Copper accumulation in vineyard soils: Rhizosphere processes and agronomic practices to limit its toxicity

Viticulture represents an important agricultural practice in many countries worldwide. Yet, the continuous use of fungicides has caused copper (Cu) accumulation in soils, which represent a major environmental and toxicological concern. Despite being an important micronutrient, Cu can be a potential toxicant at high concentrations since it may cause morphological, anatomical and physiological changes in plants, decreasing both food productivity and quality. Rhizosphere processes can, however, actively control the uptake and translocation of Cu in plants. In particular, root exudates affecting the chemical, physical and biological characteristics of the rhizosphere, might reduce the availability of Cu in the soil and hence its absorption. In addition, this review will aim at discussing the advantages and disadvantages of agronomic practices, such as liming, the use of pesticides, the application of organic matter, biochar and coal fly ashes, the inoculation with bacteria and/or mycorrhizal fungi and the intercropping, in alleviating Cu toxicity symptoms.

Pesticide residues in vineyard soils from Spain: Spatial and temporal distributions

Spatial and temporal evaluations of seventeen pesticides and some of their degradation products were carried out in seventeen vineyard soils from La Rioja region (Spain). The soils were sampled in March, June and October 2012, and the pesticides were selected among those previously detected in surface and ground waters from the same area. All pesticides were detected in some of the soils in the three different areas of La Rioja at the different sampling times, with only the metalaxyl metabolite, CGA-62826, not being detected in any of the soils sampled in October. The highest concentrations were determined for the fungicides metalaxyl (11.5 μg kg(-1)) and triadimenol (26.1 μg kg(-1)), the herbicides fluometuron (174.6 μg kg(-1)) and terbuthylazine (403.3 μg kg(-1)), and the insecticide methoxyfenozide (4.61 μg kg(-1)). While the highest total concentration of pesticides was detected in March, the highest number of positive detections was recorded in June (46), as opposed to 26 and 19 in March and October, respectively. Significant differences were detected in the concentrations of herbicides in soils from the three areas in La Rioja, but this was not the case for the fungicides and the insecticides. The study revealed a more intensive use of herbicides in March, while the use of insecticides and fungicides probably depended on the specific needs of crops and/or the onset of diseases. The results are consistent with the residues found in waters in the region, and highlight the need to implement strategies for more efficient application of these compounds to avoid risk of water contamination.

Bioavailability of potentially toxic elements in soil-grapevine (leaf, skin, pulp and seed) system and environmental and health risk assessment

Monitoring of potentially toxic elements in agricultural soil represents the first measure of caution regarding food safety, while research into element bioavailability should be a step forward in understanding the element transportation chain. This study was conducted in the grapevine growing area ("Oplenac Wine Route") for investigating element bioavailability in the soil-grapevine system accompanied by an assessment of the ecological implications and human health risk. Single extraction procedures (CH₃COOH, Na₂EDTA, CaCl₂, NH₄NO₃ and deionised H₂O) and digestion were performed to estimate the bioavailability of 22 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, V and Zn) from the topsoil (0-30 cm) and subsoil (30-60 cm) to the grapevine parts (leaf, skin, pulp and seed) and wine. The extractants were effective comparing to the pseudo-total concentrations in following order Na₂EDTA ˃ CH₃COOH ˃ NH₄NO₃ ˃ CaCl₂, H₂O 2 h and 16 h. The most suitable extractants for assessing the bioavailability of the elements from the soil to the grapevine parts were CaCl₂, NH₄NO₃ and Na₂EDTA, but deionised H₂O could be suitable, as well. The results showed that Ba was the most bioavailable element in the soil-grapevine system. Contamination factor implied a moderate contamination (1 < CF < 3) of the soil. The concentrations of Cr, Ni and Cd in the soil were above the maximum allowed concentrations. According to the biological accumulation coefficient (BAC), the grape seeds and grapevine leaves mostly accumulated Cu and Zn from the soil, respectively. Based on ratio factor (RF > 1), the influence of atmospheric deposition on the aerial grapevine parts (leaves and grape skin) was observed. Nevertheless, low adverse health risk effects (HI < 1 and R ≤ 1 × 10^-6) were estimated for farmers and grape and wine consumers.

Adsorption/desorption of sulfamethoxypyridazine and enrofloxacin in agricultural soils

Adsorption and desorption processes were studied for the antibiotics sulfamethoxypyridazine (SMP) and enrofloxacin (ENR) in 20 agricultural soils devoted to wheat-potato and vine cultivation. Batch experiments were used to conduct kinetic studies, as well as to evaluate adsorption and desorption for different concentrations of antibiotics. The results indicated that adsorption curves were linear for SMP, while presented a certain curvature in the case of ENR. The adsorption of both antibiotics was fitted to a linear equation and to the Freundlich model. In the case of the linear equation, the values of the distribution coefficient K_d were lower for SMP (0.9-26.0 L kg^-1) than for ENR (121-2345 L kg^-1). In the Freundlich model, the values of the adsorption constant K_F ranged between 1.7 and 34.0 Lⁿ μmol^1-n kg^-1 for SMP, and between 829 and 3019 Lⁿ μmol^1-n kg^-1 for ENR. A multiple regression analysis showed that, in the case of SMP, 78% of the variance of the adsorption parameter K_d was explained by soil organic carbon (SOC) and exchangeable magnesium (Mg_e) contents, while for ENR no significant relation was found. In addition, for SMP, 66% of the variance of K_F was explained by SOC, and for ENR 45% of the variability of K_F was explained by nitrogen content. Desorption rates were higher for SMP (reaching up to 24%) than for ENR (which reached up to 7%). Desorption percentages showed a potential relation with the adsorption parameter K_d for both SMP and ENR. These results could be useful to elucidate the evolution and dynamics of these emerging pollutants in soils and other environmental compartments, which could be of aid in controlling public health risks associated to them.

Do DOM optical parameters improve the prediction of copper availability in vineyard soils?

Accumulation of copper (Cu) in soils due to the application of fungicides may be toxic for organisms and hence affect winegrowing sustainability. Soil parameters such as pH and dissolved organic matter (DOM) are known to affect the availability of Cu. In this study, we investigated the contribution of chromophoric and fluorescent DOM properties to the prediction of Cu availability in 18 organic vineyard soils in the Bordeaux winegrowing area (France). The DOM parameters, assessed through absorbance and fluorescence analyses, and proxies for Cu availability (total soluble Cu and free ionic Cu²⁺) were measured in 0.01 M KCl extracts. Total soluble Cu (Cu_KCl) varied 23-fold while free ionic Cu²⁺ varied by a factor of 4600 among the soils. DOC concentrations were similar among the soils, but the samples differed in the quality of DOM as assessed by optical spectroscopy. Multilinear regression models with and without DOM quality parameters were investigated to predict Cu availability. The best model for Cu_KCl successfully explained 83% of variance and included pH, Cu_T, and two DOM fluorescence quality indices, the FI fluorescence index, which distinguishes between microbial and higher plant origins, and the HIX humification index. For the prediction of Cu²⁺, pH alone explained 88% of variance and adding DOM parameters did not improve modelling. The two Cu availability proxies were related to pH. This study confirms the prominent role of pH in Cu availability and underlines the importance of DOM quality to better predict Cu solubility.

Changes in vineyard soil parameters after repeated application of organic-inorganic amendments based on spent mushroom substrate

The changes of physicochemical and biochemical parameters of a silty loam (S1) and sandy loam (S2) vineyard soils added with spent mushroom substrate (SMS) or SMS composted with ophite (OF) as rock dust (SMS + OF) were studied. Two doses of SMS or SMS + OF (25 and 100 Mg ha^-1) were applied for two consecutive years (2020-2021) and changes of soil physicochemical parameters, and dehydrogenase activity (DHA), respiration (RES), microbial biomass (BIO), and the phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) profile were assayed on a temporal basis. The results showed an increase in soil organic carbon (OC) content, total and mineralised N, P, and K, especially when the highest SMS dose was applied to soils. Repeated application caused OC content over time up to 2.3 times higher than initial content in the silty loam soil. This increase was not observed in sandy soil, possibly due to a higher bioavailability of OC, as indicated by the evolution of extractable humic acid/fulvic acid pools. In both soils, all biochemical parameters increased after amendment, being favoured both by the OC and by the presence of OF. Significant positive correlations were found between DHA, RES and BIO, and OC content especially in the first part and then levelled off after the second dose application. Total bacterial or fungal PLFAs patterns reflected the variation of BIO by SMS application. The higher growth of fungi vs. bacterial community in amended soils was recorded after the first SMS application, although the opposite effect occurred after the second application, with similar results in both soils. The findings indicate that the application of SMS or SMS + OF in vineyard soils could be an appropriate agronomic management practice for maintaining soil sustainability, although doses and application times of these amendments should first be evaluated depending on soil texture.

Copper and zinc in rhizospheric soil of wild plants growing in long-term acid vineyard soils. Insights on availability and metal remediation

Total and available Cu and Zn levels were assessed in plant biomass, as well as in two rhizosphere fractions (tightly adhering rhizosphere (TAR), and loosely adhering rhizosphere (LAR)), in wild plants species from vineyard soils. Both TAR and LAR fractions were enriched in total Cu and Zn (1.7 and 1.6 times, respectively), and in available Cu and Zn (2.2 and 19.5 times, respectively), with the former being significantly higher for TAR than for LAR fractions. Mean values for total Cu accumulation in root and aerial biomass of the studied wild plants were 84 and 66 mg kg^-1, respectively, being 57 and 79 mg kg^-1 for Zn. No correlations were found among metal contents in plant biomass and available Cu and Zn concentrations in the rhizosphere fractions. Translocation factor (TF) values for Zn (range 1.0-3.5) indicate preferential accumulation in the aerial biomass in all the studied wild plants. On the contrary, TF for Cu shows a greater variability, depending on plant species, and ranging from 0.2 to 5.9. Regarding bioaccumulation factor (BAF), ranges were 0.03-0.27 and 0.13-0.58, for Cu and Zn, respectively. Results suggest that D. sanguinalis, P. hieracioides, S. viridis, and T. barbata could be useful for Cu remediation in the studied soils, by means of phytostabilization processes.
