Explosives compounds from sea-dumped relic munitions accumulate in marine biota

Relic munitions are a hazardous legacy of the two world wars present in coastal waters worldwide. The southwest Baltic Sea has an especially high prevalence of unexploded ordnance and dumped munition material, which represent a large potential source of toxic explosive chemicals (munition compounds, MC). In the current study, diverse biota (plankton, macroalgae, tunicate, sponge, mollusc, echinoderm, polychaete, anemone, crustacea, fish) were collected from the Kiel Bight and a munitions dumpsite at Kolberger Heide, Germany, to evaluate the potential bioaccumulation of explosives and their derivatives (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, TNT; 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene and 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene, ADNT; 2,4-diamino-6-nitrotoluene and 2,6-diamino-4-nitrotoluene, DANT; 1,3-dinitrobenzene, DNB; and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane, RDX). One or more MCs were detected in >98% of organisms collected throughout the study region (n = 178), at a median level of 6 pmol/g (approximately 1 ng/g) and up to 2 × 10⁷ pmol/g (TNT in Asterias rubens collected from Kolberger Heide). In most cases, TNT and its transformation product compounds ADNT and DANT were significantly higher in biota from the munitions dumpsite compared with other locations. Generally, DNB and RDX were detected less frequently and at lower concentrations than TNT, ADNT, and DANT. In commercially important fish species (plaice, flounder) from Kolberger Heide, TNT and ADNT were detected in 17 and 33% of samples, respectively. In contrast DANT was detected in every fish sample, including those outside the dumpsite. Dinitrobenzene was the second most prevalent MC in fish tissue. Fish viscera (stomach, kidney, liver) showed higher levels of DANT than edible muscle flesh, with highest DANT in liver, suggesting reduced risk to seafood consumers. This study provides some of the first environmental evidence for widespread bioaccumulation of MC in a coastal marine food web. Although tissue MC content was generally low, corrosion of munition housings may lead to greater MC release in the future, and the ecological risk of this exposure is unknown.

The use of historical evidence in studies on underwater munitions

Marine scientists and other experts depend on information found in archival documents and other historical records to investigate underwater munitions. These sources help them locate dumpsites, establish timelines, identify ordnance, and better understand the hazards, chemicals, and degradation products found in their studies. However, historical sources do not always satisfy these needs, and can sometimes lead investigators down convoluted, incomplete, and misleading trails of evidence. This article seeks to provide scientists with some advice about conducting archival research and interpreting meaning from historical sources by recounting the history of a dumping operation that never happened over the summer of 1921. In doing so, this article demonstrates the value of historical perspectives and research methodologies, and encourages scientists to better integrate historical evidence into their work and seek out more collaborative opportunities with historians.

Release of Munitions Constituents in Aquatic Environments Under Realistic Scenarios and Validation of Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers for Monitoring

Munitions constituents (MC) may be released into aquatic environments as a result of underwater military munitions (UWMM) corrosion and breach. The present study investigated the release of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) from Composition B fragments under 2 realistic exposure scenarios in a large flume with flow set at 15 cm/s: the first represented the release of MC from fully exposed Composition B, and the second represented release through a small hole, simulating a breached munition. Release of MC through a small hole was approximately 10 times lower than from exposed Composition B, demonstrating the strong influence of exposure to flow on release. The rate of release of MC into the flume was similar to that previously reported in a related field experiment, but a similar mass loss resulted in MC concentration in the field >300 times lower, likely by the dilution effect of hydrodynamic transport. The present study corroborates previous findings of release of MC at UWMM sites resulting in concentrations below the toxicity threshold to most species. In the flume water, MC was quantified using frequent grab sampling and polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS). For TNT, POCIS-estimated time-weighted average concentrations were up to 40% higher than those derived from grab samples, whereas for RDX differences were 6% or less, demonstrating that POCIS provide reliable temporal integration of changing environmental concentrations for common MC. Method development and laboratory intercomparison of an RP-HPLC-UV method for energetic chemicals in marine tissues

Experiments were conducted to develop a method for the determination of a set of 17 military-relevant energetic compounds (including nitroaromatics, nitramines, and nitrate esters) in 5 types of marine tissues (Dungeness crab, Manila clam, starry flounder, sea cucumber, and geoduck) using reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography with a UV detector (RP-HPLC-UV). Dry-ice grinding was evaluated and found to be an excellent method of sample homogenization prior to sample extraction and determination. An extract cleanup procedure based on solid-phase extraction was assessed. A cleanup procedure using solid phase extraction was adequate for the removal of interferences prior to HPLC analysis for the five marine tissue matrices tested. Mean method detection limits (MDLs) were estimated using two columns at two wavelengths (254 and 210 nm) and ranged from 17 to 293 µg/kg for the five tissue matrices tested. A six-laboratory intercomparison test was conducted to evaluate the performance of the method, each analyzing five marine tissue matrices fortified at three levels. The same marine tissues were used in the laboratory intercomparison study except Pacific halibut was substituted for starry flounder. Overall, USEPA Method 8330B modified for tissue analysis showed suitable detection capability, analytical accuracy, precision, sensitivity, linear range, and robustness for sixteen (16) of the seventeen (17) analytes, for all five (5) of the marine tissue matrices studied. The exception was tetryl that proved to be unstable for all matrices as has been found for soils and sediments.
