Highly selective and antifouling reverse osmosis membrane by crosslinkers induced surface modification

Post treatment is a very competent and scalable approach to develop the higher water-flux and salt-rejection membrane since it does not require any change in existing manufacturing process. The virgin Thin Film Composite Reverse Osmosis (TFC-RO) membrane was exposed to various concentrations of Poly (ethylene Glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) after activation with sodium hypochlorite for 1 h. Crosslinkers modified membranes were characterized for degree of wettability by contact angle analyses, surface morphology and surface roughness study by Scanning electron micrographs and Atomic force micrographs, chemical structural modifications by Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy. These treatments resulted in improved membrane performance. 3500 mg/l PEGDA-treated membrane permeate flux increased by 48.7% and salt-rejection by 3.43%. 2000 mg/l EGDMA treated membrane demonstrated 46.13% increase in water-flux and 3.08% increase in salt-rejection as compared with virgin membrane. Organic fouling study indicated that fouling in PEGDA-treated membrane was significantly lower than virgin membrane. Heavy metal ion removal performances for Zinc and Chromium were also higher for modified membranes. Thus, the surface modification by crosslinkers led to increase in selectivity for certain metal ions and better antifouling performance as compared to virgin membrane.

Characterization and Antibacterial Effect of an Experimental Adhesive Containing Different Concentrations of Proanthocyanidin

PURPOSE

To evaluate the degree of conversion (DC%), water sorption (Sp), solubility (Sl), dentin bond strength (μTBS) (immediate and after 12 months of storage), and the antibacterial effect of an experimental adhesive containing different concentrations (%) of proanthocyanidin (PA): 0, 1%, 2%, 4.5%, and 6% (PA0, PA1%, PA2%, PA4.5% and PA6%, respectively).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

DC% was measured by FT-IR and the Sp and Sl were determined based on the ISO 4049 specification. For μTBS, resin composite buildups were constructed incrementally and specimens (n = 8) were sectioned to obtain sticks (1 mm2). The μTBS was evaluated after 24 h and 12 months of water storage at 37°C. The failure mode was analyzed. The antibacterial effects were evaluated by analyzing the bacterial growth (S. mutans) (n = 5) and antibiofilm activity (n = 5) of the adhesives by spectrophotometry.

RESULTS

The incorporation of PA did not affect the Sp, Sl, or DC%. Immediate μTBS was similar for all groups. After 12 months, PA4.5% presented significantly higher μTBS than PA0, while the other groups did not differ from PA0 and PA4.5%. Groups PA0 and PA1% underwent significant reduction in μTBS. In the experimental groups PA2%, PA4.5% and PA6%, μTBS was maintained after storage. All groups showed antibacterial activity.

CONCLUSION

Incorporation of 2%, 4.5%, and 6% PA maintained the dentin μTBS after 12-month storage, without affecting the Sp, Sl, or DC% of experimental adhesives. PA4.5% presented higher μTBS values than PA0 after 12 months. The adhesive presented antibacterial effect irrespective of PA concentration.

The effect of the carbodiimide cross-linker on the structural and biocompatibility properties of collagen-chondroitin sulfate electrospun mat

BACKGROUND

Collagen and chondroitin sulfate (CS) are an essential component of the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) of most tissues. They provide the mechanical stability to cone the compressive forces in ECM. In tissue engineering, electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds prepared by electrospinning technique have emerged as a suitable candidate to imitate natural ECM functions. Cross-linking with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl-aminopropyl)-1-carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxy succinimide can overcome the weak mechanical integrity of the engineered scaffolds in addition to the increased degradation stability under physiological conditions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study has synthesized nanofibrous collagen-CS scaffolds by using the electrospinning method.

RESULTS

The results have shown that incorporation of CS in higher concentration, along with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl-aminopropyl)-1-carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxy succinimide, enhanced mechanical stability. Scaffolds showed more resistance to collagenase digestion. Fabricated scaffolds showed biocompatibility in corneal epithelial cell attachment.

CONCLUSION

These results demonstrate that cross-linked electrospun CO-CS mats exhibited a uniform nanofibrous and porous structure, especially for lower concentration of the cross-linker and may be utilized as an alternative effective substrate in tissue engineering.

Graphene Nanogrids FET Immunosensor: Signal to Noise Ratio Enhancement

Recently, a reproducible and scalable chemical method for fabrication of smooth graphene nanogrids has been reported which addresses the challenges of graphene nanoribbons (GNR). These nanogrids have been found to be capable of attomolar detection of biomolecules in field effect transistor (FET) mode. However, for detection of sub-femtomolar concentrations of target molecule in complex mixtures with reasonable accuracy, it is not sufficient to only explore the steady state sensitivities, but is also necessary to investigate the flicker noise which dominates at frequencies below 100 kHz. This low frequency noise is dependent on the exposure time of the graphene layer in the buffer solution and concentration of charged impurities at the surface. In this paper, the functionalization strategy of graphene nanogrids has been optimized with respect to concentration and incubation time of the cross linker for an enhancement in signal to noise ratio (SNR). It has been interestingly observed that as the sensitivity and noise power change at different rates with the functionalization parameters, SNR does not vary monotonically but is maximum corresponding to a particular parameter. The optimized parameter has improved the SNR by 50% which has enabled a detection of 0.05 fM Hep-B virus molecules with a sensitivity of around 30% and a standard deviation within 3%. Further, the SNR enhancement has resulted in improvement of quantification accuracy by five times and selectivity by two orders of magnitude.
