Bromine, iodine and sodium along the EAIIST traverse: Bulk and surface snow latitudinal variability

During the East Antarctic International Ice Sheet Traverse (Eaiist, december 2019), in an unexplored part of the East Antarctic Plateau, snow samples were collected to expand our knowledge of the latitudinal variability of iodine, bromine and sodium as well as their relation in connection with emission processes and photochemical activation in this unexplored area. A total of 32 surface (0-5 cm) and 32 bulk (average of 1 m depth) samples were taken and analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Our results show that there is no relevant latitudinal trend for bromine and sodium. For bromine they also show that it has no significant post-depositional mechanisms while its inland surface snow concentration is influenced by spring coastal bromine explosions. Iodine concentrations are several orders of magnitude lower than bromine and sodium and they show a decreasing trend in the surface samples concentration moving southward. This suggests that other processes affect its accumulation in surface snow, probably related to the radial reduction in the ozone layer moving towards central Antarctica. Even though all iodine, bromine and sodium present similar long-range transport from the dominant coastal Antarctic sources, the annual seasonal cycle of the ozone hole over Antarctica increases the amount of UV radiation (in the 280-320 nm range) reaching the surface, thereby affecting the surface snow photoactivation of iodine. A comparison between the bulk and surface samples supports the conclusion that iodine undergoes spring and summer snow recycling that increases its atmospheric lifetime, while it tends to accumulate during the winter months when photochemistry ceases.

Lemming winter habitat: the quest for warm and soft snow

During the cold arctic winter, small mammals like lemmings seek refuge inside the snowpack to keep warm and they dig tunnels in the basal snow layer, usually formed of a soft depth hoar, to find vegetation on which they feed. The snowpack, however, is a heterogenous medium and lemmings should use habitats where snow properties favor their survival and winter reproduction. We determined the impact of snow physical properties on lemming habitat use and reproduction in winter by sampling their winter nests for 13 years and snow properties for 6 years across 4 different habitats (mesic, riparian, shrubland, and wetland) on Bylot Island in the Canadian High Arctic. We found that lemmings use riparian habitat most intensively because snow accumulates more rapidly, the snowpack is the deepest and temperature of the basal snow layer is the highest in this habitat. However, in the deepest snowpacks, the basal depth hoar layer was denser and less developed than in habitats with shallower snowpacks, and those conditions were negatively related to lemming reproduction in winter. Shrubland appeared a habitat of moderate quality for lemmings as it favored a soft basal snow layer and a deep snowpack compared with mesic and wetland, but snow conditions in this habitat critically depend on weather conditions at the beginning of the winter. With climate change, a hardening of the basal layer of the snowpack and a delay in snow accumulation are expected, which could negatively affect the winter habitat of lemmings and be detrimental to their populations.

Deciphering the turnover of bacterial groups in winter agricultural soils

In winter, snowpack is an important driver of soil bacterial processes. Amending soil through the addition of organic compost has also been reported to affect soil properties and bacterial communities. However, the effects of snow and organic compost on soils have not been systematically researched and compared. To investigate the effects of these two activities on the succession of bacterial communities in the soil and on important soil nutrients, four treatment groups were established in this study: no snow without compost (CK-N), no snow with compost (T1-N), snow without compost (CK-X) and snow with compost (T1-X). Four representative time periods were also selected according to the extent of snow accumulation, including the first snow and melt. In addition, the compost pile was treated with fertilizer made from decomposing food waste. The results indicate that Proteobacteria was more affected by temperature and that fertilization increased its proportional abundance. The abundance of Acidobacteriota was increased by snow. Ralstonia could depend on nutrients provided by organic fertilizers, which prevented them from ceasing to breed at low temperatures, while snow cover was still able to reduce their survival. However, snowpack increased the abundance of RB41. Snow reduced the point and connectivity of the bacterial community and increased the association with environmental factors, especially the negative correlation with total nitrogen (TN); the prefertilizer application made the community network larger while maintaining association with environmental factors. Specifically, more key nodes in sparse communities after snow cover were identified by Zi-Pi analysis. The present study systematically assessed soil bacterial community succession in the context of snow cover and fertilizer application and interpreted the farm environment from a microscopic perspective through the winter. We found that snowpack affects TN through bacterial community succession. This study offers new insight into soil management.

Photochemical reactions on aerosols at West Antarctica: A molecular case-study of nitrate formation among sea salt aerosols

Environmental implications of climate change are complex and exhibit regional variations both within and between the polar regions. The increase of solar UV radiation flux over Antarctica due to stratospheric ozone depletion creates the optimal conditions for photochemical reactions on the snow. Modeling, laboratory, and indirect field studies suggest that snowpack process release gases to the atmosphere that can react on sea salt particles in remote regions such as Antarctica, modifying aerosol composition and physical properties of aerosols. Here, we present evidence of photochemical processing in West Antarctica aerosols using microscopic and chemical speciation of individual atmospheric particles. Individual aerosol particles collected at the Brazilian module Criosfera 1 were analyzed by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy with near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM/NEXAFS) combined with computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis. The displacement of chlorine relative to sodium was observed over most of the sea salt particles. Particles with a chemical composition consistent with NaCl-NO₃ contributed up to 30% of atmospheric particles investigated. Overall, this study provides evidence that the snowpack and particulate nitrate photolysis should be considered in dynamic partition equilibrium in the troposphere. These findings may assist in reducing modeling uncertainties and present new insights into the aerosol chemical composition in the polar environment.

Source, timing and dynamics of ionic species mobility in the Svalbard annual snowpack

Nearly all ice core archives from the Arctic and middle latitudes (such as the Alps), apart from some very high elevation sites in Greenland and the North Pacific, are strongly influenced by melting processes. The increases in the average Arctic temperature has enhanced surface snow melting even of higher elevation ice caps, especially on the Svalbard Archipelago. The increase of the frequency and altitude of winter "rain on snow" events as well as the increase of the length of the melting season have had a direct impact on the chemical composition of the seasonal and permanent snow layers due to different migration processes of water-soluble species, such as inorganic ions. This re-allocation along the snowpack of ionic species could significantly modify the original chemical signal present in the annual snow. This paper aims to give a picture of the evolution of the seasonal snow strata with a daily time resolution to better understand: a) the processes that can influence deposition b) the distribution of ions in annual snow c) the impact of the presence of liquid water on chemical re-distribution within the annual snow pack. Specifically, the chemical composition of the first 100 cm of seasonal snow on the Austre Brøggerbreen Glacier (Spitsbergen, Svalbard Islands, Norway) was monitored daily from the 27th of March to the 31st of May 2015. The experimental period covered almost the entire Arctic spring until the melting season. This unique dataset gives us a daily picture of the snow pack composition, and helps us to understand the behaviour of cations (K⁺, Ca²⁺, Na⁺, Mg²⁺) and anions (Br^-, I^-, SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, Cl^-, MSA) in the Svalbard snow pack. We demonstrate that biologically related depositions occur only at the end of the snow season and that rain and melting events have different impacts on the snowpack chemistry.

Hydrochemical assessment (major ions and Hg) of meltwater in high altitude glacierized Himalayan catchment

Snowpack and glacial melt samples were collected to understand the hydrochemical, isotopic characteristics and the source of Hg contamination in high altitude glacierized Himalayan catchment. Both the snow and glacial melt were acidic in nature with calcium and magnesium as the dominant cations and bicarbonate and chloride as the dominant anions. The major ion concentrations for cations were found to be Ca²⁺ > Mg²⁺ > Na⁺ > K⁺ and HCO₃^- > Cl^- > SO₄^2- > NO₃^- for anions. The atmospheric processes like the precipitation source and aerosol scavenging control the snow chemistry and the weathering of the rocks modify the hydrochemistry of glacial melt. The samples of both the snow and glacial melt were classified as Ca-Mg-HCO₃^- type. The concentration of Hg in snow (154.95 ng L^-1) and glacial melt (112.04 ng L^-1) was highest (still lower compared to the maximum permissible limit (1000 ng L^-1) by WHO in drinking water) during summer season (August-September) and lowest (snow 2.2 and 40.01 ng L^-1 for glacial melt) during winter (November). The results reveal that mercury concentration in snowpacks is attributed to the combined mixing of long-range transport of pollutants via westerlies throughout the year and the industrial effluents coming from highly industrial belts of Panjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Indo-Gangetic plains, and neighboring areas via southwest monsoons during August-September. However, in glacial melt, the Hg concentration was typically controlled by rate of melting, leaching, and percolation. Higher degree and rate of glacial melting decreases the Hg concentration in glacial melt. Stable isotopic analysis and backward air mass trajectory modeling also corroborate the source of precipitation from southwest monsoons during August-September, with its air mass trajectories passing through the highly industrialized belts of Indo-Gangetic plain and adjoining areas.

Characteristic contaminants in snowpack and snowmelt surface runoff from different functional areas in Beijing, China

Characteristics of physicochemical parameters, dissolved-phase heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated for 68 urban snowmelt surface runoff and snowpack samples collected from five different functional areas in Beijing, including a business area (BA), a cultural and educational area (CEA), a garden area (GA), a residential area (RA), and a roadside area (RSA). Both snowmelt surface runoff and snowpack were significantly polluted by organic matter, as indicated by their high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC). Among the 11 heavy metals analyzed, Zn was the most enriched in all samples, followed by Mn, Fe, and Cu, whereas the concentrations of Pb, Cr, Cd, As, Ni, Sb, and Co were comparatively low. The results suggested that typical traffic emissions, natural events, industrial practices, and human activities were mainly sources of heavy metals. Low molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs were the dominant sources in snowmelt and snowpack. Anthracene (Ant) and fluorene (Flo) were the most enriched PAHs in both snowmelt surface runoff and snowpack. Coal burning for heating and traffic activities were the most important contributors of PAH pollutants in snowmelt surface runoff and snowpack in Beijing in the winter. Ecological risk assessment demonstrated, however, that heavy metals in snowmelt surface runoff pose little risk to downstream aquatic environments. A middle potential ecological risk could be caused by Ant, Flo, benzo[g, h, i]perylene (BghiP), and benzo[a]pyrene (BaA).
