The impact of fruit thinning on size and quality of fresh-market muscadine berries

BACKGROUND

Achieving a larger berry size accompanied with even ripening are demanded by producers in growing muscadine cultivars. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of fruit thinning on berry size and quality in two muscadine grape cultivars, 'Triumph' a bronze-fruited cultivar bearing hermaphrodite flowers, and 'Supreme' a dark black-fruited cultivar bearing female flowers. Thinning was performed before bunch closure and only one cluster per cane was retained.

RESULTS

Results indicated a significant interaction of treatments and cultivars on berry weight and berry diameter. In 'Supreme,' berry weight and berry diameter were significantly increased where thinning was performed, and difference in plant yield between thinned and not thinned vines was not significant. For 'Triumph,' thinning had no significant impact on berry weight and diameter, but yield was ultimately reduced. Other physico-chemical characters were not affected by fruit thinning. However, differences were observed between both cultivars for these characters. The values of antioxidant scavenging activity (ASA) and total phenolic content (TPC) were 62.7% and 21.7% higher in 'Supreme' as compared to 'Triumph,' irrespective of the thinning treatments. Being a colored cultivar, 'Supreme' berries have higher anthocyanins than 'Triumph,' which has a negligible amount of anthocyanins. The ASA exhibited a strong positive correlation with TPC and anthocyanin content of muscadine grapes. There was also a significant positive correlation between TPC and anthocyanins.

CONCLUSION

Cluster thinning of some muscadine grape cultivars may improve individual berry size without affecting overall plant yield or the fruit color, firmness, biochemical attributes and bioactive compounds. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Grape Small Auxin Upregulated RNA (SAUR) 041 Is a Candidate Regulator of Berry Size in Grape

Grape (Vitis vinifera) is an important horticultural crop that can be used to make juice and wine. However, the small size of the berry limits its yield. Cultivating larger berry varieties can be an effective way to solve this problem. As the largest family of auxin early response genes, SAUR (small auxin upregulated RNA) plays an important role in the growth and development of plants. Berry size is one of the important factors that determine grape quality. However, the SAUR gene family’s function in berry size of grape has not been studied systematically. We identified 60 SAUR members in the grape genome and divided them into 12 subfamilies based on phylogenetic analysis. Subsequently, we conducted a comprehensive and systematic analysis on the SAUR gene family by analyzing distribution of key amino acid residues in the domain, structural features, conserved motifs, and protein interaction network, and combined with the heterologous expression in Arabidopsis and tomato. Finally, the member related to grape berry size in SAUR gene family were screened. This genome-wide study provides a systematic analysis of grape SAUR gene family, further understanding the potential functions of candidate genes, and provides a new idea for grape breeding.

Impact of berry size at harvest on red wine composition: a winemaker's approach

BACKGROUND

A classical postulate of viticulture declares that small grape berries produce the best red wines. The popularity of this postulate among winemakers leads them to consider berry size at harvest as a tool to measure the grape's potential to obtain great red wines. To address this issue, two vineyards from the same cultivar and subjected to the same physiological conditions during growing were selected for their difference in average grape berry size at harvest. Grapes from both origins were characterized and used for red winemaking by the same way. Release of volatile compounds and phenolic compounds during the alcoholic fermentation was monitored, and the finished wines were chemically characterized.

RESULTS

Larger grapes have a lower theoretical surface-to-volume ratio but have thicker skins and a greater proportion of skins (m/m). Wines made from grapes with a greater proportion of skins contain higher amounts of phenolic compounds, terpenes, volatile acids, acetate esters and polysaccharides.

CONCLUSION

According to the results, it seems that grape skin extraction is more related to skin proportion than to berry size. Thus not always smaller grapes produce darker red wines. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Deconvoluting effects of vine and soil properties on grape berry composition

BACKGROUND

Grape berry composition is influenced by several factors including grapevine and soil properties and their interactions. Understanding how these factors interact to determine berry composition is integral to producing berries with desired composition. Here we used extensive spatio-temporal data to identify significant vine and soil features that influence Shiraz berry composition.

RESULTS

The concentrations of berry flavonoids (anthocyanins, tannin and total phenolics), total soluble solids and pH were typically negatively associated with canopy, crop and berry size factors whereas titratable acidity was positively associated. The strengths of the associations, however, were generally greater with the crop and berry size factors than with the canopy size factor. The analyses also resolved separate influences of berry and crop size on berry composition. Soil properties had significant influences on berry composition; however, when influences of soil factors on vine-attributes were accounted for, the apparent effects of soil factors on berry composition were largely non-existent.

CONCLUSION

At each site, variations in berry composition were more strongly associated with crop and berry size than with canopy size factors. Apparent influences of soil properties on berry composition are indirect, being mediated via their effects on vine attributes (canopy, crop and berry sizes).

Haplotype diversity of VvTFL1A gene and association with cluster traits in grapevine (V. vinifera)

BACKGROUND

Interaction between TERMINAL FLOWER 1 (TFL1) and LEAFY (LFY) seem to determine the inflorescence architecture in Arabidopsis. In a parallel way, overexpression of VvTFL1A, a grapevine TFL1 homolog, causes delayed flowering and production of a ramose cluster in the reiterated reproductive meristem (RRM) somatic variant of cultivar Carignan. To analyze the possible contribution of this gene to cluster phenotypic variation in a diversity panel of cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. subsp. vinifera) its nucleotide diversity was characterized and association analyses among detected sequence polymorphisms and phenology and cluster traits was carried out.

RESULTS

A total of 3.6 kb of the VvTFL1A gene, including its promoter, was sequenced in a core collection of 140 individuals designed to maximize phenotypic variation at agronomical relevant traits. Nucleotide variation for VvTFL1A within this collection was higher in the promoter and intron sequences than in the exon regions; where few polymorphisms were located in agreement with a high conservation of coding sequence. Characterization of the VvTFL1A haplotype network identified three major haplogroups, consistent with the geographic origins and the use of the cultivars that could correspond to three major ancestral alleles or evolutionary branches, based on the existence of mutations in linkage disequilibrium. Genetic association studies with cluster traits revealed the presence of major INDEL polymorphisms, explaining 16%, 13% and 25% of flowering time, cluster width and berry weight, respectively, and also structuring the three haplogroups.

CONCLUSIONS

At least three major VvTFL1A haplogroups are present in cultivated grapevines, which are defined by the presence of three main polymorphism LD blocks and associated to characteristic phenotypic values for flowering time, cluster width and berry size. Phenotypic differences between haplogroups are consistent with differences observed between Eastern and Western grapevine cultivars and could result from the use of different genetic pools in the domestication process as well as different selection pressures on the development of table and wine cultivars, respectively. Altogether, these results are coherent with previous classifications of grapevine phenotypic diversity mainly based on cluster and berry morphotypes as well as with recent results on the structure of genetic diversity in cultivated grapevine.
