Client-Side Application of Deep Learning Models Through Teleradiology

Deep learning models for radiology are typically deployed either through cloud-based platforms, through on-premises infrastructures, or though heavyweight viewers. This tends to restrict the audience of deep learning models to radiologists working in state-of-the-art hospitals, which raises concerns about the democratization of deep learning for medical imaging, most notably in the context of research and education. We show that complex deep learning models can be applied directly inside Web browsers, without resorting to any external computation infrastructure, and we release our code as free and open-source software. This opens the path to the use of teleradiology solutions as an effective way to distribute, teach, and evaluate deep learning architectures.

Cloud-Native Workload Orchestration at the Edge: A Deployment Review and Future Directions

Cloud-native computing principles such as virtualization and orchestration are key to transferring to the promising paradigm of edge computing. Challenges of containerization, operative models and scarce availability of established tools make a thorough review indispensable. Therefore, the authors have described the practical methods and tools found in the literature as well as in current community-led development projects, and have thoroughly exposed the future directions of the field. Container virtualization and its orchestration through Kubernetes have dominated the cloud computing domain, while major efforts have been recently recorded focused on the adaptation of these technologies to the edge. Such initiatives have addressed either the reduction of container engines and the development of specific tailored operating systems or the development of smaller K8s distributions and edge-focused adaptations (such as KubeEdge). Finally, new workload virtualization approaches, such as WebAssembly modules together with the joint orchestration of these heterogeneous workloads, seem to be the topics to pay attention to in the short to medium term.

FPocketWeb: protein pocket hunting in a web browser

Detecting macromolecular (e.g., protein) cavities where small molecules bind is an early step in computer-aided drug discovery. Multiple pocket-detection algorithms have been developed over the past several decades. Among them, fpocket, created by Schmidtke and Le Guilloux, is particularly popular. Like many programs used in computational-biology research, fpocket requires users to download and install an executable file. That file must also be run via a command-line interface, further complicating use. An existing fpocket server application effectively addresses these challenges, but it requires users to upload their possibly proprietary structures to a third-party server. The FPocketWeb web app builds on this prior work. It runs the fpocket3 executable entirely in a web browser without requiring installation. The pocket-finding calculations occur on the user's computer rather than on a remote server. Chromatic: WebAssembly-Based Cancer Genome Viewer

Chromatic is a novel web-browser tool that enables researchers to visually inspect genomic variations identified through next-generation sequencing of cancer data sets to determine whether such calls are, in fact, valid. It is the first cancer bioinformatics tool developed using WebAssembly technology, which comprises a portable, low-level byte code format that provides for the rapid execution of programs within supported web browsers. It has been designed expressly for ease of use by scientists without extensive expertise in bioinformatics.
