A five-year retrospective study on ascarid infections in dogs in southern Italy

INTRODUCTION

A 5-year retrospective analysis of ascarid infections (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina) in dogs from southern Italy was performed to update the epidemiological scenario of these parasites and to identify the risk factors which may favour these infections in animals in this study area. A total of 8,149 dogs, referred to our labs for copromicroscopic analysis using the FLOTAC technique, was considered. A sub-sample of 500 faecal samples were analysed also with the Mini-FLOTAC technique. Of the overall dog samples analysed, 9,2 % (95 % CI = 8,6-9,8) resulted positive for T. canis while 0,5 % (95 % CI = 0,4-0,7) resulted positive for T. leonina. Co-infections with T. canis and T. leonina were found in 0,1 % of dogs (95 % CI = 0,0-0,1). The results obtained by the FLOTAC and Mini-FLOTAC examinations showed a nearly perfect k agreement (k = 0,99, P < 0,001) between these two techniques. Chi-square test showed positivity to T. canis and T. leonina significantly (P < 0,001) associated with dogs housed outdoor (i.e., that lived in garden or in kennel). Moreover, the positivity for T. canis was significantly associated (P < 0,001) also with age (i.e., puppies), as shown by the logistic regression. The decreasing overall prevalence both for T. canis and T. leonina during the years of monitoring, showed that, as suggested by the European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites, the regular diagnosis could contribute to an efficient control of these parasites.

[Control of gastrointestinal helminths in goats in a mixed grazing system with cattle]

INTRODUCTION

Due to the widespread resistance of small ruminant gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) against anthelmintic drugs the established control strategies need to get adapted, aiming to reduce their high dependence from chemical drugs. Host-specific development of GIN can be used as a tool when grazing different species on the same pastures. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of mixed grazing with cattle on the development of GIN infections in goats. Goat flocks with 3 heifers (Group Mix; Visp: n = 12, Chur: n = 15) and without heifers (Group Solo; Visp: n = 7, Chur: n = 15) were grazed separately on pastures at altitudes of 910 m (location Chur) and 1240 m (location Visp) above sea level resp. during one grazing season each. The composition of the mixed groups aimed to achieve a similar intake of roughage of both species. The stocking rate and the availability of roughage in the solo groups was balanced proportionately according to the situation in the mixed groups. The individual GIN egg excretion, the composition of the GIN larvae in the faeces, the FAMACHA©-Score and the pasture contamination with infective GIN larvae was determined in monthly intervals. Self, other and individuation: resolving narcissism through the lunar and solar paths of the Rosarium

This paper describes narcissism as our natural, infant-like behaviour, and specifies three characteristics relating to the evacuation and avoidance of distress, to control, and to distancing from relationship. It suggests that the processes of incarnation and individuation represent the development of the early ego and the 'resolution' of these narcissistic ways of being, including escape from the 'mirror trap'. The development of the early, controlling 'homunculus-ego' entails the loosening and broadening of ego-identifications and the ego becoming subject to the Self. This is an embodied-relational-social-spiritual process outlined in detail by the full 20 woodcuts of the Rosarium Philosophorum, and specifically the lunar (relational) and solar (self-expressive) paths, which are explored herein. These processes are illustrated with respect to the interaction between infant and caregiver, clinical vignettes and examples from the political sphere.

[Retrospective study on the eradication of Swine Dysentery (Brachyspira hyodysenteriae) in Switzerland]

INTRODUCTION

The eradication of Swine Dysentery (infection with Brachyspira hyodysenteriae) within farm populations is extremely complex and its success is significantly linked to the compliance of pig farmers performing the onsite eradications, emphasizing the importance of their motivation. The present study focuses on the motivation and satisfaction of Swiss pig farmers concerning eradication of Swine Dysentery on their farms and has the intention of generating data to establish a basis for decision-making regarding future eradications. A structured survey was conducted on 68 Swiss pig farms where an eradication of Swine Dysentery had already taken place. The data collected were then statistically analyzed. Of the study's population, 50 (73.5%) farms underwent eradication using the total depopulation method and 18 (26.5%) farms conducted an eradication process using the partial depopulation method; both in accordance to the guidelines of Switzerland's Pig Health Service (SUISAG Schweinegesundheitsdienst; SGD). When asked about the driving factors behind their decision to perform the eradications, owners cited their own interest (57.4%; 39/68) (primarily due to financial aspects (38.5%; 15/39)) or external pressure (42.7%; 29/68) (predominantly through marketers as well as through the health status assigned by the SGD (each 11/29)). The duration of the eradication on farms differed significantly and costs varied considerably within the different production types as well as the type of eradication performed. Utilized means and processes for eradication were the same (drugs, disinfectant for manure) or much alike (e.g. emptying of the pigpens) however stock-specific and individual variations were exhibited. The majority of the interviewed livestock owners were motivated to perform the eradication (86.6%; 58/67), satisfied with having performed the eradication and satisfied with the outcome of the eradication (89.7%; 61/68). The cost efficiency of the farms (54.4%; 37/68) and the health status of the herds (63.2%; 43/68) were perceived as having improved and the usage of drugs having diminished (59.7%; 40/67) post eradication. The effort of an eradication was described as acceptable to too great. The study showed herd eradication of Swine Dysentery to be perceived as mainly positive. However, effort as well as costs are felt to be considerable and could, therefore, provide the most important starting point to increasing the willingness of pig owners to perform eradications.
