Modeling the Conduction Mechanism in Chemoresistive Gas Sensor Based on Single-Crystalline Sn3O4 Nanobelts: A Phenomenological In Operando Investigation

Investigating the sensing mechanisms in semiconducting metal oxide (SMOx) gas sensors is essential for optimizing their performance across a wide range of potential applications. Despite significant progress in the field, there are still many gaps in comprehending the phenomenological processes occurring in one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. This article presents the first insights into the conduction mechanism of chemoresistive gas sensors based on single-crystalline Sn3O4 nanobelts using the operando Kelvin Probe technique. From this approach, direct current (DC) electrical resistance and work function changes were simultaneously measured in different working conditions, and a correlation between the conductance and the surface band bending was established. Appropriate modeling was proposed, and the results revealed that the conduction mechanism in the single-crystalline one-dimensional nanostructures closely aligns with the behavior observed in single-crystalline epitaxial layers rather than in polycrystalline grains. Based on this assumption, relevant parameters were further estimated, including Debye length, concentration of free charge carriers, effective density of states in the conduction band, and position of the Fermi level. Overall, this study provides an effective contribution to understanding the role of surface chemistry in the transduction of the electrical signal generated from gas adsorption in single-crystalline one-dimensional nanostructures.

Synthesis and Characterization of the Orthorhombic Sn3 O4 Polymorph

An unexplored tin oxide crystal phase (Sn₃ O₄ ) was experimentally synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. After tuning the often-neglected parameters for the hydrothermal synthesis, namely the degree of filling of the precursor solution and the gas composition in the reactor head space, an unreported X-ray diffraction pattern was discovered. Through various characterization studies, such as Rietveld analysis, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, this novel material was characterized as orthorhombic mixed-valence tin oxide with the composition Sn^II ₂ Sn^IV O₄ . This orthorhombic tin oxide is a new polymorph of Sn₃ O₄ , which differs from the reported conventional monoclinic structure. Computational and experimental analyses showed that orthorhombic Sn₃ O₄ has a smaller band gap (2.0 eV), enabling greater absorption of visible light. This study is expected to improve the accuracy of hydrothermal synthesis and aid the discovery of new oxide materials.

Enhanced UV-Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity by Constructing Appropriate Heterostructures between Mesopore TiO₂ Nanospheres and Sn₃O₄ Nanoparticles

Novel TiO₂/Sn₃O₄ heterostructure photocatalysts were ingeniously synthesized via a scalable two-step method. The impressive photocatalytic abilities of the TiO₂/Sn₃O₄ sphere nanocomposites were validated by the degradation test of methyl orange and •OH trapping photoluminescence experiments under ultraviolet (UV) and visible light irradiation, respectively. Especially under the visible light, the TiO₂/Sn₃O₄ nanocomposites demonstrated a superb photocatalytic activity, with 81.2% of methyl orange (MO) decomposed at 30 min after irradiation, which greatly exceeded that of the P25 (13.4%), TiO₂ (0.5%) and pure Sn₃O₄ (59.1%) nanostructures. This enhanced photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the mesopore induced by the monodispersed TiO₂ cores that supply sufficient surface areas and accessibility to reactant molecules. This exquisite hetero-architecture facilitates extended UV-visible absorption and efficient photoexcited charge carrier separation.
