Possible charge ordering and anomalous transport in graphene/graphene quantum dot heterostructure

Observations of superconductivity and charge density waves (CDW) in graphene have been elusive thus far due to weak electron-phonon coupling (EPC) interactions. Here, we report a unique observation of anomalous transport and multiple charge ordering phases at high temperatures (T1∼213K,T2∼325K) in a 0D-2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure comprising of single layer graphene (SLG) and functionalized (amine) graphene quantum dots (GQD). The presence of functionalized GQD contributed to charge transfer with shifting of the Dirac point ∼ 0.05 eV above the Fermi level (ab initio   simulations) and carrier densityn∼-0.3×1012 cm-2confirming p-doping in SLG and two-fold increase in EPC interaction was achieved. Moreover, we elucidate the interplay between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions to substantiate high temperature EPC driven charge ordering in the heterostructure through analyses of magnetotransport and weak anti-localization (WAL) framework. Our results provide impetus to investigate strongly correlated phenomena such as CDW and superconducting phase transitions in novel graphene based heterostructures.

Favoring Product Desorption by a Tailored Electronic Environment of Oxygen Vacancies in SrTiO3 via Cr Doping for Enhanced and Selective Electrocatalytic CO2 to CO Conversion

The electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (ECO₂RR) into value-added products is crucial to address the herculean task of CO₂ mitigation. Several efforts are being made to develop active ECO₂RR catalysts, targeting enhanced CO₂ adsorption and activation. A rational design of ECO₂RR catalysts with a facile product desorption step is seldom reported. Herein, ensuing the Sabatier principle, we report a strategy for an enhanced ECO₂RR with a faradaic efficiency of 85% for CO production by targeting the product desorption step. The energy barrier for product desorption was lowered via a tailored electronic environment of oxygen vacancies (O_vac) in Cr-doped SrTiO₃. The substitutional doping of Cr³⁺ for Ti⁴⁺ into the SrTiO₃ lattice favors the generation of more O_vac and modifies the local electronic environment. Density functional theory analysis evinces the spontaneous dissociation of COOH^# intermediates over O_vac and lower CO intermediate binding on O_vac reducing the energy demand for CO release due to Cr doping.

Computation of the Binding Energies between Human ACE2 and Spike RBDs of the Original Strain, Delta and Omicron Variants of the SARS-CoV-2: A DFT Simulation Approach

The receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2 binds to human ACE2 leading to infection. In this study, the complexes that are formed by the attachment of the SARS-CoV-2 spike RBDs of the original strain, delta and omicron variants to the human ACE2 are investigated via density functional theory (DFT) simulations to obtain binding energies. The DFT computations are performed without fragmenting the interfaces to involve longer-range interactions for improved accuracy, which is one of the primary features of the approach used in this study. Basis set superposition error corrections and van der Waals dispersions are also included in the DFT simulations. The binding energies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike RBDs of the original strain, delta and omicron variants to the human ACE2 are computed as -4.76, -6.68, and -11.77 eV, respectively. These binding energy values indicate that the binding of the omicron variant to the ACE2 is much more favorable than the binding of the original strain and the delta variant, which constitute a molecular reason for the takeover of the omicron variant. The binding energies and the decomposition of these energies found in this study are expected to aid in the development of neutralizing agents.

First-Principles Simulation of Dielectric Function in Biomolecules

The dielectric spectra of complex biomolecules reflect the molecular heterogeneity of the proteins and are particularly important for the calculations of electrostatic (Coulomb) and electrodynamic (van der Waals) interactions in protein physics. The dielectric response of the proteins can be decomposed into different components depending on the size, structure, composition, locality, and environment of the protein in general. We present a new robust simulation method anchored in rigorous ab initio quantum mechanical calculations of explicit atomistic models, without any indeterminate parameters to compute and gain insight into the dielectric spectra of small proteins under different conditions. We implement this methodology to a polypeptide RGD-4C (1FUV) in different environments, and the SD1 domain in the spike protein of SARS-COV-2. Two peaks at 5.2-5.7 eV and 14.4-15.2 eV in the dielectric absorption spectra are observed for 1FUV and SD1 in vacuum as well as in their solvated and salted models.

Phototribology: Control of Friction by Light

In dry sliding, the coefficient of friction depends on the material pair and contact conditions. If the material and operating conditions remain unchanged, the coefficient of friction is constant. Obviously, we can tune friction by surface treatments, but it is a nonreversible process. Here, we report active control of friction forces on TiO₂ thin films under UV light. It is reversible and stable and can be tuned/controlled with the light wavelength. The analysis of atomic force microscopy signals by wavelet spectrograms reveals different mechanisms acting in the darkness and under UV. Ab initio simulations on UV light-exposed TiO₂ show a lower atomic orbital overlapping on the surface, which leads to a friction reduction of up to 60%. We suggest that photocontrol of friction is due to the modification of atomic orbital interactions from both surfaces at the sliding interface.

Melting of CaSiO3 Perovskite at High Pressure

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations predict that CaSiO3 perovskite melts at 5600 K at 136 GPa, and 6400 K at 300 GPa, significantly higher than MgSiO3 perovskite. The entropy of melting (1.8 kB per atom) is much larger than that of many silicates at ambient pressure and of simple liquids and varies little with pressure. The volume of melting decreases rapidly with increasing pressure, to 3 % at 136 GPa, producing a melting slope that diminishes rapidly with pressure. We determine the melting temperature via the ZW method, combining the Z method, for which we clarify the theoretical basis, with a waiting time analysis. The ZW method results are internally confirmed by integrating the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, which also yields our results for the entropy and volume of melting. We find the eutectic composition on the MgSiO3-CaSiO3 join to be x Ca = 0.26 at 136 GPa and that metasilicate melt is denser than coexisting silicates.

Identifying the Role of Dynamic Surface Hydroxides in the Dehydrogenation of Ti-Doped NaAlH4

Solid-state metal hydrides are prime candidates to replace compressed hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles due to their high volumetric capacities. Sodium aluminum hydride has long been studied as an archetype for higher-capacity metal hydrides, with improved reversibility demonstrated through the addition of titanium catalysts; however, atomistic mechanisms for surface processes, including hydrogen desorption, are still uncertain. Here, operando and ex situ measurements from a suite of diagnostic tools probing multiple length scales are combined with ab initio simulations to provide a detailed and unbiased view of the evolution of the surface chemistry during hydrogen release. In contrast to some previously proposed mechanisms, the titanium dopant does not directly facilitate desorption at the surface. Instead, oxidized surface species, even on well-protected NaAlH₄ samples, evolve during dehydrogenation to form surface hydroxides with differing levels of hydrogen saturation. Additionally, the presence of these oxidized species leads to considerably lower computed barriers for H₂ formation compared to pristine hydride surfaces, suggesting that oxygen may actively participate in hydrogen release, rather than merely inhibiting diffusion as is commonly presumed. These results demonstrate how close experiment-theory feedback can elucidate mechanistic understanding of complex metal hydride chemistry and potentially impactful roles of unavoidable surface impurities.

Charge Transport and the Nature of Traps in Oxygen Deficient Tantalum Oxide

Optical and transport properties of nonstoichiometric tantalum oxide thin films grown by ion beam deposition were investigated in order to understand the dominant charge transport mechanisms and reveal the nature of traps. The TaO_x films composition was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and by quantum-chemistry simulation. From the optical absorption and photoluminescence measurements and density functional theory simulations, it was concluded that the 2.75 eV blue luminescence excited in a TaO_x by 4.45 eV photons, originates from oxygen vacancies. These vacancies are also responsible for TaO_x conductivity. The thermal trap energy of 0.85 eV determined from the transport experiments coincides with the half of the Stokes shift of the blue luminescence band. It is argued that the dominant charge transport mechanism in TaO_x films is phonon-assisted tunneling between the traps.

Formation of Zintl Ions and Their Configurational Change during Sodiation in Na-Sn Battery

Despite their large theoretical storage capability, Na-Sn batteries exhibit poor round-trip energy efficiencies as compared to Li-Si batteries. Here, we report the results of a comprehensive study to elucidate how and why Na-Sn batteries exhibit such a low energy efficiency. As a convincing evidence for this behavior, we observed that the resistivity of the Sn anode increased by 8 orders of magnitude during in situ sodiation experiments, which is attributed to the formation of electrically resistive Zintl ions in the sodiated Sn. Continual sodiation induced the development of residual stresses at the Sn anode and caused the distortion of Zintl ions from their ideal configuration. This distortion caused a change in the electronic structure, resulting in the increased resistivity of the sodiated Sn. Our findings offer some solutions that can be used to improve the energy efficiency of Na-Sn batteries.

Ab initio simulation of diffractometer instrumental function for high-resolution X-ray diffraction

A method for the simulation of the diffractometer instrumental function for high-resolution X-ray diffraction, applicable for coplanar and noncoplanar measurement geometry and for any combination of X-ray optical elements, is proposed. Good agreement is demonstrated between the measured and the simulated reciprocal-space maps, which account for the instrumental function.

Modeling of the X-ray diffractometer instrumental function for a given optics configuration is important both for planning experiments and for the analysis of measured data. A fast and universal method for instrumental function simulation, suitable for fully automated computer realization and describing both coplanar and noncoplanar measurement geometries for any combination of X-ray optical elements, is proposed. The method can be identified as semi-analytical backward ray tracing and is based on the calculation of a detected signal as an integral of X-ray intensities for all the rays reaching the detector. The high speed of calculation is provided by the expressions for analytical integration over the spatial coordinates that describe the detection point. Consideration of the three-dimensional propagation of rays without restriction to the diffraction plane provides the applicability of the method for noncoplanar geometry and the accuracy for characterization of the signal from a two-dimensional detector. The correctness of the simulation algorithm is checked in the following two ways: by verifying the consistency of the calculated data with the patterns expected for certain simple limiting cases and by comparing measured reciprocal-space maps with the corresponding maps simulated by the proposed method for the same diffractometer configurations. Both kinds of tests demonstrate the agreement of the simulated instrumental function shape with the measured data.

Anatomy of the Photochemical Reaction: Excited-State Dynamics Reveals the C-H Acidity Mechanism of Methoxy Photo-oxidation on Titania

Light-driven chemical reactions on semiconductor surfaces have potential for addressing energy and pollution needs through efficient chemical synthesis; however, little is known about the time evolution of excited states that determine reaction pathways. Here, we study the photo-oxidation of methoxy (CH3O) derived from methanol on the rutile TiO2(110) surface using ab initio simulations to create a molecular movie of the process. The movie sequence reveals a wealth of information on the reaction intermediates, time scales, and energetics. The reaction is broken in three stages, described by Lewis structures directly derived from the "hole" wave functions that lead to the concept of "photoinduced C-H acidity". The insights gained from this work can be generalized to a set of simple rules that can predict the efficiency of photo-oxidation reactions in reactant-catalyst pairs.

Potential-induced electronic structure changes in supercapacitor electrodes observed by in operando soft X-ray spectroscopy

The dynamic physiochemical response of a functioning graphene-based aerogel supercapacitor is monitored in operando by soft X-ray spectroscopy and interpreted through ab initio atomistic simulations. Unanticipated changes in the electronic structure of the electrode as a function of applied voltage bias indicate structural modifications across multiple length scales via independent pseudocapacitive and electric double layer charge storage channels.

Poly(dimethyltin glutarate) as a prospective material for high dielectric applications

Poly(dimethyltin glutarate) is presented as the first organometallic polymer, a high dielectric constant, and low dielectric loss material. Theoretical results correspond well in terms of the dielectric constant. More importantly, the dielectric constant can be tuned depending on the solvent a film of the polymer is cast from. The breakdown strength is increased through blending with a second organometallic polymer.

Accelerating the design of solar thermal fuel materials through high throughput simulations

Solar thermal fuels (STF) store the energy of sunlight, which can then be released later in the form of heat, offering an emission-free and renewable solution for both solar energy conversion and storage. However, this approach is currently limited by the lack of low-cost materials with high energy density and high stability. In this Letter, we present an ab initio high-throughput computational approach to accelerate the design process and allow for searches over a broad class of materials. The high-throughput screening platform we have developed can run through large numbers of molecules composed of earth-abundant elements and identifies possible metastable structures of a given material. Corresponding isomerization enthalpies associated with the metastable structures are then computed. Using this high-throughput simulation approach, we have discovered molecular structures with high isomerization enthalpies that have the potential to be new candidates for high-energy density STF. We have also discovered physical principles to guide further STF materials design through structural analysis. More broadly, our results illustrate the potential of using high-throughput ab initio simulations to design materials that undergo targeted structural transitions.
