NHCs silver complexes as potential antimicrobial agents

NHCs (N-heterocyclic carbenes) are generally used as organic ligands that can coordinate with metal ions like silver to form stable complexes. These complexes have shown enhanced antimicrobial properties compared to silver alone. This document provides an overview of the reported NHC-based silver derivatives (acetates, chlorides, bromides, and iodides) who possess antimicrobial activity. This review covers articles published between the first report (2006) and 2023.

Disentangling the Effects of Laser and Electron Irradiation on AgX (X = Cl, Br, and I): Insights from Quantum Chemical Calculations

The effects on the lattice structure and electronic properties of different polymorphs of silver halide, AgX (X = Cl, Br, and I), induced by laser irradiation (LI) and electron irradiation (EI) are investigated using a first-principles approach, based on the electronic temperature (Te) within a two-temperature model (TTM) and by increasing the total number of electrons (Ne), respectively. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations provide a clear visualization of how Te and Ne induce a structural and electronic transformation process during LI/EI. Our results reveal the diffusion processes of Ag and X ions, the amorphization of the AgX lattices, and a straightforward interpretation of the time evolution for the formation of Ag and X nanoclusters under high values of Te and Ne. Overall, the present work provides fine details of the underlying mechanism of LI/EI and promises to be a powerful toolbox for further cross-scale modeling of other semiconductors.

Cotton fabrics decorated with nanostructured Ag/AgX (X:Cl,Br) as reusable solar light-mediated bactericides: A comparative study

In this study, cotton fabrics decorated with Ag/AgCl and Ag/AgBr NPs were produced by a simple hydrothermal treatment using AgCl and AgBr as precursors. Their morphological features as well as, chemical composition and structural and luminescence properties were compared. Their water disinfection aptitude against E. coli and S. aureus was also investigated under solar illumination in batch as well asin dynamic conditions. The highest activity was observed for Cot-Ag/AgCl with a quasi-complete inactivation of E. coli and S. aureus(1.5 × 10⁷cfu mL^-1) within 15 min illumination. Disinfection efficiency under continuous flow was also tested using a home-made photoreactor and the cotton fabrics with the most efficient photocatalyst (Ag/AgCl). It has shown to be efficient at least for 10 cycles revealing the robustness of the functionalization. The mechanism of photocatalytic disinfection was explained in terms of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) induced by the presence of Ag NPs, the resulting holes, h⁺, being one of the most intervenient species in the disinfection mechanism. The difference in the photocatalytic efficiency between AgCl and AgBr functionalized cotton was attributed to differences in the carriers (h⁺and e-) lifetime. This work provides a proof of concept for the potential applicability of Cot-Ag/AgCl or Cot-Ag/AgBr for in-flow potabilization of water under solar illumination.

Paper-based devices for biothiols sensing using the photochemical reduction of silver halides

This study describes the development of paper-based devices for the determination of biothiols. The devices are inexpensive (composed of paper and silver halide particles), and the analytical protocol is easily executable with minimum technical expertise and without the need of specialized equipment; the user has to add a test sample, illuminate the device with a UV lamp, and read the color change of the sensing area using a simple imaging device (i.e., cell-phone camera) or a bare eye. The detection mechanism of the assay is based on the biothiols-mediated photoreduction of nanometer-sized silver chloride particles deposited on the surface of paper; photoreduced silver chloride particles have a grayish coloration that depends on the concentration of biothiols in the tested solution. This is the first time that the UV-mediated photoreduction of solid silver halides particles is used for analytical purposes. The performance of the devices has been tested on the detection of total biothiols content of artificial body fluids and protein-free human blood plasma samples, and the results were satisfactory in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, recoveries and reproducibility.

Low-cost colorimetric assay of biothiols based on the photochemical reduction of silver halides and consumer electronic imaging devices

This work describes a new approach for the determination of free biothiols in biological fluids that exploits some of the basic principles of early photographic chemistry - that was based on silver-halide recording materials - and uses broadly-available imaging devices (i.e. flatbed scanners) as detectors. Specifically, the proposed approach relies on the ability of biothiols to bind to silver ions and dissociate the silver halide crystals thus changing the photosensitivity of silver halide crystal suspension. The changes induced by biothiols on the light intensity transmitted through the silver halide suspension, after photochemical reduction, were measured with a simplified photometric approach that employs a flatbed scanner operating in transmittance mode. The overall analytical procedure for the determination of biothiols was easily executable, fast and could be applied with inexpensive and commercially available materials and reagents. What is more, physiologically relevant biothiol levels could be inspected even by the unattended eye. The developed assay was successfully applied to the determination of biothiols in urine and blood plasma samples with detection limits as low as 10μM, satisfactory recoveries (92-97%), good reproducibility (6.7-8.8%) and high selectivity against other major components of biological fluids. The utility of the method to the determination of reduced/oxidized thiol ratio's as well as its application under natural light illumination, without external energy sources, was also demonstrated and is discussed with regard to point-of need applications in facility-limited settings.

Grand Canonical Monte Carlo coupled multiscale simulation for electrochemical and solvent parameters of silver halide systems in water

Grand Canonical Monte Carlo methods in conjunction with continuum Multiscale simulation to estimate the hydration energies and surface potentials of silver halides as demonstrated elsewhere is employed by incorporating random distribution of molecules, nearest neighbor distances and hydration numbers. The extent of dehydration during each step and the corresponding variation in the hydration numbers are evaluated, assuming the validity of hard spheres. These estimates are then employed to deduce the redox potential of the reaction viz. 2AgX(solution)⇔2Ag(solid)+X2(gas). The dependence of these values on the nature of the halides and solvation characteristics is indicated.
