Analyzing the impacts of topographic factors and land cover characteristics on waterlogging events in urban functional zones

Rapid urbanization and climate changes result in frequent occurrence of urban waterlogging disasters, which cause serious economic damage and pose a threat to residents' safety. Understanding the spatial characteristic and the key influencing factors of urban waterlogging has significant implications for mitigating waterlogging. In this study, the officially issued representative waterlogging points were obtained, as well as the topographic factors and land cover characteristics were selected to compare their impacts on the waterlogging event density in a highly urbanized area at urban functional zone (UFZ) scale, and to quantify the contributions of the key influencing factors on urban waterlogging events. Results showed the average density of urban waterlogging events in the study area is 9.2 points/km2, and 38.4 % of the waterlogging events are distributed in REZ. The distribution of waterlogging points in the study area revealed a significant multi-core and multilevel spatial aggregation pattern, and 12.1 % of the study area was high-density waterlogging area. In the total UFZs, the correlation coefficients of topographic indices with waterlogging density were relatively weaker than the other land cover characteristic metrics. The impervious surface ratio had significant contributions in all UFZ types. The larger ratio of impervious surface significantly increased the density of waterlogging events. The increase in the ratio of green space can effectively decrease the density of urban waterlogging. In the total UFZs, the top 3 key influencing factors of urban waterlogging were PR (35.9 %), COHESION (32.5 %) and DIVISION (11.8 %). The higher connectivity of landscape patches in REZ, INZ and COZ, as well as the increase of landscape dispersion or diversity in REZ, EGZ, INZ and GSZ can effectively reduce the occurrence of urban waterlogging. This study provides a better understanding of the formation mechanism of urban waterlogging disasters and potential implications for prioritized waterlogging mitigation strategies.

The role of topographic and soil factors on woody plant encroachment in mountainous rangelands: A mini literature review

Mountainous rangelands provide key ecosystem goods and services, particularly for human benefit. In spite of these benefits, mountain grasslands are undergoing extensive land-cover change as a result of woody plant encroachment. However, the influence of topographic and soil factors on woody plant encroachment is complex and has not yet been studied comprehensively. The aim of this review was to establish current knowledge on the influence of topographic and soil factors on woody plant encroachment in mountainous rangelands. To find relevant literature for our study on the impact of topographic and soil factors on woody plant encroachment in mountain rangelands, we conducted a thorough search on ScienceDirect and Google Scholar using various search terms. Initially, we found 27,745 papers. We narrowed down the search to include only 66 papers published in English that directly addressed the research area. The effect of slope aspect and slope position on woody plant encroachment is complex and dynamic, with no universal consensus on their impact. Some studies found higher woody plant encroachment on the cooler slopes, while others found increased woody plant encroachment on the warmer slopes. Slope gradient has a significant impact on woody plant encroachment, with steeper slopes tending to have more woody plant encroachment than gentle slopes. Soil texture and depth are important soil factors affecting woody plant encroachment. Coarse-textured soils promote the growth of woody plants, while fine-textured soils limit it. The effect of soil depth on woody plant encroachment remain unclear and requires further research. Soil moisture availability, soil nutrient content and soil microbial community are influenced by topography, which in turn affect the woody plant growth and distribution. In conclusion, the spread of woody plants in mountainous rangelands is a complex and dynamic process influenced by a range of factors. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind these interactions and to develop effective strategies for managing woody plant encroachment in mountainous rangelands.

Spatial and temporal variability of soil moisture in relation with topographic and meteorological factors in south of Ardabil Province, Iran

This research has been tried to evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of surface soil moisture (SM) in a semi-arid and cold region of Ardabil Province in Iran with an area of about 10,000 km². The used SM data is the SMAP Enhanced L2 Radiometer Half-Orbit 9 km Soil Moisture, provided by NASA. The study area was subdivided into 120 locations consisting 10 × 12 grids, matching with the pixels of the SMAP images. In order to evaluate the spatial variations of SM, the relation of mean SM with coefficient of variation and standard deviation has been evaluated and, then, the representative location for mean SM of the area has been identified using the index of temporal stability. Moreover, the effect of topographic factors (elevation, slope, and aspect) on spatial variations of SM, and the effect of meteorological factors (rainfall, sunshine hours, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and number of dry days) on temporal variations of SM have been investigated. The relation of mean SM with the coefficient of variation and standard deviation represented an exponentially negative and upper convex shape, respectively. The SM content of the representative location had a correlation with the mean SM of the area with the coefficient of determination value of 0.91. Of the three topographic factors, only the slope factor, and of the meteorological factors all of them except the wind speed have showed a significant relationship with SM spatial and temporal variations respectively.

Optimal Subdivision for Treatment and Management of Catastrophic Landslides in a Watershed Using Topographic Factors

Recent extreme rainfall events led to many landslides due to climate changes in Taiwan. How to effectively promote post-disaster treatment and/or management works in a watershed/drainage basin is a crucial issue. Regarding the processes of watershed treatment and/or management works, disaster hotspot scanning and treatment priority setup should be carried out in advance. A scanning method using landslide ratio to determine the appropriate outlet of an interested watershed, and an optimal subdivision system with better homogeneity and accuracy in landslide ratio estimation were developed to help efficient executions of treatment and/or management works. Topography is a key factor affecting watershed landslide ratio. Considering the complexity and uncertainty of the natural phenomenon, multivariate analysis was applied to understand the relationship between topographic factors and landslide ratio in the interested watershed. The concept of species-area curve, which is usually adopted at on-site vegetation investigation to determinate the suitable quadrate size, was used to derive the optimal threshold in subdivisions. Results show that three main component axes including factors of scale, network and shape extracted from Digital Terrain Model coupled with areas of landslide can effectively explain the characteristics of landslide ratio in the interested watershed, and a relation curve obtained from the accuracy of landslide ratio classification and number of subdivisions could be established to derive optimal subdivision of the watershed. The subdivision method promoted in this study could be further used for priority rank and benefit assessment of landslide treatment in a watershed.
