Preparation of effective ultraviolet shielding poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) degradable composite film using co-precipitation and hot-pressing method

Biodegradable poly (lactide) (PLA) and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) composite films were made by a co-precipitation and hot-pressing method. The property of composite films like the chemical interaction, phase morphology, mechanical properties, and thermal properties were studied. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) test manifested that there was a small amount of the transesterifications between the PBAT and PLA during hot pressing, which could improve the compatibility of the two phases. The tensile strength of the film only reduced by 7.4%, while the elongation at break was increased by 119.1% compared with PLA after adding 4%wt PBAT. The composite films showed a high Ultraviolet-visible (UV) light barrier property. The UV blocking rate of the composite after adding 4%wt PBAT was 6.95 times higher than that of pure PLA at 380 nm. The PLA/PBAT composite films with excellent thermal stability, satisfactory mechanical properties and UV-light barrier have high a possibility for an UV screening packaging application.

Solution-Based Deposition of Transparent Eu-Doped Titanium Oxide Thin Films for Potential Security Labeling and UV Screening

Transparent titanium oxide thin films attract enormous attention from the scientific community because of their prominent properties, such as low-cost, chemical stability, and optical transparency in the visible region. In this study, we developed an easy and scalable solution-based process for the deposition of transparent TiOx thin films on glass substrates. We showed that the proposed method is also suitable for the fabrication of metal-doped TiOx thin films. As proof-of-the-concept, europium Eu(III) ions were introduced into TiOx film. A photoluminescence (PL) study revealed that Eu-doped TiOx thin films showed strong red luminescence associated with ⁵D₀→⁷F_j relaxation transitions in Eu (III). We found that prepared TiOx thin films significantly reduce the transmittance of destructive UV radiation; a feature that can be useful for the protection of photovoltaic devices. In addition, transparent and luminescent TiOx thin films can be utilized for potential security labeling.

Tannin-Titanium Oxide Multilayer as a Photochemically Suppressed Ultraviolet Filter

UV filters can initiate redox reactions of oxygen and water when exposed to sunlight, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) that deteriorate the products containing them and cause biological damages. This photochemical reactivity originates from the high chemical potential of UV filters, which also determines the optical properties desirable for sunscreen applications. We hypothesize that this dilemma can be alleviated if the photochemical pathway of UV filters is altered to coupling with redox active molecules. Here, we employ tannic acid (TA) as a key molecule for controlling the photochemical properties of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs). TA provides an unusual way for layer-by-layer assembly of TiO₂ NPs by the formation of a ligand-to-metal charge transfer complex that alters the nature of UV absorption of TiO₂ NPs. The galloyl moieties of TA efficiently scavenge ROS due to the stabilization of ROS by intramolecular hydrogen bonding while facilitating UV screening through direct charge injection from TA to the conduction band of TiO₂. The TiO₂-TA multilayers assembled in open porous polymer microspheres substantially increased sun protection while dramatically reducing ROS under UV exposure. The assembled structure exhibits excellent in vivo anti-UV skin protection against epidermal hyperplasia, inflammation, and keratinocyte apoptosis without long-term toxicity.
