Atomic reconstruction for realizing stable solar-driven reversible hydrogen storage of magnesium hydride

Reversible solid-state hydrogen storage of magnesium hydride, traditionally driven by external heating, is constrained by massive energy input and low systematic energy density. Herein, a single phase of Mg2Ni(Cu) alloy is designed via atomic reconstruction to achieve the ideal integration of photothermal and catalytic effects for stable solar-driven hydrogen storage of MgH2. With the intra/inter-band transitions of Mg2Ni(Cu) and its hydrogenated state, over 85% absorption in the entire spectrum is achieved, resulting in the temperature up to 261.8 °C under 2.6 W cm-2. Moreover, the hydrogen storage reaction of Mg2Ni(Cu) is thermodynamically and kinetically favored, and the imbalanced distribution of the light-induced hot electrons within CuNi and Mg2Ni(Cu) facilitates the weakening of Mg-H bonds of MgH2, enhancing the "hydrogen pump" effect of Mg2Ni(Cu)/Mg2Ni(Cu)H4. The reversible generation of Mg2Ni(Cu) upon repeated dehydrogenation process enables the continuous integration of photothermal and catalytic roles stably, ensuring the direct action of localized heat on the catalytic sites without any heat loss, thereby achieving a 6.1 wt.% H2 reversible capacity with 95% retention under 3.5 W cm-2.

Highly loaded bimetallic iron-cobalt catalysts for hydrogen release from ammonia

Ammonia is a storage molecule for hydrogen, which can be released by catalytic decomposition. Inexpensive iron catalysts suffer from a low activity due to a too strong iron-nitrogen binding energy compared to more active metals such as ruthenium. Here, we show that this limitation can be overcome by combining iron with cobalt resulting in a Fe-Co bimetallic catalyst. Theoretical calculations confirm a lower metal-nitrogen binding energy for the bimetallic catalyst resulting in higher activity. Operando spectroscopy reveals that the role of cobalt in the bimetallic catalyst is to suppress the bulk-nitridation of iron and to stabilize this active state. Such catalysts are obtained from Mg(Fe,Co)2O4 spinel pre-catalysts with variable Fe:Co ratios by facile co-precipitation, calcination and reduction. The resulting Fe-Co/MgO catalysts, characterized by an extraordinary high metal loading reaching 74 wt.%, combine the advantages of a ruthenium-like electronic structure with a bulk catalyst-like microstructure typical for base metal catalysts.

Nonredox trivalent nickel catalyzing nucleophilic electrooxidation of organics

A thorough comprehension of the mechanism behind organic electrooxidation is crucial for the development of efficient energy conversion technology. Here, we find that trivalent nickel is capable of oxidizing organics through a nucleophilic attack and electron transfer via a nonredox process. This nonredox trivalent nickel exhibits exceptional kinetic efficiency in oxidizing organics that possess the highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels ranging from -7.4 to -6 eV (vs. Vacuum level) and the dual local softness values of nucleophilic atoms in nucleophilic functional groups, such as hydroxyls (methanol, ethanol, benzyl alcohol), carbonyls (formamide, urea, formaldehyde, glucose, and N-acetyl glucosamine), and aminos (benzylamine), ranging from -0.65 to -0.15. The rapid electrooxidation kinetics can be attributed to the isoenergetic channels created by the nucleophilic attack and the nonredox electron transfer via the unoccupied eg orbitals of trivalent nickel (t2g6eg1). Our findings are valuable in identifying kinetically fast organic electrooxidation on nonredox catalysts for efficient energy conversions.

Synergistic effects of mixing and strain in high entropy spinel oxides for oxygen evolution reaction

Developing stable and efficient electrocatalysts is vital for boosting oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rates in sustainable hydrogen production. High-entropy oxides (HEOs) consist of five or more metal cations, providing opportunities to tune their catalytic properties toward high OER efficiency. This work combines theoretical and experimental studies to scrutinize the OER activity and stability for spinel-type HEOs. Density functional theory confirms that randomly mixed metal sites show thermodynamic stability, with intermediate adsorption energies displaying wider distributions due to mixing-induced equatorial strain in active metal-oxygen bonds. The rapid sol-flame method is employed to synthesize HEO, comprising five 3d-transition metal cations, which exhibits superior OER activity and durability under alkaline conditions, outperforming lower-entropy oxides, even with partial surface oxidations. The study highlights that the enhanced activity of HEO is primarily attributed to the mixing of multiple elements, leading to strain effects near the active site, as well as surface composition and coverage.

Life cycle net energy assessment of sustainable H2 production and hydrogenation of chemicals in a coupled photoelectrochemical device

Green hydrogen has been identified as a critical enabler in the global transition to sustainable energy and decarbonized society, but it is still not economically competitive compared to fossil-fuel-based hydrogen. To overcome this limitation, we propose to couple photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting with the hydrogenation of chemicals. Here, we evaluate the potential of co-producing hydrogen and methyl succinic acid (MSA) by coupling the hydrogenation of itaconic acid (IA) inside a PEC water splitting device. A negative net energy balance is predicted to be achieved when the device generates only hydrogen, but energy breakeven can already be achieved when a small ratio (~2%) of the generated hydrogen is used in situ for IA-to-MSA conversion. Moreover, the simulated coupled device produces MSA with much lower cumulative energy demand than conventional hydrogenation. Overall, the coupled hydrogenation concept offers an attractive approach to increase the viability of PEC water splitting while at the same time decarbonizing valuable chemical production.

The effect of magnetic field on the dynamics of gas bubbles in water electrolysis

This study determines the effect of the configuration of the magnetic field on the movement of gas bubbles that evolve from platinum electrodes. Oxygen and hydrogen bubbles respectively evolve from the surface of the anode and cathode and behave differently in the presence of a magnetic field due to their paramagnetic and diamagnetic characteristics. A magnetic field perpendicular to the surface of the horizontal electrode causes the bubbles to revolve. Oxygen and hydrogen bubbles revolve in opposite directions to create a swirling flow and spread the bubbles between the electrodes, which increases conductivity and the effectiveness of electrolysis. For vertical electrodes under the influence of a parallel magnetic field, a horizontal Lorentz force effectively detaches the bubbles and increases the conductivity and the effectiveness of electrolysis. However, if the layout of the electrodes and magnetic field results in upward or downward Lorentz forces that counter the buoyancy force, a sluggish flow in the duct inhibits the movement of the bubbles and decreases the conductivity and the charging performance. The results in this study determine the optimal layout for an electrode and a magnetic field to increase the conductivity and the effectiveness of water electrolysis, which is applicable to various fields including energy conversion, biotechnology, and magnetohydrodynamic thruster used in seawater.

Nanopore-Supported Metal Nanocatalysts for Efficient Hydrogen Generation from Liquid-Phase Chemical Hydrogen Storage Materials

Hydrogen has emerged as an environmentally attractive fuel and a promising energy carrier for future applications to meet the ever-increasing energy challenges. The safe and efficient storage and release of hydrogen remain a bottleneck for realizing the upcoming hydrogen economy. Hydrogen storage based on liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage materials is one of the most promising hydrogen storage techniques, which offers considerable potential for large-scale practical applications for its excellent safety, great convenience, and high efficiency. Recently, nanopore-supported metal nanocatalysts have stood out remarkably in boosting the field of liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage. Herein, the latest research progress in catalytic hydrogen production is summarized, from liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage materials, such as formic acid, ammonia borane, hydrous hydrazine, and sodium borohydride, by using metal nanocatalysts confined within diverse nanoporous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks, porous carbons, zeolites, mesoporous silica, and porous organic polymers. The state-of-the-art synthetic strategies and advanced characterizations for these nanocatalysts, as well as their catalytic performances in hydrogen generation, are presented. The limitation of each hydrogen storage system and future challenges and opportunities on this subject are also discussed. References in related fields are provided, and more developments and applications to achieve hydrogen energy will be inspired.

Identifying the nature of the active sites in methanol synthesis over Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts

The heterogeneously catalysed reaction of hydrogen with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide (syngas) to methanol is nearly 100 years old, and the standard methanol catalyst Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 has been applied for more than 50 years. Still, the nature of the Zn species on the metallic Cu0 particles (interface sites) is heavily debated. Here, we show that these Zn species are not metallic, but have a positively charged nature under industrial methanol synthesis conditions. Our kinetic results are based on a self-built high-pressure pulse unit, which allows us to inject selective reversible poisons into the syngas feed passing through a fixed-bed reactor containing an industrial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst under high-pressure conditions. This method allows us to perform surface-sensitive operando investigations as a function of the reaction conditions, demonstrating that the rate of methanol formation is only decreased in CO2-containing syngas mixtures when pulsing NH3 or methylamines as basic probe molecules.

Photocatalytic degradation of oily waste and phenol from a local South Africa oil refinery wastewater using response methodology

The photocatalytic degradation of a local South Africa oil refinery wastewater was conducted under UV radiation using an aqueous catalyst of titanium dioxide (TiO2), Degussa P25 (80% anatase, 20% rutile) in suspension. The experiment was carried out in a batch aerated photocatalytic reactor based on a central composite design (CCD) and analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of three operational variables viz. TiO2 dosage (2-8 g/L), runtime (30-90 minutes), and airflow rate (0.768-1.48 L/min) were examined for the removal of phenol and soap oil and grease (SOG). The data derived from the CCD, and the successive analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed the TiO2 dosage to be the most influential factor, while the other factors were also significant (P < 0.0001). Also, the ANOVA test revealed the second-order of TiO2 dosage and runtime as the main interaction factors on the removal efficiency. To maximize the pollutant removal, the optimum conditions were found at runtime of 90 minutes, TiO2 dosage of 8 g/L, and an aeration flow rate of 1.225 L/min. Under the conditions stated, the percentage removal of phenol (300 ± 7) and SOG (4000 ± 23) were 76% and 88% respectively. At 95% confidence level, the predicted models developed results were in reasonable agreement with that of the experimental data, which confirms the adaptability of the models. The first-order kinetic constants were estimated as 0.136 min-1 and 0.083 min-1 for SOG and phenol respectively.

Designing Metal-Free Frustrated Lewis Pairs Catalyst for the Efficient Dehydrogenation of Ammonia Borane

Ammonia borane (AB) has been in the spotlight for the chemical storage of hydrogen over the past decade. However, the development of methods for efficient and controlled hydrogen release from AB under mild conditions is still underway. Herein, using density functional theory (DFT) computations, we designed a metal-free frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) catalyst o-(BPh₂ )C₆ H₄ (NiPr₂ ) (M1) that can efficiently dehydrogenate AB to release more than two equivalents of H₂ under mild conditions. Catalyst M1 can dehydrogenate not only AB to H₂ N=BH₂ (AOB) and H₂ , but also oligomers of AOB with rather low free-energy barriers. The high dehydrogenation activity of M1 is the key of new oligomerization routes to the efficient dehydrogenation of AB to borazine (BZ) or H₂ B-(NH=BH)_n -NH₂ (PIB) and finally to polyborazylene (PBZ) so that more than two equivalents of H₂ can be released. A first-principle kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) study reveals that the activity of our catalytic system can be tuned by varying the initial concentration of M1 and AB. This work can guide the design of catalyst for the highly efficient utilization of AB as a hydrogen storage material.

Lithium Hydrazinidoborane Ammoniate LiN₂H₃BH₃·0.25NH₃, a Derivative of Hydrazine Borane

Boron- and nitrogen-based materials have shown to be attractive for solid-state chemical hydrogen storage owing to gravimetric hydrogen densities higher than 10 wt% H. Herein, we report a new derivative of hydrazine borane N₂H₄BH₃, namely lithium hydrazinidoborane ammoniate LiN₂H₃BH₃·0.25NH₃. It is easily obtained in ambient conditions by ball-milling N₂H₄BH₃ and lithium amide LiNH₂ taken in equimolar amounts. Both compounds react without loss of any H atoms. The molecular and crystallographic structures of our new compound have been confirmed by NMR/FTIR spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. The complexation of the entity LiN₂H₃BH₃ by some NH₃ has been also established by thermogravimetric and calorimetric analyses. In our conditions, LiN₂H₃BH₃·0.25NH₃ has been shown to be able to release H₂ at temperatures lower than the parent N₂H₄BH₃ or the counterpart LiN₂H₃BH₃. It also liberates non-negligible amounts of NH₃ at temperatures lower than 100 °C. This is actually quite detrimental for chemical H storage, but alternatively LiN₂H₃BH₃·0.25NH₃ might be seen as a potential NH₃ carrier.

Nitrogen-Based Fuels: A Power-to-Fuel-to-Power Analysis

What are the fuels of the future? Seven representative carbon- and nitrogen-based fuels are evaluated on an energy basis in a power-to-fuel-to-power analysis as possible future chemical hydrogen-storage media. It is intriguing to consider that a nitrogen economy, where hydrogen obtained from water splitting is chemically stored on abundant nitrogen in the form of a nontoxic and safe nitrogen-based alternative fuel, is energetically feasible.
