Chiral Canoe-Like Pd0 or Pt0 Alloyed Copper Alkynyl Nanoclusters Display Near-Infrared Luminescence

Alloying nanoclusters (NCs) has emerged as a widely explored and versatile strategy for tailoring tunable properties, facilitating in-depth atomic-level investigations of structure-property correlations. In this study, we have successfully synthesized six atomically precise copper NCs alloyed with Group 10 metals (Pd or Pt). Notably, the Pd0 or Pt0 atom situated at the center of the distorted hexagonal antiprism Pd0/Pt0@Cu12 cage, coordinated with twelve Cu+ and two tBuC≡C- ligands. Moreover, ligand exchange strategies demonstrated the potential for Cl- and Br- to replace one or two alkynyl ligands positioned at the top or side of the NCs. The chirality exhibited by these racemic NCs is primarily attributed to the involvement of halogens and a chiral (Pd/Pt)@Cu18 skeleton. Furthermore, all the NCs exhibit near-infrared (NIR) luminescence, characterized by emission peaks at 705-755 nm, lifetimes ranging from 6.630 to 9.662 μs, and absolute photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 1.75 %-2.52 % in their crystalline state. The experimental optical properties of these NCs are found to be in excellent agreement with the results of theoretical calculations. These alloy NCs not only offer valuable insights into the synthesis of Pd0/Pt0-Cu alloy NCs, but also bridge the gap in understanding the structure-luminescence relationships of Pd0/Pt0-Cu molecules.

Pd8(PDip)6: Cubic, Unsaturated, Zerovalent

Atomically precise nanoclusters hold promise for supramolecular assembly and (opto)electronic- as well as magnetic materials. Herein, this work reports that treating palladium(0) precursors with a triphosphirane affords strongly colored Pd8(PDip)6 that is fully characterized by mass spectrometry, heteronuclear and Cross-Polarization Magic-Angle Spinning (CP-MAS) NMR-, infrared (IR), UV-vis, and X-ray photoelectron (XP) spectroscopies, single-crystal X-Ray diffraction (sc-XRD), mass spectrometry, and cyclovoltammetry (CV). This coordinatively unsaturated 104-electron Pd(0) cluster features a cubic Pd8-core, µ4-capping phosphinidene ligands, and is air-stable. Quantum chemical calculations provide insight to the cluster's electronic structure and suggest 5s/4d orbital mixing as well as minor Pd─P covalency. Trapping experiments reveal that cluster growth proceeds via insertion of Pd(0) into the triphosphirane. The unsaturated cluster senses ethylene and binds isocyanides, which triggers the rearrangement to a tetrahedral structure with a reduced frontier orbital energy gap. These experiments demonstrate facile cluster manipulation and highlight non-destructive cluster rearrangement as is required for supramolecular assembly.

Atomically Precise Nanometer-Sized Pt Catalysts with an Additional Photothermy Functionality

Atomically precise ~1-nm Pt nanoparticles (nanoclusters, NCs) with ambient stability are important in fundamental research and exhibit diverse practical applications (catalysis, biomedicine, etc.). However, synthesizing such materials is challenging. Herein, by employing the mixture ligand protecting strategy, we successfully synthesized the largest organic-ligand-protected (~1-nm) Pt23 NCs precisely characterized with mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Interestingly, natural population analysis and Bader charge calculation indicate an alternate, varying charge -layer distribution in the sandwich-like Pt23 NC kernel. Pt23 NCs can catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction under acidic conditions without requiring calcination and other treatments, and the resulting specific and mass activities without further treatment are sevenfold and eightfold higher than those observed for commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. Density functional theory and d-band center calculations interpret the high activity. Furthermore, Pt23 NCs exhibit a photothermal conversion efficiency of 68.4 % under 532-nm laser irradiation and can be used at least for six cycles, thus demonstrating great potential for practical applications.

Water-Soluble Au25 Clusters with Single-Crystal Structure for Mitochondria-Targeting Radioimmunotherapy

Atomically precise gold clusters play an important role in the development of high-Z-element-based radiosensitizers, due to their intriguing structural diversity and advantages in correlating structures and properties. However, the synthesis of gold clusters with both water-solubility and single-crystal structure remains a challenge. In this study, atomically precise Au₂₅(S-TPP)₁₈ clusters (TPP-SNa = sodium 3-(triphenylphosphonio)propane-1-thiolate bromide) showing both mitochondria-targeting ability and water-solubility were obtained via ligand design for enhanced radioimmunotherapy. Compared with Au₂₅(SG)₁₈ clusters (SG = glutathione), Au₂₅(S-TPP)₁₈ exhibited higher radiosensitization efficiency due to its mitochondria-targeting ability, higher ROS production capacity, and obvious inhibition upon thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). In addition, the enhanced radiotherapy-triggered abscopal effect in combination with checkpoint blockade displayed effective growth inhibition of distant tumors. This work reveals the ligand-regulated organelle targeting ability of metal clusters by which feasible strategies to promote their application in precise theranostics could be realized.

Redox-Switchable Allosteric Effects in Molecular Clusters

We demonstrate that allosteric effects and redox state changes can be harnessed to create a switch that selectively and reversibly regulates the coordination chemistry of a single site on the surface of a molecular cluster. This redox-switchable allostery is employed as a guiding force to assemble the molecular clusters Zn₃Co₆Se₈L'₆ (L' = Ph₂PN(H)Tol, Ph = phenyl, Tol = 4-tolyl) into materials of predetermined dimensionality (1- or 2-D) and to encode them with emissive properties. This work paves the path to program the assembly and function of inorganic clusters into stimuli-responsive, atomically precise materials.

Core/Shell Magic-Sized CdSe Nanocrystals

Magic-sized semiconductor nanocrystals (MSNCs) grow via discrete jumps between specific sizes. Despite their potential to offer atomically precise structures, their use has been limited by poor stability and trap-dominated photoluminescence. Recently, CdSe MSNCs have been grown to larger sizes. We exploit such particles and demonstrate a method to grow shells on CdSe MSNC cores via high-temperature synthesis. Thin CdS shells lead to dramatic improvements in the emissive properties of the MSNCs, narrowing their fluorescence line widths, enhancing photoluminescence quantum yields, and eliminating trap emission. Although thicker CdS shells lead to decreased performance, Cd_xZn_1-xS alloyed shells maintain efficient and narrow emission lines. These alloyed core/shell crystallites exhibit a tetrahedral shape, in agreement with a recent model for MSNC growth. Our results indicate that MSNCs can compete with other state-of-the-art semiconductor nanocrystals. Furthermore, these core/shell structures will allow further study of MSNCs and their potential for atomically precise growth.

Anomalous phonon relaxation in Au333(SR)79 nanoparticles with nascent plasmons

Research on plasmons of gold nanoparticles has gained broad interest in nanoscience. However, ultrasmall sizes near the metal-to-nonmetal transition regime have not been explored until recently due to major synthetic difficulties. Herein, intriguing electron dynamics in this size regime is observed in atomically precise Au₃₃₃(SR)₇₉ nanoparticles. Femtosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy reveals an unprecedented relaxation process of 4-5 ps-a fast phonon-phonon relaxation process, together with electron-phonon coupling (∼1 ps) and normal phonon-phonon coupling (>100 ps) processes. Three types of -R capped Au₃₃₃(SR)₇₉ all exhibit two plasmon-bleaching signals independent of the -R group as well as solvent, indicating plasmon splitting and quantum effect in the ultrasmall core of Au₃₃₃(SR)₇₉ This work is expected to stimulate future work on the transition-size regime of nanometals and discovery of behavior of nascent plasmons.

Intramolecular Metal Exchange Reaction Promoted by Thiol Ligands

The synthesis of an alloy nanocluster that is atomically precise is the key to understanding the metal synergy effect at the atomic level. Using the Ag₂Au₂₅(SR)₁₈ nanocluster as a model, we reported a third approach for the metal exchange reaction, that is, intramolecular metal exchange. The surface adsorbed metal ions (i.e., Ag) can be exchanged with the kernel metal atoms (i.e., Au) that are promoted by thiol ligands. The exchanged gold atoms can be further stripped by the thiol ligands, and produce the Ag_xAu_25-x(SR)₁₈^- nanocluster.

Large-Scale Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Optical Properties of the Ag146Br2(SR)80 Nanocluster

Solving the atomic structure of large-sized metal nanoclusters is a highly challenging task yet critically important for understanding the properties and developing applications. Herein, we report a stable silver nanocluster-Ag₁₄₆Br₂(SR)₈₀ (where SR = 4-isopropylbenzenethiolate)-with its structure solved by X-ray crystallography. Gram-scale synthesis with high yield has been achieved by a one-pot reaction, which offers opportunities for functionalization and applications. This silver nanocluster possesses a core-shell structure with a Ag₅₁ core surrounded by a shell of Ag₉₅Br₂S₈₀. The Ag₅₁ core can be viewed as a distorted decahedron, endowing this nanocluster with quantized electronic transitions. In the surface-protecting layer, five different types of S-Ag coordination modes are observed, ranging from the linear Ag-S-Ag to S-Ag₃ (triangle) and S-Ag₄ (square). Furthermore, temperature-dependent optical absorption and ultrafast electron dynamics are conducted to explore the relationship between the properties and structure, demonstrating that the distorted metal core and "flying saucer"-like shape of this nanocluster have significant effects on the electronic behavior. A comparison with multiple sizes of Ag nanoclusters also provides some insights into the evolution from molecular to metallic behavior.

Atomically precise cluster catalysis towards quantum controlled catalysts

Catalysis of atomically precise clusters supported on a substrate is reviewed in relation to the type of reactions. The catalytic activity of supported clusters has generally been discussed in terms of electronic structure. Several lines of evidence have indicated that the electronic structure of clusters and the geometry of clusters on a support, including the accompanying cluster-support interaction, are strongly correlated with catalytic activity. The electronic states of small clusters would be easily affected by cluster-support interactions. Several studies have suggested that it is possible to tune the electronic structure through atomic control of the cluster size. It is promising to tune not only the number of cluster atoms, but also the hybridization between the electronic states of the adsorbed reactant molecules and clusters in order to realize a quantum-controlled catalyst.
