Standoff trace explosives vapor detection at meter distances

Vapor detection is a noncontact sampling method, which is a less invasive means of explosives screening than physical swiping. Explosive vapor detection is a challenge due to the low levels of vapors available for detection. This study demonstrates that the parts-per-quadrillion sensitivity of atmospheric flow tube-mass spectrometry (AFT-MS) combined with a high-volume air sampler enables standoff detection of trace explosives vapor at distances of centimeters to meters. Standoff detection of explosives vapor was possible both upstream and downstream of the vapor source relative to room air currents. RDX vapor from a saturated source was detected at up to 2.5 m. Vapors from RDX residue and nitroglycerin residue were detected at distances up to 0.5 m. The sampling can be optimized by accounting for air movement in the room or environment, which could further extend standoff detection distances. Using AFT-MS with a high-volume sampler could also be effective for standoff vapor detection of drugs and additional chemical threats and could be useful for security screening applications such as at mail facilities, border crossings, and security checkpoints.

Standoff Detection System Using Raman Spectroscopy in the Deep-Ultraviolet Wavelength Region for the Detection of Hazardous Gas

This study developed a standoff detection system for Raman spectra in the deep-ultraviolet region to facilitate remote detection of various hazardous materials. Although Raman spectroscopy can distinguish various materials, the measurement of Raman spectra through standoff detection is challenging because of the low scattering cross-section of Raman scattering. The resonance Raman scattering effect in the deep-ultraviolet wavelength region is promising in terms of enhancing the spectral intensity of Raman scattering. A catoptric light receiver system was developed to effectively collect deep-ultraviolet light via a change in the distance from the primary to secondary mirror of the telescope. The experimental results for the standoff detection indicate that the system enables the measurement of the Raman spectrum of SO₂ gas, which was locally present 20 m from the system with a wavelength resolution of 0.15 nm. The gas used in this remote measurement has a relatively simple molecular structure among chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive gases. However, the high wavelength resolution of Raman spectroscopy will enable measurement of substances with complex molecular structures, such as bacteria and explosives, without losing the detailed structure of their spectra.

Spectral Considerations for Standoff Infrared Detection of RDX on Reflective Aluminum

This paper examines infrared spectroscopic effects for the standoff detection of an explosive material, hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), inkjet printed on an aluminum surface. Results of a spectroscopic study are described, using multiple optical setups. These setups were selected to explore how variations in the angles of incidence and collection from the surface of the material result in corresponding variations in the spectral signatures. The goal of these studies is to provide an understanding of these spectral changes since it affects standoff detection of hazardous materials on a reflective substrate. We demonstrate that variations in spectral effects are dependent on the relative surface concentration of the deposited RDX. We also show that it is reasonable to use spectroscopic data collected in a standard laboratory infrared spectrometer outfitted with a variable angle reflectometer set at 0° as reference spectra for data collected in a standoff configuration. These results are important to provide a systematic approach to understanding infrared (IR) spectra collection using standoff systems in the field, and to allow for comparison between such data, and data collected in the laboratory. Although the precise results are constrained to a specific material system (thin layers on a reflective substrate), the approach and general discussion provided are applicable to a broad range of IR standoff sensing techniques and applications.

Standoff detection of explosives and buried landmines using fluorescent bacterial sensor cells

A standoff detection scheme for buried landmines and concealed explosive charges is presented. The detection procedure consists of the following: Live bacterial sensor strains, genetically engineered to produce a dose-dependent amount of green fluorescent protein (GFP) in the presence of explosives' vapors, are encapsulated and spread on the suspected area. The fluorescence produced by the bacteria in response to traces of the explosive material in their microenvironment is remotely detected by a phase-locked optoelectronic sampling system. This scheme enables fast direct access to a large minefield area, while obviating the need to endanger personnel and equipment. Moreover, the employment of phase locking detection efficiently isolates the bacterial sensors' fluorescent output from the background optical signals. This facilitates the application of bacterial sensors in an outdoor environment, where control of background illumination is not possible. Using this system, we demonstrate standoff detection of 2,4-DNT both in aqueous solution and when buried in soil, by sensor bacteria either in liquid culture or agar-immobilized, respectively, at a distance of 50 m in a realistic optically noisy environment.
