an increase in the permeability coefficient of the vegetation concrete owing to F-T action. X-ray diffraction tests indicated that the decreased cohesive force was closely related to the overall decrease in the content of gelling hydration products in the vegetation concrete. Additionally, the contents of NH4+-N, PO43-P and K+ in the vegetation concrete increased, whereas that of NO3--N decreased. The loss rates of these soluble nutrients increased, indicating that the nutrient retention capacity of the vegetation concrete had decreased. Specifically, the decreased nutrient retention capacity was mainly related to the disintegration and fragmentation of larger aggregates due to F-T action. This study provides theoretical support for future research on improving the anti-freezing capability of ecological slope protection substrates in seasonally frozen soil regions.

Development of iron ore tailings based wood-cement composite panels

This article evaluated the effect of using mining waste on the mechanical, physical, thermal, and microstructural properties of cement-wood panels. The percentages of 10, 20, 30, and 40% were evaluated as replacing cement with mining waste. The wood particles of Pinus oocarpa were evaluated for their chemical, anatomical, and physical characteristics, and the mining waste was evaluated for its granulometry, chemical composition, and inhibition index. The composites were evaluated for their physical-mechanical properties, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy analysis, microstructural, thermal, and durability. All evaluated treatments met the requirements of the Bison standard for MOR and MOE for static bending and internal bonding, even after accelerated aging. It was possible to conclude that it is feasible to replace 40% of cement with mining waste for the production of cement-wood panels in industrial scale.

Assessing energy balance via seismic and mechanical observations in high temperature induced crack damage in marbles

Assessing the rock physical and mechanical behavior under different temperatures has become of utmost importance. It is well known that thermal stresses induce significant crack damage in rocks due to thermal expansion or phase transformation and volume changes. Quantifying and forecasting the evolution of rock physical and mechanical parameters with temperature is thus crucial for evaluating rock integrity in many applications such as geothermal fields, nuclear waste storage, wildfire or volcanic processes. In marbles the degree of previous exposure to temperature and the chemical composition (i.e. calcite vs dolomite) plays a key role for controlling the mechanical evolution under temperature. Moreover separating out the energy contribution provided by anelastic processes driving crack damage and elastic reversible deformation under increasing temperature remains an open challenge. With these aims, three sample sets of marbles with different contents of calcite and dolomite from two Brazilian quarries were tested under different temperature conditions (from room temperature up to 600 °C). A marked increase of thermal cracking was observed after 400 °C, accompanying mass loss up to 1% and porosity increase. Moreover, a significant drop in seismic wave velocities, uniaxial compressive strength and electrical resistivity, in wet conditions, was also detected. Spectral behavior from seismic traces and energy dissipation from stress-strain curves were analyzed. A dominance of the dissipated energy compared to the elastic one was observed and related to the generation of new fracturing surfaces. This hypothesis was supported by the spectral behavior showing multiple scattering effects in the high frequency components, with an increase in attenuation. The results suggested that the percentage of dolomite has a high influence on the mechanical behavior even at low temperature, mirroring the prevalence of brittle processes in dolomitic marbles. This study represents a comprehensive benchmark for the study of effect of temperature on rocks because of its multidisciplinary and multimethod approach and the demonstrated sensitivity to subtle textural changes. Moreover, it provides a reliable tool for crack damage analysis at each thermal stress.

Cardanol-based adhesive with reduced formaldehyde emission to produce particleboards with waste from bean crops

Free formaldehyde is a carcinogen whose emission reduction in particleboard has been studied recently to mitigate this environmental and human health problem. One alternative to reduce the emission of formaldehyde in particleboards is by using adhesives produced from natural sources. Cardanol-formaldehyde is an environmentally friendly adhesive made with cashew nut liquid, a byproduct from the cashew chain. This work aimed to produce particleboard using cardanol-formaldehyde in place of urea. In addition, different proportions of bean straw wastes were used to replace pine wood. The combination of eco-friendly adhesive and lignocellulosic waste particles could result in a product that meets market demands while being environmentally nonaggressive. Cardanol-formaldehyde promoted a higher modulus of elasticity (MOE) (1172 MPa) and modulus of rupture (MOR) (4.39 MPa) about panels glued with urea-formaldehyde, which presented a MOE of 764 MPa and MOR of 2.45 MPa. Furthermore, the cardanol-formaldehyde adhesive promoted a 93% reduction in formaldehyde emission, with a reduction from 16.76 to 1.09 mg/100 g oven-dry board for particleboards produced with cardanol-formaldehyde, indicating potential as an adhesive in the particleboard industry.

Lignocellulosic materials as soil-cement brick reinforcement

The need for environmental preservation requires civil engineering to reach new concepts and technical solutions aiming at the sustainability of its activities and products. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of using different types and percentages of vegetable particles on the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of soil-cement bricks. Bamboo, rice husk, and coffee husk particles at 1.5 and 3% percentages and a control treatment not using the particle were evaluated. The chemical properties, shrinkage, compaction, consistency limits, and grain size were characterized for the soil; and the anatomical, chemical, and physical properties for the lignocellulosic particles. The bricks were produced using an automatic press and characterized after the curing process for density, water absorption, porosity, loss of mass by immersion, compressive strength, durability, and thermal conductivity. The increase in the lignocellulosic waste percentage caused a mechanical strength decrease and bricks' porosity and water absorption increase. However, it caused a decrease in density and an enhancement in loss of mass and thermal insulation properties. The bricks produced with rice husk obtained the best results in terms of mechanical and thermal properties, and were still among the best treatments for physical properties, standing out among the lignocellulosic waste as an alternative raw material source for soil-cement brick production.

Effects of impulse-cyclone drying and silane modification on the properties of wood fiber/HDPE composite material

Poplar fibers were pretreated under impulse-cyclone drying (ICD) and further modified by different types of silane with special chemical structures. The effects of ICD-assisted silane modification on the properties of wood plastic composites (WPCs) were investigated. The main findings indicated that the number of hydroxyl groups and the polarity of the fibers decreased after the ICD/silane co-modification, whereas the hydrophobicity and crystallinity of fibers, the compatibility and adhesion strength between fibers and plastics, and the mechanical properties, thermostability, and dynamic mechanical properties of WPCs were significantly improved. In this study, when the wood fibers were only modified by silane and the silane content was 5%, the WPCs had better properties, and the WPCs modified with vinyl tri-methoxysilane (A-171) had the best properties. Furthermore, the addition of a small amount of silane to the wood fibers modified by ICD provided even better physical and mechanical properties compared to those of the WPCs that were only modified by silane; when 3% silane was added, there were increases of 10.67%, 10.22% and 9.4%, in the tensile, flexural and impact strengths, respectively, and an increase of 6.84% in the contact angle of the composites. The water absorption rate of the composite significantly decreased as well.

Clinical and laboratory evaluation of microstructural changes in the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of dental filling materials under the influence of an electromagnetic field

Restorative filling materials used for dental caries prevention and treatment consist of various components including monomers or oligomers, which play a significant role in forming the main structure of these materials, as well as in characterising their physical, mechanical and chemical properties. The necessity for the development and improvement of structural characteristics of polymeric dental filling materials intended for caries prevention and their life duration increase served as the initiating factor of our research. According to the research purpose and challenges, we studied the changes in the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of composite filling materials with and without electromagnetic field influence. The investigations in vivo include the study of microstructural features of polymeric filling materials by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the investigations in vitro include the study of sealed and extracted human teeth chips by using X-ray spectral analysis. We also evaluated the changes in the strength characteristics of dental filling materials with and without electromagnetic field influence. The analysis of the obtained data indicates the presence of structural changes in polymeric dental filling materials, including the material microstructure condensation confirmed by the SEM results, an increase in the strength and adhesion characteristics and certain regularities of the chemical elemental composition concentration change in the area of hard tooth tissue and dental filling material. These scientific data will provide tooth caries prevention and promote the increase of treatment quality.

Data on the physical and mechanical properties of soilcrete materials modified with metakaolin

During the last decades eco-friendly, low-cost, sustainable construction materials for utilization in civil engineering projects have attracted much attention. To this end, soilcretes are non-conventional construction materials produced by mixing natural soil such as natural clay or limestone sand with a hydraulic binder and are recently under detailed and in-depth investigation by many researchers. In this paper the results of the physical and mechanical characteristics of a large set of cylindrical specimens under uniaxial compression, are presented. Specifically, two types of soils such as sand and clay with metakaolin as a mineral additive have been used. This database can be extremely valuable for better understanding of the behavior of soilcrete materials. Furthermore, the results presented herein expected to be of great interest for researchers who deal with the prediction of mechanical properties of materials using soft computing techniques such as artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.

Physical and mechanical properties of PLA, and their functions in widespread applications - A comprehensive review

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), so far, is the most extensively researched and utilized biodegradable aliphatic polyester in human history. Due to its merits, PLA is a leading biomaterial for numerous applications in medicine as well as in industry replacing conventional petrochemical-based polymers. The main purpose of this review is to elaborate the mechanical and physical properties that affect its stability, processability, degradation, PLA-other polymers immiscibility, aging and recyclability, and therefore its potential suitability to fulfill specific application requirements. This review also summarizes variations in these properties during PLA processing (i.e. thermal degradation and recyclability), biodegradation, packaging and sterilization, and aging (i.e. weathering and hygrothermal). In addition, we discuss up-to-date strategies for PLA properties improvements including components and plasticizer blending, nucleation agent addition, and PLA modifications and nanoformulations. Incorporating better understanding of the role of these properties with available improvement strategies is the key for successful utilization of PLA and its copolymers/composites/blends to maximize their fit with worldwide application needs.

Use of recycled plastics in wood plastic composites - a review

The use of recycled and waste thermoplastics has been recently considered for producing wood plastic composites (WPCs). They have great potential for WPCs manufacturing according to results of some limited researches. This paper presents a detailed review about some essential properties of waste and recycled plastics, important for WPCs production, and of research published on the effect of recycled plastics on the physical and mechanical properties of WPCs.

Polymer grafted hydroxyapatite whisker as a filler for dental composite resin with enhanced physical and mechanical properties

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of surface graft polymerization of hydroxyapatite whisker (HW) on physical and mechanical properties of dental composite resin. Poly bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate (Poly(Bis-GMA)) was grafted onto silanized hydroxyapatite whisker (SHW) via solution polymerization and the amount of the Poly(Bis-GMA) on the surface was effectively controlled by polymerization time. The obtained poly(Bis-GMA) grafted hydroxyapatite whisker (PGHW) with different polymer contents was filled into a resin matrix respectively, meanwhile the composites with HW and with SHW served as controls. Monomer conversion was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and volume shrinkage of the composite resin was measured with a density tester. Mechanical properties were tested with a universal testing machine. The results indicated that the composite filled with PGHW-1h (graft ratio of poly(Bis-GMA): 8.5 wt.%) showed lower shrinkage and better mechanical properties, improving flexural strength by 6.5% and 11.9% compared with SHW filled composite and HW filled composite, respectively. However, PGHW with higher graft ratios aggregated seriously and formed defects in the composite, leading to deterioration of mechanical properties. It was revealed that the poly(Bis-GMA) on the surface of PGHW acted as a functional transition layer and enhanced interfacial compatibility and interaction between whisker and resin matrix, which facilitated the dispersion of PGHW in the composite and decreased the composite shrinkage. Thus, the graft polymerization of Bis-GMA on the surface of filler might be a promising modification method for the fabrication of dental materials.
