Blind Trading: A Literature Review of Research Addressing the Welfare of Ball Pythons in the Exotic Pet Trade

The Ball python is a small species that is commonly kept as an exotic pet across the world. Despite huge numbers of these snakes being kept and traded in the pet industry, there is very little information available about how catching, breeding, transporting and housing them in captivity could impact their welfare. Our study reviewed the published literature for this species and found 88 relevant peer-reviewed scientific papers. Physical health was the predominant focus of research, with numerous studies reporting on disease, injury or clinical treatments. Far fewer papers focused on other aspects of Ball python wellbeing, including behaviour, nutrition, environment or mental condition. We also found that very few studies focused on wellbeing prior to pet ownership, i.e., during the early stages of the trade chain when they are caught from the wild, transported, or bred in captivity. We recommend that more research is needed to assess the impact of the exotic pet trade on this species’ welfare. In particular, research on welfare conditions during capture and transportation of wild Ball pythons, and the potential effects of captive breeding, could help reduce suffering throughout the trade.

Abstract

Extensive numbers of Ball pythons are caught, bred, traded and subsequently kept in captivity across the world as part of the exotic pet industry. Despite their widespread availability as pets, relatively little is known about the potential welfare challenges affecting them. We reviewed the literature for research focused on the health and welfare of Ball pythons in the international pet trade. From a total of 88 articles returned from the search criteria, our analysis showed that very few actually focused on trade (10%) or animal welfare (17%). Instead, the majority (64%) of articles focused on veterinary science. There was a considerable bias towards physical health, with most studies neglecting the four other domains of animal welfare (behaviour, nutrition, environment and mental health). Furthermore, very few studies considered Ball pythons prior to resulting pet ownership, during wild capture and transportation or captive breeding operations. Our review demonstrates that our current understanding of welfare for Ball pythons traded as exotic pets is limited. We recommend that future research should focus on aspects of the industry that are currently overlooked, including the potential consequences of genetic selection during captive-breeding and the conditions provided for snakes prior to and during international transportation.

TWO-DIMENSIONAL ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC MEASUREMENTS IN THE BALL PYTHON (PYTHON REGIUS)

Reptiles can suffer from infectious and noninfectious cardiac pathologies, requiring the need for standardized diagnostic approaches and reference intervals. Despite the popularity of ball pythons (Python regius) as pets, echocardiographic measurements are unknown in this species. Twenty healthy adult ball pythons were evaluated to identify imaging planes, establish reference intervals for cardiac assessment by two-dimensional echocardiography, and study the effects of sex, body length, and body mass on heart rate, fractional shortening, and vascular, atrial, and ventricular dimensions. Echocardiography was performed under manual restraint. Most cardiac measurements were positively correlated with body length and mass, with the strongest correlation between ventricular end-systolic measurements and body length. The only significant difference found between sexes was for right and left atrial lengths. This study provides guidelines and reference intervals for two-dimensional echocardiographic measurements in adult healthy ball pythons.

Two-dimensional and doppler echocardiographic evaluation in twenty-one healthy Python regius

Echocardiographic evaluation is a diagnostic tool for the in vivo diagnosis of heart diseases. Specific and unique anatomical characteristics of the ophidian heart such as the single ventricular cavity, a tubular sinus venosus opening into the right atrium, the presence of three arterial trunks and extreme mobility in the coelomic cavity during the cardiac cycle directly affect echocardiographic examination. Twenty‐one awake, healthy ball pythons (Python regius) were analysed based on guidelines for performing echocardiographic examinations. Imaging in the sagittal plane demonstrated the caudal vena cava, sinus venosus valve (SVV) and right atrium and the various portions of the ventricle, horizontal septum, left aortic arch and pulmonary artery. Transverse imaging depicted the spatial relationship of the left and right aortic arches, the pulmonary artery and the horizontal septum. Basic knowledge of cardiac blood flow in reptiles is necessary to understand the echocardiographic anatomy. The flow of the arterial trunks and SVV was analysed using pulsed‐wave Doppler based on the approach used for humans and companion mammals. The walls and diameters of the cavum arteriosum, cavum venosum and cavum pulmonale were also evaluated. This study should improve the veterinarian's knowledge of ophidian heart basal physiology and contribute to the development of cardiology in reptiles.

Snake spectacle vessel permeability to sodium fluorescein

OBJECTIVE

Assess vascular permeability of the snake spectacle to sodium fluorescein during resting and shedding phases of the ecdysis cycle.

Ball python (Python regius).

PROCEDURES

The snake was anesthetized, and spectral domain optic coherence tomography was performed prior to angiographic procedures. An electronically controlled digital single-lens reflex camera with a dual-head flash equipped with filters suitable for fluorescein angiography was used to make images. Sodium fluorescein (10%) solution was administered by intracardiac injection. Angiographic images were made as fluorescein traversed the vasculature of the iris and spectacle. Individually acquired photographic frames were assessed and sequenced into pseudovideo image streams for further evaluation CONCLUSIONS: Fluorescein angiograms of the snake spectacle were readily obtained. Vascular permeability varied with the phase of ecdysis. Copious leakage of fluorescein occurred during the shedding phase. This angiographic method may provide diverse opportunities to investigate vascular aspects of snake spectacle ecdysis, dysecdysis, and the integument in general.

A Case of Submandibular Leiomyosarcoma, Mimicking an Abscess, in a Ball Python (Python regius)

A two-year-old ball python with a submandibular mass was evaluated. Fine needle aspiration resulted in debris containing purulent materials and bacterial cells on cytology. Radiography demonstrated multi-focal radiopaque lesions in the mass, which were suspected to be mineralization; there was an absence of mandibular invasion or lung involvement. Gross examination of the surgically excised mass revealed a multi-nodular, well-circumscribed lesion with purulent material. The postoperative recovery was uneventful. The histopathological examination followed by immunohistochemistry analysis gave a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. As tumors containing purulent materials can be confused with an abscess, diagnostic confirmation with various diagnostical tools should be considered.

Assessing Potential Reservoir of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in the Oral Microbiota of Captive Burmese and Royal Pythons

The oral microbiota has a diversity of microorganisms that together maintain the homeostasis of the oral cavity. Disruptions in the balance of these microbial populations can lead to the development of oral and dental diseases. To characterize the normal oral microbiota of captive ophidians, samples were obtained from the oral cavity of eight Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) and 11 royal pythons (Python regius), using oral swab, during routine evaluations. In the Laboratory-Antimicrobials, Biocides and Biofilms Unit at University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, the identification and antimicrobial susceptibility profile was determined using the Vitek® 2 Compact automated device (bioMérieux, Marcy-l'Étoile, France). Of the 106 bacterial isolates obtained, 69% were Gram-negative species and 31% were Gram-positive bacteria. The genus Pseudomonas was the most frequently isolated. Chryseobacterium indologenes, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the most isolated species. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that the phenotypic resistance was highest for nitrofurans (47.2%), beta-lactams (45.8%) and sulfonamides (30.6%). Twenty-one multidrug-resistant isolates (58.3%) were identified with Acinetobacter baumannii, Serratia plymuthica, Chryseobacterium indologenes, Providencia rettgeri and Pseudomonas aeruginosa showing the highest resistance frequencies.

Genome Report: First whole genome assembly of Python regius (ball python), a model of extreme physiological and metabolic plasticity

The study of nontraditional model organisms, particularly those exhibiting extreme phenotypes, offers unique insights into adaptive mechanisms of stress response and survival. Snakes, with their remarkable physiological, metabolic, and morphological adaptations, serve as powerful models for investigating these processes. Pythons are a unique model organism that have been studied for their extreme metabolic and physiological plasticity. To date, the Burmese python (Python bivittatus) is the only member of the Pythonidae family to have been sequenced. The low contiguity of this genome and rising challenges in obtaining Burmese pythons for study prompted us to sequence, assemble, and annotate the genome of the closely related ball python (Python regius). Using a hybrid sequencing approach, we generated a 1.45 Gb genome assembly with a contig N50 greater than 18 Mb and a BUSCO score of 98%, representing the highest quality genome to date for a member of the Pythonidae family. This assembly provides a valuable resource for studying snake-specific traits and evolutionary biology. Furthermore, it enables exploration of the molecular mechanisms underlying the remarkable cardiac and muscular adaptations in pythons, such as their ability to rapidly remodel organs following feeding and resist muscular atrophy during prolonged fasting. These insights have potential applications in human health, particularly in the development of therapies targeting cardiac hypertrophy and muscular atrophy.
