A study on the relationship between recreational physical activity and audiovisual difficulty for older adults

Audiovisual difficulty are especially common in older adults. Audiovisual difficulty seriously affect the quality of life of older adults in their later years. It is a top priority to find out the related factors, and to intervene and prevent them. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between recreational physical activities and audiovisual difficulty in older adults. We hope that older adults can reduce the risk of hearing and visual difficulty through scientific physical activity. A total of 4,886 people were sampled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2013 to 2018. Recreational physical activity was assessed through the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ); Hearing and visual difficulty were assessed using the Disability Questionnaire (DLQ). Chi-square test was used for categorical variables and rank sum test was used for measurement variables. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant (bilateral test). After univariate analysis, binary Logistic regression analysis was performed with recreational physical activity as the independent variable, statistically significant demographic variable as the covariate, and hearing and visual difficulty as the dependent variable, respectively. (1) After excluding all confounding variables, recreational physical activity was significantly associated with hearing difficulty (P < 0.001), odds ratio (OR) 0.657 (95% CI 0.5899-0.733); (2) Recreational physical activity was significantly associated with visual difficulty (P < 0.001), OR 0.731 (95% CI 0.630-0.849). (1) Recreational physical activity is the protective factor of hearing difficulty in older adults; (2) Recreational physical activity is a protective factor for visual difficulty in older adults.

Retirement status and physical activity in US adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: Influence of sex, race/ethnicity and acculturation level

AIMS

We aimed to assess the association between retirement status and recreational physical activity (rPA) in US adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), while accounting for potential modification effects.

METHODS

We extracted data from the 2007-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We used logistic regression models to evaluate the association between self-reported retirement status and high rPA (i.e., at least 150 min/week). We reported adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). We estimated the modification effect of sex, race/ethnicity, and acculturation level by including interaction terms into the models.

RESULTS

Of the 992 U.S. adults with T2DM, 34.8% was retired. As a whole, retirement was associated with high rPA (aOR=1.87 [95% CI: 1.16-3.00]; P = 0.0110). Retirement was associated with high odds of rPA in females (aOR=2.07 [95% CI, 1.14, 3.73], P = 0.0171), in non-Hispanic whites (aOR=2.57 [95% CI, 1.32, 5.00], P = 0.0062), and in those with high acculturation level (aOR=1.85 [95% CI, 1.07, 3.19], P = 0.0273). We observed no significant statistical interactions.

CONCLUSIONS

Retirement is associated with a high participation to rPA in US adults with T2DM, and the amplitude varies by sex, race/ethnicity and acculturation level. Intervention for improving rPA in adults with T2DM should collect and consider information on retirement status.

Long-Term Physical Activity and Body Composition After Exercise and Educational Programs for Breast Cancer: A Randomized Controlled Trial From the Setouchi Breast Project-10

BACKGROUND

It is unclear what interventions can sustain long-term higher physical activity (PA) to improve breast cancer outcomes. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of interventions on PA after breast cancer treatment.

METHODS

This was a prospective randomized controlled trial for patients with stage 0 to III breast cancer evaluating the efficacy of exercise and educational programs on long-term PA compared with usual care. The primary endpoint was proportion of patients with recreational PA (RPA) ≥5 metabolic equivalents (METs)/week at 1 year after registration.

RESULTS

From March 16, 2016, to March 15, 2020, breast cancer patients were registered in the control (n = 120), education (n = 121), or exercise (n = 115) group. There were no significant differences in proportion of RPA ≥5 METs/week at 1 year between the exercise and control groups (54% and 53%, P = .492) and between the education and control groups (62% and 53%, P = .126). Significant difference in reductions from baseline at 1 year were noted on body weight (P = .0083), BMI (P = .0034), and body fat percentage (P = .0027) between education and control groups. Similarly, the exercise group showed significant difference in reduction in body fat percentage (P = .0038) compared to control group.

CONCLUSION

Although there were no significant effects on RPA 1 year after exercise and educational programs for breast cancer survivors, both interventions reduced body composition. Future studies on PA should investigate appropriate interventions to improve overall survival.

Recreational physical activity reduces breast cancer recurrence in female survivors of breast cancer: A meta-analysis

PURPOSE

The aim of this review was to systematically collect the published evidence to assess the effect of recreational physical activity (PA) in reducing breast cancer (BC) recurrence in female survivors.

METHODS

A bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed Medline, CINAHL Complete, Scopus and Lilacs until June 2021. We selected observational studies or clinical trials comprising women diagnosed with BC, in which the risk of recurrence of BC was measured before or after performing recreational PA. As a secondary outcome, we analyzed disease free survival for recurrence/disease-specific mortality. The methodological quality of observational studies was assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and clinical trials with the PEDro scale. A random effects model was used to estimate the relative risks (RR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) to infer the results for any female survivor of BC. We performed separate meta-analyses for prediagnosis and postdiagnosis recreational PA.

RESULTS

Eleven studies were included, providing data from 29,677 surviving women with BC with an age range of 18-79 years old. Postdiagnosis recreational PA reduced the risk of BC recurrence by 16% (RR, 0.84; 95% CI: 0.78 to 0.91) and the risk of recurrence/disease-specific mortality by 23% (RR, 0.77; 95% CI: 0.66 to 0.93). Prediagnosis PA reduced the risk of BC by 18% (RR, 0.82; 95% CI: 0.74 to 0.91).

CONCLUSION

This systematic review with meta-analysis shows that recreational PA can be an interesting therapeutic tool to protect against recurrence of BC in female survivors.

Recreational and occupational physical activity in relation to prostate cancer aggressiveness: the North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project (PCaP)

PURPOSE

To examine associations between recreational and occupational physical activity and prostate cancer aggressiveness in a population-based, case-only, incident prostate cancer study.

METHODS

Data were analyzed from the cross-sectional North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project of African-American (n = 1,023) and European-American (n = 1,079) men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer (CaP). High-aggressive CaP was defined as Gleason sum ≥ 8, or prostate-specific antigen > 20 ng/ml, or Gleason sum ≥ 7 and clinical stage T3-T4. Metabolic equivalent tasks (MET) were estimated from self-reported recreational physical activity in the year prior to diagnosis assessed retrospectively via a validated questionnaire and from occupational physical activity based on job titles. Associations between physical activity variables and high-aggressive prostate cancer were estimated using logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for multiple confounders.

RESULTS

There was suggestive evidence that walking for 75-150 min/week for exercise is associated with lower odds of high-aggressive prostate cancer compared to no walking (OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.47-1.01). Physical activity at the current job was associated with 24% lower odds of high-aggressive prostate cancer (highest vs. lowest tertile OR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.56-1.04). However, total MET-h/week of recreational physical activity and accumulation of high-level physical activity at the longest-held job were not associated with high-aggressive prostate cancer. Results did not vary by race.

CONCLUSIONS

The odds of high-aggressive prostate cancer were lower among men who walk for exercise and those engaged in occupations with high activity levels.

Relationship between physical activity, lean body mass, and bone mass in the Mexican adult population

We evaluated the association between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), bone mineral content (BMC), and lean mass (LM) in whole body (wb) and limbs of the Mexican adult population. Our results demonstrate that some types of LTPA with relatively high/medium impact on bones such as football, basketball, tennis, and weightlifting improve BMC and LM.

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of different kinds of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) on bone mass values and its association with lean mass (LM) in the whole body (wb) and limbs of a large sample of Mexican men and premenopausal (pre-MP) women.

METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Health Workers Cohort Study. Bone mineral content (BMC, kg), bone area (cm²), and LM (kg) were measured with DXA. The LTPA level and the "sedentary" condition were determined using a validated questionnaire adapted for the Mexican population. One-way ANOVA tests evaluated the differences in weight, height, body mass index, and wb, lower limb (ll) and upper limb (ul) BMC and LM between the active (those who engaged in LTPA) and sedentary group. Relationships between BMC and LM values were analyzed. Slopes of the curves and Z scores of LTPA groups with respect to the sedentary group were compared.

RESULTS

In men, both wb-BMC and ll-BMC were significantly higher in the groups performing basketball, football, tennis, weightlifting, and running, and all wb-LM, ll-LM, and ul-LM were higher in running, weightlifting, football, and basketball groups with respect to the sedentary group. Both the Z scores and the slopes of BMC-vs-LM relationships were higher than the controls, but only in the ll of male basketball and football players.

CONCLUSION

Our findings demonstrate that some types of LTPA with relatively high/medium impact on bones, such as football, basketball, tennis, and weightlifting, improve both BMC and LM compared to sedentary individuals. Finally, this relationship is stronger for the bones found in the legs and it seems that women are less sensitive to this effect, possibly due to hormonal, dietary, and pharmacological reasons.

Influence of the built environment of Nanjing's Urban Community on the leisure physical activity of the elderly: an empirical study

Background

Urbanization and aging are global phenomena that offer unique challenges in different countries. A supportive environment plays an important role in addressing the issues of health behavioral change and health promotion (e.g., prevent chronic illnesses, promote mental health) among older adults. With the development of the socio-ecological theoretical model, studies on the impact of supportive environments on physical activity have become popular in the public health field in the EU and US. Meanwhile, very few Chinese studies have examined the relationship between built environment features and older adults’ physical activity at the ecological level. The purpose of the study is to investigate how the factors part of the built environment of Nanjing’s communities also influence leisure time physical activity among the elderly.

Methods

Using a socio-ecological model as a theoretical framework, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 399 elderly people from 19 communities in Nanjing, China, using a one-on-one questionnaire to collect data, including participants’ perceived built environment and self-reported physical activity. A multivariate linear regression method was used to analyze the factors influencing their recreational physical activity.

Results

This study found that compared to older people with low average monthly income, the recreational physical activity of the elderly with average monthly incomes between 1001 and 2000 ¥ (β = 23.31, p < 0.001) and 2001 ¥ or more (β = 21.15, p < 0.001) are significantly higher. After controlling for individual covariates, street connectivity (β = 7.34, p = 0.030) and street pavement slope (β = − 7.72, p = 0.020), we found that two out of ten built environment factors indicators influence their physical activity. The importance of each influencing factor ranked from highest to lowest are monthly average income, street pavement slope, and street connectivity. Other factors were not significantly related to recreational physical activity by the elderly.

Conclusions

Older adults with a high income were more likely to participate in recreational physical activity than those with a low income. In order to positively impact physical activity in older adults and ultimately improve health, policymakers and urban planners need to ensure that street connectivity and street pavement slope are factored into the design and development of the urban environment.

The association of lifetime physical inactivity with head and neck cancer: a hospital-based case-control analysis

Despite mounting epidemiological evidence suggesting an inverse association between recreational physical activity and cancer risk, evidence associated with head and neck cancer is scant. We conducted a case-control analysis to examine the associations of lifetime physical inactivity with the risk of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We utilized data from the Patient Epidemiology Data System at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI). Participants included 246 patients with HNSCC and 504 cancer-free controls who received medical services at RPCI between 1990 and 1998. Participants were considered physically inactive if they did not participate in any regular, weekly recreational physical activity throughout their lifetime, prior to diagnosis. Multivariate logistic regression models were utilized to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) representing the association between lifetime physical inactivity and HNSCC risk. We observed a significant positive association between recreational physical inactivity and HNSCC risk (OR = 2.73, 95% CI 1.87-3.99, p < 0.001). In subgroup analyses by body mass index (BMI) (underweight/normal-weight: OR = 3.40, 95% CI 1.89-6.12, p < 0.001; overweight/obese: OR = 2.40, 95% CI 1.43-4.02, p < 0.001) and smoking status (former smoker: OR = 3.12, 95% CI 1.89-5.14, p < 0.001; never smoker: OR = 2.71, 95% CI 1.21-6.05, p = 0.020; current smoker: OR = 1.61, 95% CI 0.66-3.95, p = 0.300), significant positive associations were also observed. Results of the current analyses suggest that lifetime physical inactivity associates with HNSCC independent of BMI. In addition, physical inactivity may be a modifiable risk factor among never smokers. These data add to the growing body of evidence suggesting that physical inactivity may be an independent risk factor for cancer.

Recreational Physical Activity and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Risk: A Pooled Analysis of Two Case-Control Studies

PURPOSE

Physical activity has been hypothesized to influence cancer occurrence through several mechanisms. To date, its relation with thyroid cancer risk has been examined in relatively few studies. We pooled 2 case-control studies conducted in Cuba and Eastern France to assess the relationship between self-reported practice of recreational physical activity since childhood and thyroid cancer risk.

METHODS

This pooled study included 1,008 cases of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) matched with 1,088 controls (age range 9-35 and 17-60 years in the French and Cuban studies, respectively). Risk factors associated with the practice of recreational physical activity were estimated using OR and 95% CI. Logistic regressions were stratified by age class, country, and gender and were adjusted for ethnic group, level of education, number of pregnancies for women, height, BMI, and smoking status.

RESULTS

Overall, the risk of thyroid cancer was slightly reduced among subjects who reported recreational physical activity (OR = 0.8; 95% CI 0.5-1.0). The weekly frequency (i.e. h/week) seems to be more relevant than the duration (years).

CONCLUSION

Long-term recreational physical activity, practiced since childhood, may reduce the DTC risk. However, the mechanisms whereby the DTC risk decreases are not yet entirely clear.

Work, household, and leisure-time physical activity and risk of mortality in the EPIC-Spain cohort

OBJECTIVE

Large-scale longitudinal data on the association of domain-specific physical activity (PA) and mortality is limited. Our objective was to evaluate the association of work, household (HPA), and leisure time PA (LTPA) with overall and cause-specific mortality in the EPIC-Spain study.

METHODS

38,379 participants (62.4% women), 30-65years old, and free of chronic disease at baseline were followed-up from recruitment (1992 - 1996) to December 31st, 2008 to ascertain vital status and cause of death. PA was evaluated at baseline and at a 3-year follow-up with a validated questionnaire (EPIC-PAQ) and combined variables were used to classify the participants by sub-domains of PA. Associations with overall, cancer, and cardiovascular mortality risks were assessed using competing risk Cox regression models adjusted by potential confounders.

RESULTS

After 13.6years of mean follow-up, 1371 deaths were available for analyses. HPA was strongly associated to reduced overall (hazard ratio (HR) for Q4 vs. Q1=0.47 (0.34, 0.64)) and cause-specific mortalities in women and to lower cancer mortality in men (P for trend=0.004), irrespective of age, education, and lifestyle and morbidity variables. LTPA was associated with lower mortality in women (HR for Q4 vs. Q1=0.71 (0.52, 0.98)), but not men. No relationships were found between sedentariness at work and overall mortality.

CONCLUSIONS

HPA was associated to lower mortality risk in men and women from the EPIC-Spain cohort, whereas LTPA also contributed to reduce risk of death in women. Considering the large proportion of total daily PA that HPA represents in some population groups, these results are of public health importance.
