Clinical academic radiographers - A challenging but rewarding career

OBJECTIVES

To explain what a clinical academic career can be, what it can lead to for the individual, profession and most importantly the patient, and why these roles are so important to radiography.

KEY FINDINGS

Multiple challenges to the adoption of clinical academic careers exist, including achievable measurable outcomes, visibility & senior support, and balancing different time demands. Equally the rewards are wide ranging and can advance both the individual and profession through role extension opportunities, increased career progression, patient benefits, and academic and research skills.

CONCLUSION

Clinical academic careers can provide advantages for the individual, department, profession and most importantly the patient with advanced clinical practice through evidenced based research.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Improving clinical academic careers within Radiography will promote research participation and increase radiographic roles in patient-centred research delivery and development. Combining evidenced based research with academic skills will lead to improved patient care and better clinical outcomes.

Developing an application for the UK Pre-Doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship (PCAF): the collective experience of a community of physiotherapists

For physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals, developing capability and expertise in research can be challenging. However, involvement in research is beneficial at organisational and individual levels, both for clinicians and patients. One way to embark on research is to apply for a personal fellowship such as the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Pre-Doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship (PCAF). While the NIHR has guidance on how to complete the application form, it can be difficult to implement this guidance and understand what a competitive application looks like. As a group of physiotherapists and academic supervisors, who have applied for NIHR PCAFs, what follows is a supportive resource, to inform others who might be thinking of applying. Collaborations between health services and educational institutions to develop research capacity in health services and health service staff: a systematic scoping review

BACKGROUND

Participation of health service staff in research improves health outcomes and adherence to clinical guidelines. To increase research participation, many health services seek to build research capacity which adds to the development of individual and organisational skills and abilities in order to conduct health research. Numerous approaches to research capacity building have been trialed with inter- and intra-institutional, or university-health service collaborative approaches being frequently described strategies. University-health service research collaborations have potential for high impact and mutual benefit, by harnessing respective strengths across both organisations. However, the range and scope of research capacity building approaches, including their relative value and success have not been consolidated. The aim of this review was to examine and describe the collaborative strategies employed by health services in conjunction with educational partners to enhance the research capability of health service staff.

METHODS

The scoping review framework by Arksey and O'Malley was used to inform the review method. A systematic search was conducted of four major databases: Medline, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane, focusing on publications after 1995. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established through iterative team discussions. The two-stage screening process and data extraction was managed in Covidence. Collaboration, Research Capacity, Health Services, and Health workforce were the primary concepts, contexts and populations guiding the search.

RESULTS

Of the 1462 studies identified, 61 were selected for the review. These studies reported on partnerships between universities and health services with a specific focus on building research capacity of health service staff. Studies predominantly hailed from Australia, USA, UK, and Canada. Collaboration approaches varied and leveraged different activities to build research capacity included training, mentoring, shared funding, and networking. Training partnerships emerging as the most prevalent. Findings emphasised the importance of localisation in approaches, with some studies indicating the intrinsic value of such collaborations for both partners involved. Despite the emphasis on individual interventions like training and mentoring, team-level interventions were notably scarce.

CONCLUSION

This review highlights the diverse range of approaches in research capacity building collaborations between health services and educational partners. It advocates for a shared understanding of goals, highlighting the critical nature of relationship-building and the pivotal role of sustainable infrastructure in long-term collaboration success. Future directions should consider the tangible impacts of these models on clinical outcomes.

Research and fellowship funding perspectives: A collective NIHR experience of a community of pre- and post-doctoral radiographers

OBJECTIVES

This paper harnesses a comprehensive overview and the collective experience of a community of pre- and post-doctoral Radiographers in successfully securing grants to demonstrate what is required as part of an NIHR fellowship application.

KEY FINDINGS

Developing a research fellowship application requires individuals to expose themselves to critique to improve the content, design and structure of the proposed piece of work. The scale of the project should be carefully considered when developing applications, with the research plan accurately and realistically proposing a suitable amount of work to be undertaken within the timeframe. All fellowship applications comprise several key elements which must be meticulously crafted to address the requirements of the specific call. This is critical because every section of the application undergoes scrutiny by review panels to ensure the funding achieves its maximum impact. The key elements requiring detailed information are themed around Project, Person, Place, Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE), the surrounding People, and a training plan. However, a golden thread highlighting inclusive research that is people-centred is required to run through the entire application.

CONCLUSION

NIHR fellowships are an important pathway to enable dedicated clinically relevant research projects for patient/family benefit to be combined with the advancement of an individual's clinical and academic skills. These dedicated funding streams are tailor-made to enable a wide range of healthcare professionals, including Radiographers, to develop into research leaders of the future.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Maximising research training opportunities, including research fellowships for the Radiography profession, will offer the completion of clinically relevant research projects alongside the development of the research leaders of the future.
