Rapid visual dual-mode detection of Zr(IV) based on L-histidine functionalized gold nanoparticles

Heavy metal pollution has always been a great threat to human health and safety. Compared with other heavy metals, although zirconium ion (Zr(IV)) is equally harmful, due to the lack of research on Zr(IV) in the biological systems and environment, its detection does not seem to have received the attention it deserves. Herein, a rapid visual dual-mode detection (colorimetric and chrominance method) of Zr(IV) based on L-histidine functionalized gold nanoparticles (HIS-AuNPs) has been reported. AuNPs and HIS-AuNPs before and after adding Zr(IV) were characterized by UV-Vis, TEM, DLS, Zeta potential, EDS and FT-IR, etc. These results showed that L-histidine was successfully modified on the surface of AuNPs by forming a stable Au-N bond, and its modification had little effect on the dispersion degree of AuNPs. After the addition of Zr(IV), interaction of this metal ion with the imidazolyl group on L-histidine can obviously cause the aggregation of HIS-AuNPs within 12 min, and the dispersion state and particle size of HIS-AuNPs can be significantly changed. These two detection modes were established by means of absorbance and color change of solution, and being used in addition and recovery experiments of Zr(IV) in natural water. Under the optimal conditions, these two modes exhibited good linearity within 15-70 and 20-100 μmol L-1, and limit of detection of 2.62 and 6.25 μmol L-1. The proposed method was highly sensitive and selective, which provided a new convenient way to realize the detection of Zr(IV).

Synthesis, structural, optical and anti-rheumatic activity of metal complexes derived from (E)-2-amino-N-(1-(2-aminophenyl)ethylidene)benzohydrazide (2-AAB) with Ru(III), Pd(II) and Zr(IV)

Three new metal complexes derived from Pd(II), Ru(III) and Zr(IV) with (E)-2-amino-N-(1-(2-aminophenyl)ethylidene)benzohydrazide (2-AAB) have been synthesized. The isolated complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, UV-Vis, ES-MS, (1)H NMR, XRD, thermal analyses (TGA and DTA) and conductance. The morphology and the particle size were determined by transmittance electron microscope (TEM). The results showed that, the ligand coordinates to Pd(II) in the enol form, while it coordinates to Ru(III) and Zr(IV) in the keto form. A square planar geometry is suggested for Pd(II) complex and octahedral geometries are suggested for Ru(III) and Zr(IV) complexes. The optical band gaps of the isolated complexes were measured and indicated the semi-conductivity nature of the complexes. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of the ligand and its complexes showed that, Ru(III) complex has higher effect than the well known drug "meloxicam".

Preparation of zirconium oxy ion-imprinted particle for the selective separation of trace zirconium ion from water

Zr(IV) oxy ion-imprinted particle (Zr-IIP) was prepared using the metal ion imprinting technique in a sol-gel process on the surface of amino-silica. The dosages of zirconium ions as imprinted target, (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) as a functional monomer and teraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a cross-linker were optimized. The prepared Zr-IIP and Zr(IV) oxy ion non-imprinted particle (Zr-NIP) were characterized. pH effect, binding ability and the selectivity were investigated in detail. The results showed that the Zr-IIP had an excellent binding capacity and selectivity in the water. The equilibrium data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir model for Zr(IV) binding onto Zr-IIP, respectively. The saturate binding capacity of Zr-IIP was found to be 196.08 μmol g(-1), which was 18 times higher than that of Zr-NIP. The sequence of binding efficiency of Zr-IIP for various ions was Zr(IV)>Cu(II)>Sb(III)>Eu(III). The coordination number has an important effect on the dimensional binding capacity. The equilibrium binding capacity of Zr-IIP for Zr(IV) decreased little under various concentrations of Pb(II) ions. The analysis of relative selectivity coefficient (Kr) indicated that the Zr-IIP had an appreciable binding specificity towards Zr(IV) although the competitive ions coexisted in the water. The Zr-IIP could serve as an efficient selective material for recovering or removing zirconium from the water environment.

Visual and surface plasmon resonance sensor for zirconium based on zirconium-induced aggregation of adenosine triphosphate-stabilized gold nanoparticles

Owing to its high affinity with phosphate, Zr(IV) can induce the aggregation of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP)-stabilized AuNPs, leading to the change of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption spectra and color of ATP-stabilized AuNP solutions. Based on these phenomena, visual and SPR sensors for Zr(IV) have been developed for the first time. The A(660 nm)/A(518 nm) values of ATP-stabilized AuNPs in SPR absorption spectra increase linearly with the concentrations of Zr(IV) from 0.5 μM to 100 μM (r=0.9971) with a detection limit of 95 nM. A visual Zr(IV) detection is achieved with a detection limit of 30 μM. The sensor shows excellent selectivity against other metal ions, such as Cu(2+), Fe(3+), Cd(2+), and Pb(2+). The recoveries for the detection of 5 μM, 10 μM, 25 μM and 75 μM Zr(IV) in lake water samples are 96.0%, 97.0%, 95.6% and 102.4%, respectively. The recoveries of the proposed SPR method are comparable with those of ICP-OES method.
