Impact of Nanoparticle Size and Surface Chemistry on Peptoid Self-Assembly

Self-assembled organic nanomaterials can be generated by bottom-up assembly pathways where the structure is controlled by the organic sequence and altered using pH, temperature, and solvation. In contrast, self-assembled structures based on inorganic nanoparticles typically rely on physical packing and drying effects to achieve uniform superlattices. By combining these two chemistries to access inorganic-organic nanostructures, we aim to understand the key factors that govern the assembly pathway and structural outcomes in hybrid systems. In this work, we outline two assembly regimes between quantum dots (QDs) and reversibly binding peptoids. These regimes can be accessed by changing the solubility and size of the hybrid (peptoid-QD) monomer unit. The hybrid monomers are prepared via ligand exchange and assembled, and the resulting assemblies are studied using ex-situ transmission electron microscopy as a function of assembly time. In aqueous conditions, QDs were found to stabilize certain morphologies of peptoid intermediates and generate a final product consisting of multilayers of small peptoid sheets linked by QDs. The QDs were also seen to facilitate or inhibit assembly in organic solvents based on the relative hydrophobicity of the surface ligands, which ultimately dictated the solubility of the hybrid monomer unit. Increasing the size of the QDs led to large hybrid sheets with regions of highly ordered square-packed QDs. A second, smaller QD species can also be integrated to create binary hybrid lattices. These results create a set of design principles for controlling the structure and structural evolution of hybrid peptoid-QD assemblies and contribute to the predictive synthesis of complex hybrid matter.

How Exciton and Single Carriers Block the Excitonic Transition in Two-Dimensional Cadmium Chalcogenide Nanoplatelets

Cadmium chalcogenide nanoplatelets (NPLs) possess unique properties and have shown great potential in lasing, light-emitting diodes, and photocatalytic applications. However, the exact natures of the band-edge exciton and single carrier (electron and hole) states remain unclear, even though they affect the key properties and applications of these materials. Herein, we study the contribution of a single carrier (electron or hole) state to phase space filling of single exciton states of cadmium chalcogenide NPLs. With pump fluence dependent TA study and selective electron removal, we determine that a single electron and hole states contribute 85% and 12%, respectively, to the blocking of the excitonic transition in CdSe/ZnS core/shell NPLs. These observations can be rationalized by a model of band-edge exciton and single carrier states of 2D NPLs that differs significantly from that of quantum dots.

Observation of an Orientational Glass in a Superlattice of Elliptically-Faceted CdSe Nanocrystals

Extensive prior work has shown that colloidal inorganic nanocrystals coated with organic ligand shells can behave as artificial atoms and, as such, form superlattices with different crystal structures and packing densities. Although ordered superlattices present a high degree of long-range positional order, the relative crystallographic orientation of the inorganic nanocrystals with respect to each other tends to be random. Recent works have shown that superlattices can achieve orientational alignment through combinations of nanocrystal faceting and ligand modification, as well as selective metal particle attachment to particular facets. These studies have focused on the assembly of high-symmetry nanocrystals, such as cubes and cuboctahedra. Here, we study the assembly of elliptically faceted CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals with one distinctive crystallographic orientation along the major elliptical axis. We show that the nanocrystals form an unexpectedly well-ordered translational superlattice, with a degree of order comparable to that achieved with higher-symmetry nanocrystals. Additionally, we show that, due to the particles' faceted shape, the superlattice is characterized by an orientational glass phase in which only certain orientations are possible due to entropically frustrated crystallization. In this phase, the nanocrystals do not exhibit a local orientational ordering but rather have distinct orientations that emerge at different locations within the same domain. The distinct orientations are a result of a facet-to-facet lock-in mechanism that occurs during the self-assembly process. These facet-to-facet alignments force the nanocrystals to tilt on different lattice planes forming different projections that we termed apparent polydispersity. Our experimental realization of an orientational glass phase for multifaceted semiconducting nanocrystals can be used to investigate how this phase is formed and how it can be utilized for potential optical, electrical, and thermal transport applications.

Toward Computation-Guided Design of Tunable Organic-Inorganic CdS Quantum Dot Binary Superlattices

Combining the advantages of structural programmability in sequence-defined biomimetic molecules and the controllable packing geometry in nanoparticle superlattices, we demonstrate a self-assembled organic-inorganic superlattice whose structure can be altered with the slightest change in the sequence of the organic counterpart. Here, oleate-coated CdS quantum dots (QDs) form a square-packed superlattice with a 1:1 molar equivalence of a diblock amphiphilic peptoid (Nbrpe6Dig) in chloroform. In contrast, no apparent structure is observed in the organic solvent alone. Based on theoretical evidence, we show that the assembly is a binary superlattice where both the CdS QDs and the peptoids serve as building blocks and further predict a correlation between the superlattice structure and the peptoid sequence. The computationally guided prediction is validated by experiments where superlattice transformation is observed with modified peptoids. The mechanism identified in our work inspires new ways to control and tune organic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterial self-assembly.
