Measuring nursing movements using real time tracking data at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospital Trust

BACKGROUND

Real time location systems (RTLS) are increasingly used in healthcare with applications that include contract tracing and staffing. However, their potential to provide organizational insights requires staff compliance with the system.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Our goal is to assess how many nurses are using the RTLS correctly (i.e. complying to the system). We collect RTLS data on the movements of nurses at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. We identify the number of RTLS active nurses and compare it to what expected from the nurses' rotas.

RESULTS

We find that a significant number of nurses appear not to be active from the RTLS data. For approximately 15% of the active users, RTLS records below 10 movements per day. Nevertheless, most of the active users have daily RTLS times consistent with the average shift length.

CONCLUSION

Applications of RTLS data may need to account for imperfect compliance of staff to the system.

Development of radio-frequency identification (RFID) sensors suitable for smart-monitoring applications in sewer systems

Sanitary and stormwater sewers are buried assets that play important roles in the prevention of diseases and the reduction of health risks for our societies. Due to their hidden nature, these assets are not frequently assessed and maintained to optimal conditions. The lack of maintenance can cause sewer blockages and overflows that result in the release of pathogens into the environment. For cities, monitoring sewer conditions on a large-scale can be costly, time-consuming, and labor-intensive if using current low-throughput technologies, such as dye testing or closed-circuit television. Alternatively, smart sensor systems can provide low-cost, high-throughput, and automatic data-driven features for real-time monitoring applications. In this study, we developed ultrahigh-frequency radio-frequency identification (UHF RFID)-based sensors that are flushable and suitable for sanitary and stormwater pipes quick surveys. 3D printed RFID sensors were designed to float at the water-air interface and minimize the water interference to RF signal communications. The optimal detection range was also determined to support the design and installation of the reader in various utility holes. Field trials demonstrated that the UHF RFID system is a low-cost, high-throughput, and robust solution for monitoring blockage, illicit-connection, and water flow in sewer networks.

Hospital Real-Time Location System (A Practical Approach in Healthcare): A Narrative Review Article

BACKGROUND

The Hospital Real-time Location Systems (HRTLS), deal with monitoring the patients, medical staff and valuable medical equipment in emergency situations. Therefore, the study aimed to propose Hospital Real-Time Location Systems based on the novel technologies in Iran.

METHODS

In this narrative-review, the articles and official reports on HRTLS, were gathered and analyzed from related textbooks and indexing sites with the defined keywords in English or Persian. The search of databases such as IDTechEx, IEEE, PubMed Central, Science Direct, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, Scopus, Web of Science, Elsevier journals, WHO publications and Google Scholar was performed to reconfirm the efficiency of HRTLS from 2006 to 2017.

RESULTS

Various technologies have been used in the current systems, which have led to the reduced error rate, costs and increased speed of providing the healthcare services. Applications of these systems include tracking of patient's, medical staff and valuable medical assets. Besides, achieving the patient & staff satisfaction is among other basic applications of these Systems. The accurate data exchange and processes control are considered as positive aspects of this technology.

CONCLUSION

HRTLS has great importance in healthcare systems and its efficiency in medical centers is reliable; hence, it seems necessary to determine the organization's requirements, apply novel technologies such as cloud computing and Internet of things, and integrate them to get access to maximum advantages in Iranian healthcare centers.
