Associations of Socioeconomic Factors and Unhealthy Lifestyles with Allostatic Load: A Meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Allostatic load (AL) is a biological tool for objectively assessing chronic stress and has been discussed inconsistently for its correlation with socioeconomic factors and unhealthy lifestyles. Therefore, this meta-analysis was performed to explore the impact of socioeconomic factors and unhealthy lifestyles on AL.

METHOD

Different databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, EBSCOhost, Embase, CNKI, VIP, SinoMed, and Wanfang, were searched from inception to June 6, 2023. A total of 25 studies, reporting the correlations of seven socioeconomic factors and three unhealthy lifestyles with AL, were finally included. The pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were examined using random-effect and fixed-effect models. Literature quality, heterogeneity, and publication bias were evaluated.

RESULTS

The meta-analysis showed a significantly increased risk of high AL in the older individuals as compared to the younger ones (OR = 1.05, 95% CI 1.04-1.06), in the individual with low education as compared to those with high education (OR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.05-1.48), and in the individuals with low physical activities as compared to those with high physical activities (OR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.26-1.64). This meta-analysis also showed a significantly decreased risk of high AL in the individuals with high income as compared to those with low income (OR = 0.77, 95% CI 0.71-0.83) and in women as compared to men (OR = 0.80, 95% CI 0.80-0.81).

CONCLUSION

This meta-analysis showed older people, men, and people having low physical activity, low income, and low education were more likely to have a high AL.

This meta-analysis was registered on the PROSPERO database with trial registration number CRD42022326105. Instead of providing information at registration, we added an author (Tingyu Mu), who provided critical revisions to the paper in this meta-analysis.

Metabolic risk factors link unhealthy lifestyles to the risk of colorectal polyps in China

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of global cancer-related deaths, and its precursor lesions are colorectal polyps (CAP). The study aimed to explore the effect of combinations of unhealthy lifestyles on CAP and investigate the mediation role of metabolic disorder in this process. A total of 1299 adults were recruited from a hospital in Jiangsu, China, including 811 cases and 488 adults without diseases. The information on demographic characteristics and lifestyles was collected through questionnaires and the medical record system. Serum biochemical parameters were determined using the automatic biochemical analyzer. Adjusted regression analysis showed that unhealthy lifestyles, including smoking, overnight meals, daily water intake, staying up late, and exercise associated with the risk of CAP. Furthermore, metabolic biomarkers, including BMI, triglycerides, and uric acid, were associated with the risk of CAP. Also, unhealthy lifestyle scores were positively associated with BMI, triglycerides, and CAP. The mediation effect of metabolic biomarkers, such as BMI and triglycerides on the association of unhealthy lifestyle scores with CAP was significant. Available data demonstrate the adverse effect of combinations of unhealthy lifestyle factors on CAP, and metabolic disorders to potentially mediate the association of unhealthy lifestyles with the risk of CAP.

A comparison of unhealthy lifestyle practices among adults with hypertension aware and unaware of their hypertensive status: results from the 2013 WHO STEPS survey in Burkina Faso

BACKGROUND

We compared the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle factors between the hypertensive adults who were aware and unaware of their hypertensive status and assessed the factors associated with being aware of one's hypertension among adults in Burkina Faso.

METHODS

We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the World Health Organization Stepwise approach to surveillance survey conducted in 2013 in Burkina Faso. Lifestyle factors analysed were fruits and vegetables (FV) consumption, tooth cleaning, alcohol and tobacco use, body mass index and physical activity.

RESULTS

Among 774 adults living with hypertension, 84.9% (95% CI: 82.2-87.3) were unaware of their hypertensive status. The frequencies of unhealthy lifestyle practices in those aware vs. unaware were respectively: 92.3% vs. 96.3%, p = 0.07 for not eating, at least, five FV servings daily; 63.2% vs. 70.5%, p = 0.12 for not cleaning the teeth at least twice a day; 35.9% vs. 42.3%, p = 0.19 for tobacco and/or alcohol use; 53.9% vs. 25.4%, p = 0.0001 for overweight/obesity and 17.1% vs, 10.3%, p = 0.04 for physical inactivity. In logistic regression analysis, older age, primary or higher education, being overweight/obese [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.2; p < 0.0001], intake of adequate FV servings daily (aOR = 2.9; p = 0.023) and non-use of alcohol and tobacco (aOR = 0.6; p = 0.028) were associated with being aware of one's hypertensive status.

CONCLUSION

Undiagnosed hypertension was very high among Burkinabè adults living with hypertension. Those aware of their hypertension diagnosis did not necessarily practise healthier lifestyles than those not previously aware of their hypertension. Current control programmes should aim to improve hypertension awareness and promote risk reduction behaviour.

Diet and lifestyle habits: Association with cardiovascular disease indices in a Nigerian sub-population

BACKGROUND

There is inadequate evidence regarding the pattern of unhealthy lifestyle behaviours in Nigeria hence the aim of this study was to assess the pattern of lifestyle-related habits that predispose to risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) indices in a Nigerian population.

METHODS

A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out on 422 apparently healthy males and females ≥18 years old. The World Health Organisation (WHO) STEPwise questionnaire was used to collect information on tobacco use or smoking habits, alcohol consumption and dietary habits. Logistic regression analysis was employed.

RESULTS

22.8% and 30.2% of participants indicated that someone smoked in their home and/or in closed areas at workplace, respectively, in the past 30 days. 225/422 admitted to taking alcohol including 72% within the past 12 months. 52.8% of the participants consumed <5 servings of fruits and/or vegetables each day. Results further showed that participants with <5 servings of fruits and/or vegetables (OR: 1.06, CI: 1.01-1.13, p = 0.028) and high level of alcohol consumption (OR: 1.85, CI: 1.18-2.88, p = 0.007) were more likely to have hypertension.

CONCLUSIONS

The relatively high prevalence of alcohol consumption and apparent unhealthy diet are of huge concern given the increasing prevalence of CVD indices in the population.
