Differences in skeletal growth pattern of yoga practising adolescent girls: A cross-sectional study

Background

Yogasana improves both mental and physical health. There is sparse systematic research on the growth of yogasana practising adolescents.

Objectives

This study aims to assess the differential skeletal growth pattern among pre-adolescent and adolescent girls as a result of yoga practice.

Methods

A cross-sectional anthropometric study was conducted on stature (height), sitting height and leg length of 757 school-going girls (4-15 years old), divided in two groups, Yoga Group (YG) (n=380) and age matched Control Group (CG) (n=377) participants participating in recreational games other than yoga. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were applied. Unpaired t-test was performed for assessment of level of significance and Pearson's correlation (r) test was performed to to identify the association between growth pattern of stature and leg length at specific ages.

Results

The physical growth showed an ascending trend in both Yoga group (YG)2 participants and control group (CG)3 . At the onset of adolescence (10–12 years) the mean stature and leg length of YG participants were retarded (p < 0.05). Sitting height in YG was significantly (p < 0.05) low only in 10-year-olds. The similar trends were observed in stature and leg length in YG participants at 10 years (5th and 10th percentile) and 12 years (90th and 95th percentile). There was strong positive relationship between stature and leg length of YG participants (10 years, r = 0.86, p < 0.01; 11 years, r = 0.86, p < 0.01; 12 years, r = 0.72, p < 0.01). The stunted growth in YG participants during adolescence may be related to retarded growth of leg length.

Conclusions

Intense yogasana practice with greater skeletal stress possibly hinders stature in adolescent girls from 10 to 12 years. This may compromise with the natural growth pattern, necessitating special care during yoga training among adolescents while selecting the type, intensity and duration of yogasanas practice.

Compromised maternal nutritional status in early pregnancy and its relation to the birth size in young rural Indian mothers

BACKGROUND

Low birth weight is highly prevalent in rural India. As a chronic undernutrition problem, poor birth outcomes are closely related to various nutritional factors more prominently the poor maternal anthropometry at conception. The purpose of the study was to identify how compromised maternal nutritional status in early pregnancy affects the birth size of rural Indian mothers.

METHODS

It was a prospective observational study on singleton pregnant women (n = 204) from 14 villages in Mulshi Taluka of Pune District, Maharashtra, India. Maternal weight (Wt), height (Ht), body fat percent (BF%), head circumference (HC), and sitting height (SHT) were measured at early pregnancy (< 13 weeks of gestation) and infants' weight and length were measured within 24 h of birth. Groups means were tested using a 't' test while the trend in means was tested using ANOVA.

RESULTS

Mothers were young (21.46 ± 2.09 yrs), thin (46.46 ± 6.1 kg), short (153.39 ± 5.79 cm), and poorly nourished (19.74 ± 2.41 kg/m2). Mean birth weight was low (2655 ± 507 g) and prevalence of LBW and stunting at birth was highest among mothers in the lower tertile of each of the anthropometric indicators. In particular, stunting was significantly higher for mothers in lower tertile compared to higher tertile of Wt (44.6 Vs 64.6%) and was also true for HC (43.7 Vs 60.6%). Risk for LBW and stunting at birth was almost similar and was significant (p < 0.01) for mothers in the lower tertile of Wt, Ht, BMI, SHT, HC, and BF% as compared to those in the higher tertile of these measurements.

CONCLUSION

All the anthropometric indicators of current undernutrition at first trimester as well as that in utero reflected by smaller HC, impose risk for LBW and stunting at birth especially among young rural mothers.

First growth reference curves for Tunisian children and adolescents

A growth chart is a powerful graphical tool displaying children's growth patterns. The aim of this study was to develop growth reference curves appropriate for Tunisian children. The collection of data from this cross-sectional study was conducted on 4358 healthy subjects (2182 girls and 2176 boys) in three pediatric centers and 15 schools. Smoothed growth curves were estimated using the LMS method. The smoothed percentile curves for height, weight, sitting height (SH), and leg length (LL) increase rapidly during the 1st years of life and then progress slowly until 18 years. However, the sitting height-to-height ratio (SHTHR) curves decrease sharply before the age of 4 and then stabilize in both sexes. In addition, the comparison between boys and girls indicated that the values are very similar at most ages. Except during puberty, the values in boys increase (P<0.0001) for the weight, height, SH, and LL parameters and decline (P<0.0001) in the SHTHR compared to the values in girls. The growth rate curves presented two remarkable velocity peaks: the first appears during the 1st years of life and the second at puberty. Height gains at the last stage of growth (puberty) are around 15.45% of final height for boys and 15.52% for girls. This study showed a number of discrepancies for certain age groups when comparing the median weight and height values with those of the World Health Organization, the National Center for Health Statistics, and Algerian references in both sexes. Conclusion: The smoothed percentile curves for weight and height will be useful to access the general growth of Tunisian children. Furthermore, the SH, LL, and SHTHR curves can be used to monitor body proportions during childhood.

Leg length and sitting height reference data and charts for children in the United States

Population-specific reference data are required to interpret growth measurements in children. Sitting height and leg length (standing height minus sitting height) measurements are indicators of proportionality and can be used to evaluate children with disordered growth. NHANES III recorded sitting height and standing height measurements in a strategic random sample of the United States population from 1988 to 1994, and we have previously published reference charts for sitting height to standing height ratio in this population. In this study, we have developed separate sitting height and leg length reference charts for Non-Hispanic Black, Non-Hispanic White, and Mexican-American children in the United States. In addition, we provide mean (SD) and LMS data to support the use of these reference charts in clinical care.

Sitting height percentiles in 3-17-year-old Indian children: a multicentre study

Background: Sitting height (StH) percentiles are not described for the Indian paediatric population.Aim: To generate multicentre StH percentile values for Indian children.Subjects and methods: A total of 7961 apparently healthy children (3-17 years old, Boys: 4328) randomly selected from 10 schools from six states of India were measured for height (ht), StH and weight during July 2016-October 2017.Results: The StH:Ht ratio was 0.52 (0.02) and was similar between boys and girls (p > 0.1). The ratio decreased in boys until the age of 14 years and then slightly increased; the lowest ratio was observed during 13-15 years. In girls, however, the StH:Ht ratio decreased until the age of 9 years and then plateaued until 15 years of age with a slight increase at 16 years; the lowest ratio was observed at the age of 12-13 years. Sitting height percentiles (3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 97th) were computed using LMS chartmaker.Conclusions: The results indicate that, during the pubertal years, the lower limb growth is more predominant than trunk growth. Further, this study provides smoothened percentile curves for sitting height in Indian children for the first time.

Skeletal disproportion in glucocorticoid-treated boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy

We aimed to compare body segment and bone lengths in glucocorticoid-treated boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) with healthy controls using dual-energy absorptiometry (DXA) images. Total height (Ht), sitting height (SH), leg length (LL) and bone lengths (femur, tibia) in boys with DMD and age-matched control boys were measured using DXA. Thirty boys with DMD (median age 10.0 years (6.1, 16.8)) were compared with 30 controls. SH in DMD was 3.3 cm lower (95% CI - 6.1, - 0.66; p = 0.016). LL in DMD was 7.3 cm lower (95% CI - 11.2, - 3.4; p < 0.0001). SH:LL of boys with DMD was higher by 0.08 (95% CI 0.04, 0.12; p < 0.0001). Femur length in DMD was 2.4 cm lower (95% CI - 4.6, - 0.12; p = 0.04), whereas tibial length in DMD was 4.8 cm lower (95% CI - 6.7, - 2.9; p < 0.0001). SH:LL was not associated with duration of glucocorticoid use (SH:LL β = 0.003, 95% CI - 0.01 to 0.002, p = 0.72).Conclusion: Glucocorticoid-treated boys with DMD exhibit skeletal disproportion with relatively shorter leg length and more marked reduction of distal long bones. As glucocorticoid excess is not associated with such disproportion, our findings raise the possibility of an intrinsic disorder of growth in DMD. What is Known • Severe growth impairment and short stature are commonly observed in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), especially those treated with long-term glucocorticoids (GC). • In other groups of children with chronic conditions and/or disorders of puberty, skeletal disproportion with lower spinal length has been reported. What is New • Growth impairment in GC-treated boys with DMD was associated with skeletal disproportion in relation to age, with lower limbs and distal long bones affected to a greater degree.

The relationship between sitting height, sitting height to height ratio with blood pressure among Polokwane private school children aged 6-13 years

BACKGROUND

It is notable that sitting height (SH) correlates with blood pressure (BP) in children and adolescents of developed countries. However, little is known about the relationships between SH and SH to height ratio (SH/H) with BP in South African children from middle and upper socio-economic groups. The purpose of this study was to compare SH and SH/H of private school attending children in the Polokwane area with National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III) reference population and to determine the relationship between SH, SH/H with BP among private school attending children.

METHODS

A total of 1665 children (846 boys and 819 girls) aged between 6 and 13 years attending three private schools in Polokwane, underwent anthropometric and BP measurements using standard procedures. Linear regression was used to determine the relationship between height, SH, SH/H with BP among these children.

RESULTS

Polokwane private school attending boys from age 7 to 13 years displayed a lower mean SH compared to the NHANES III whereas NHANHES III girls from age 10 to 13 years had a higher mean SH compared to those in private school. In the simple regression analysis, SH was positively associated with SBP (β =1.318; 95% CI = 1.217-1.418) and DBP (β = 0.641; 95% Cl = 0.555-0.727). The findings remains statistically significant only for SH with both SBP (β = 1.025; 95% Cl = 0.844-1.201) and DBP (β = 0.585; 95% Cl 0.434-0.736) after adjusting for age, gender and BMI among these children.

CONCLUSION

In South African children, SH and SH/H were lower compared to the NHANES III children. There was a significant positive association between DBP and SBP together with the components of height among Polokwane private school children.
